By point differential, this is one of the worst NCAA losses we've ever had. Since 1980, worst losses:

1993-94. L Vanderbilt (85-68). Down by 11 at halftime.
1996-97. L Chattanooga (75-63). Lead by 1 at halftime.
1999-00. L Florida (93-76). Down by 6 at halftime.
2002-03. L Notre Dame (68-60). Down by 13 at halftime.
2010-11. L Kansas (73-59). Down by 4 at halftime.
2020-21. L Loyola (71-58). Down 9 at halftime.

Vandy, Notre Dame, Florida, Loyola were the games we really never were in at any point of the game.
But we weren’t a 1 seed playing an 8 in any of those games- this is by far the “worst performance” we’ve had in the tournament - Austin Peay is what comes to mind but that was a bit of a fluke by one point against a team playing out of their mind- this was just a methodical beat down

I didn't comment often this season, but when I did I consistently noted that Underwood does not have the ability to make adjustments when needed. I also stated that if he couldn't take THIS team to a Final Four with THIS talent, then he never will take the Illini to a Final Four. He may be a decent recruiter, but I have never felt he is a good in-game coach. I stand by those statements. BU will be gone before Illinois makes its next Final Four. But a lot of teams don't make it to a FF and I still love what this team did this year. But it could have and SHOULD HAVE ended better.

Krutwig had 9 baskets, KC's defense was not strong
Certainly not laying the loss on KC
Krutwig had more baskets than DMW, TF, AC, JGs and GB combined.
Kofi wasn’t put in a position to succeed on defense.

On the action they ran (over and over) their guard would come off of a curl screen with a clear path to the basket. This left Kofi on an island having to decide to a. Cover the driving guard or b. Stick on Krutwig.

I didn’t hear Deon, but from what I understand he said Kofi adjusted on D to stick to Krutwig. Which means we gave up layups.

If we have learned one thing from Brad it's that he is not stubborn and will adjust. Give him an opportunity to show us how he responds to this

I hat e saying it but I see it the same way. This is the best team BU could of hoped for to build us back. He did not do it, time will tell but this could sting for a number of years. What more could we have asked for? We were out everythinged. We will see another Ayo at Illinois (Miller and Curbello could be that now), we may never see another Kofi, and we wasted him :(
We wasted Kofi?? Is he for sure not coming back I hadn't heard that. Was Kofi wasted in our conference play? I myself don't think so, maybe he is built more for our conference. Big, tough, does he transition well out of our conference? Maybe not,I personally think he had a Large part to get us where we got and truly believe he was not wasted. My biggest disappointment with the loss today,, I thought we had a deeper team than we might ever have. We did have some poor losses early but this team really seemed to be geling at the right time to me. I will say if we had Kofi in the Natinal championship against North Carolina we would have a National Championship banner hanging in State Farm arena,,,sigh

I'm still in shock. Looking at the box score +/- both Trent and Ayo had their worst games of the year, by a wide margin. In our previous losses, a +/- at the level of Trent and Ayo in this game was only exceeded by Adam Miller in the Baylor game and Curbelo in the Ohio State game. If you remember those games, Adam and Andre played like freshman. However, these were 2 vets, in the biggest game of the career. Still in shock.

Yup, worst case scenario. Silver lining is that Ace and Belo know the feeling now and are going to be our leaders in getting us back to this point. Keep in mind that nobody on our team played in a win or go home game like this one

I didn’t see BU turning the ball over, missing open shots, or playing lazy defense.

Also note the BPM of Marquise Kennedy -- that is the classic in-state player snubbed by the big university stat line.

Monty and Trent are great Illini but we got exposed for not being a good shooting team. We desperately need shooters. We will have better shooters next year. We will be more athletic and longer. We will make the another step next year. So happy for a great season. But we arent there...yet.

Sorry this is not it. We didn't even have many clear open shots today. I refuse to believe we don't have good shooters. We do.

We got stifled plain and simple. Compare the wide open looks Loyola got from three vs ours.

agreed with this point. We will be more athletic and longer next year, and the shooting will also be much better. Kofi comes back and we add nimari and we could be as good as we were this year. Hutch coming back will be big.

That's a valid point but would Kofi and Ayo have stayed afterwards, especially if we had made a run?

We had talent but were inexperienced on a stage like this, and it showed. You can cite the BTT run yes, but that just isn't the same as a do or die winner-take-all game that the Madness is in my book.
The B1G is getting exposed as the type of game the conference plays and now the game is officiated need to change. Smash mouth does not work. BU will get the right players and we are heading in the right direction.

Our best shooter is injured. Yes, I agree that our shooters did not get good looks. We are streaky shooters. Our passing needs to improve

I tend to agree. I think big ten coaches run NBA style offenses with a ton of pick and roll and one on one.

Teams like Loyola have heavy motion with back cuts and other styles of cutting that are very difficult to guard on a short turnaround.

Haven't read every page but any reason why didn't Giorgi play more? Felt like he could've guarded the pick and roll better and been out on Krutwig more when he was at the top of the key. Giorgi was key to stopping Liddell when KC couldn't guard him.

Hey guys, sorry to see the game end with the result it did today. I was looking forward to playing you again in the Final 4 (I'm a Baylor fan, for those who understandably don't remember me from back in December).

Just wanted to hop on and congratulate you on a really outstanding season. Even if it ended in a way that takes a little bit of the shine off of the journey, you got to hang a banner - which lasts forever - and you put the nation on notice that Illinois basketball is a force to be reckoned with again.

Last thing, I read most of the game thread and postgame commiseration thread here and I want to note for the record that your fanbase is a class act. The way you all have handled this and the great perspective you've had in the face of extreme disappointment is admirable. I can only hope our fans would be so gracious in defeat (although I'd be willing to wait until next year to find out).

Cheers, and I hope to see you all down the road!

Well that settles it, I'm a Baylor fan for the rest of this God forsaken tournament.

Mitch you must have missed my comments about fighting nuns...but we are a decent lot. Good luck and nice job whipping the Badgers!

They were fighting back the whole game and Giorgi is not the guy you want on the floor when clawing back.

As of this writing with 3 teams in to S16 thus far, 75 programs have made it to the S16 since the last time Illinois did. Up to 10 more teams could be added to that total by EOD tomorrow.

Absolutely unreal to me that this program can go 15 years without making the 2nd weekend even once.

For our offense, they doubled us up where the ball went and we didn't respond. The best way to defeat that is find open guys on weak side...that opening was available often....and coaches didn't recognize it nor our players.

I chalk this loss up to inferior BB IQ on floor and on bench, as much as I hate to admit it.
