With the way that JW has addressed the multiple questions surrounding the issue: there is a head coach lined up, and it's just up to UIUC to make it official.

Good lord I love coaching searches. I guess I'm a sadist.

@DavidHaugh
Early in process and situation fluid but 2 NFL sources in past hour texted to say they've heard Lovie Smith will be candidate at Illinois.

@RyanBakerMedia
Some credible sources are telling me Lovie Smith will be the next #Illini head football coach. @cbschicago

Where there's smoke....

Indeed, the search ended before Whitman fired Cubit. I'm waiting for the leak that tells who is the new coach before the official announcement.

it seems crazy to me that Lovie would be interested but maybe all this losing has caused me to forget that we could be a big time program

Not only that, but the coach will be a massive step up in terms of name recognition and prestige. It wouldn't make sense to make this move if it was only slightly better than lateral.

Someone who was at the epicenter of the Chicago football media's attention for eight years and took a certain NFL team to it's second Super Bowl would fit that description ...

Saw this too. He may not be the best hire, but I think him being hired would create some fan interest again and make the Illinois program look respectable to outsiders.

It would create a buzz. The good kind!!

Whoa! If the Lovie rumor is true, consider me astounded and cautiously very optimistic. I jokingly mentioned this in the other thread, but does anyone think Frazier might consider coming on as DC/AHC?
