Lonnie Perrin passes away

I remember that play as well. In retrospect, Blackman was a good coach who could never quite get over the hump. Given today's schedule he would have gone bowling every year. Cecil Coleman was a moron, 10X worse than Mike Thomas ever was
Particularly ridiculous when Michigan was 41-1 and Ohio State 38-4 (if I did my math correctly) against the rest of the conference during that stretch. (Only MSU and Purdue had wins against the Big 2.) And 2 of Ohio State's losses came in Blackman's first year, when he was still implementing his system. In years 2-6, the Big 2 were virtually unbeatable, with Michigan 34-1 and Ohio State 33-2 against the Little 8.

I don't recall that particular play (on radio or TV), but George was my first-ever favorite football player for the Illini. (BTW, GU also dated an Illini cheerleader from my Illinois hometown.)

Blackman: Hard to believe we fired an Illini football coach with a winning Big Ten conference record, while both Woody and Bo were in the league.

RIP Lonnie.
Coach Blackman really doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. With today’s schedules he could have had a 62% winning percentage. Here are his year by year record s and non con opponents.
1971. 5-6. N. Carolina L. USC L. Washington. L
1972. 3-8. USC L. Washington L. Penn St. L
1973. 5-6. Cal. L. W. Virginia L. Stanford L
1974. 6-4-1. Stanford W. Wash. St. W. Cal L
1975. 5-6. Missouri L. Tex A&M L. Wash. St. W
1976. 5-6. Missouri W. Baylor L. Tex A&M L

Coleman was under fire too and probably got rid of Blackman to save his own job.

Re Mike Thomas: Not possible. While he blew the Moeller hire, he did hire Lou Henson.

A funny story about the Bob Blackman time.

In 1973 we started 4 - 0 in conference.

We played OSU at the home and we were all screaming "Rose Bowl, ROSE BOWL!" before we kicked-off.

The OSU player ran the kick back for a touchdown.

You never heard the noise level in Memorial Stadium drop so fast.

The touchdown got called back because of OSU holding.

We lost the game anyway. The score was 30 - 0.

Agree that Coleman may have seen Coach Blackman as a threat. Tate had been talking up Blackman as AD at one point.

I was at this game, too. I remember it all too well...
