Leron Black to pursue professional career

That said, this still feels odd to me. How common is it for a player to leave early for a pro career outside of the NBA?

It's quite common.

There are only 60 NBA draft picks every year. A good number of those go to seniors and foreign players. Only the 30 first round picks get guaranteed contracts and it's not uncommon for 2nd round picks to never see an NBA court.

Still, 137 underclassmen left school early last year. Given those numbers, many of them had to know that they were unlikely to be going to the NBA.

If his goal is the NBA, then this is the correct move. He's not going to the NBA straight off of another year at Illinois, and he knows that. His best way to get to the NBA is a few years development in foreign leagues and then trying to land in the NBA from there, ala Brandon Paul.

The filling out of rosters in the NBA is making a shift to players with foreign league experience. Anthony Parker from Bradley was one of the first ones a few years back to come back to the States after playing overseas.

Don't think the NBA is remotely in LB's future, but should have a solid career overseas though.

Hate to lose him, but he probably thinks he needs to make as money as he can while he's young & healthy. Good luck Leron.

Can you prove that they all left to go play pro basketball overseas? That number seems astronomically high.

I didn’t say they all left to play overseas. I said that given how few NBA slots were available, some of them had to know that their future wasn’t in the NBA.
