Curbelo was terrible down the stretch and Illini lost by 1. I get a kick out of those that say BU should have pulled him for the last 2, 3 or whatever minutes. If he had and Illini lose by 1, same people would have been screaming how do you not have your top PG playing last 2 or more minutes of game. Believe me I don’t think there are many on here that are more infuriated by Curbelo’s turnovers and lackadaisical play than I am — and not just this game — but you have to have your PG in that late in a close game. It is on him to not have that kind of performance and play better. Hopefully Andre learns from all this. Now it is on the staff to make sure he does.

The best feature to a great PG is to make others around you better. Belo has not learned this nor he needs to pass the ball to players who is in the best position to score. BU will work them hard this week to get ready for Cincy!!!

He hit his head early after being in concussion protocols last week and clearly wasn’t right, yet stayed in the game.

that’s on BU…
It also looked like he got smacked in the face late in the game. We have no other PG, unfortunately.

I believe once Hutch and Kofi get on the floor we will be better equipped. We need another ball handler and Hutch will be that guy. I cannot imagine he will be out much longer. I expect him to play Monday.

BU is going to use this game as bludgeoned lever for the team...and to everyone on this board....Ayo is in the league now.....comparing him to this team will be tedious going forward...and no help to anyone. Not directed to you.
Not trying to get personal here, but this feels like a straw man. No one is comparing Belo to Ayo like “Ayo was so much better at…”. The comments are about Belo trying to be something he’s clearly not - a “give me the ball and let me do my thing closer”. Ayo… Kobe… hell, Jason Preston on Ohio … take your pick - that’s who he was so miserably failing to be tonight.

Curbelo's not going to change. His personality demands he must be the center of attention when he's in the game and that has to change.
Kofi will eliminate a lot of his dumb attempts as he will dish it off to himi instead of going it alone to the basket, like he did tonight. He dribbles way too much, forcing his dribble through tight spaces and tonight that was a killer.

His head is way too big and filled with too much preseason hype. He needs to shut up with the yapping to the refs, play within his abilities, and do his job.

Agree, you needed him in the game in the final stretch. But Underwood allowed him to continually drive every time into the lane with nowhere to go with the ball forcing him to shoot a bad shot or throw it away. Several plays in a row. Why not set up a play to free up Trent or flash Hawkins to the basket? Something, anything. All we need was one bucket and we had none in the last 3 minutes. Frustrating and somewhat inexplicable.

Maybe BU tried setting something up and it wasn't run properly, not sure. I'm still a huge Curbelo fan and hope he learns from the experience. He has the potential to be one of our best, and I hope he realizes it.

Anyone else want to vent re Curbelo tonight.
Good gracious…we all saw it.
Now have an actual take that requires thought and not emotion.
On a side note, it wasn’t a kick…..read the rule. I order to call a kick it must be intentional.
Trent spun when he dribbled and it inadvertently was run through by the defender.
That kick sure looked intentional to me.
And he clearly fouled Trent right before the kick.

Sorry...posters have been injecting Ayo into many comments all night and we need to let that go. I was a fan also but he's gone.

You know, this board is a place where we all come to voice opinions and discuss our love for the Fighting Illini programs......there has been a lot of blame being posted about who lost this game or what we should have done differently ......And i respect every one of the posts being posted in this thread....

But I am so m'f***ing mad that we lost playing not to lose......Never thought I would see a BU coached team play like a Weber team used to play....

No offensive flow for the last 5-6 minutes of the game ....I love BU and am glad he is our coach but we needed that first year BU getting up in players faces and screaming redfaced bloody murder at them ....they needed to be more afraid of BU than MU......

And lets be perfectly honest here .....Bo Boroski and Larry S. are THE 2 worst refs I have seen in almost 60 years of watching college BB....DJ bald head ref is a close third but Bo and Larry SUCK , and thats putting it mildly.....

Anyways , we lost ......to a crappy MU team......on the road......by 1 point after being ahead by 12 at 58-46 with 5 :30 left to play......

We can dissect it , replay it and diagram all the crappy play but as I sit here stunned by the result we can't change anything....

I still think Trent got fouled at halfcourt....I still think the MU guard kicked the ball.........and i still think we should have called a timeout to set up a play.......wow, actually set up a play ...fancy that .......

belo needs to watch this game numerous times this week and give a report to the coaching staff on what HE saw.......accountability is needed and some toning down of the driving into the paint plays..that works good when giorgi was sealing off one side of the paint but Payne ain't giorgi.....

I think I will stop and do a 420 and have a stiff gin and soda and watch a movie or three.....

later everyone..............

After cooling off I have to remind my self of an age old quote about excuses being like something

Curbelo absolutely stunk tonight. But like, he was amazing last season, so he can and probably will find that form again. He showed an ability to learn from mistakes last season that's going to have to come to play again after this one.

I think he's been pressing too much and I think he got caught up in the NBA buzz and is trying too hard to prove himself in that regard. Gotta imagine tonight changes that. He's not getting to the NBA playing like he did tonight and he knows that.

I do think this team, right now, is nowhere near the "better than last year" buzz I've been seeing here. We lack pg depth, and without Ayo are thin on players that can make their own offense. I do expect the team to be good. Certainly better than tonight. I'm more skeptical than ever though that we can eclipse last year's team, which was always a tall order to begin with.

Good post. He is not fundamentally sound. With his tendencies it makes it almost impossible to win 7 games in a row come March/April with him being the head of the snake.

Anatomy of a Meltdown

We were up 58-46 with 10:14 left after a CoHawk 3.
In the last 10 minutes:
- we were outscored 21-8
- we made 2 baskets and 3 free throws
- we shot 2-15 from the floor
- we committed 7 turnovers
- AC missed 9(!) shots
- fouls were 11-4 in their favor
- 0 points in the last 3 minutes

This, this right here is exactly why this loss is solely on the coaching staff. As horrible as the officiating was, as horrible as ALL of the players finished, if this staff can not\ will not make adjustments than this season will be a huge disappointment. Ayo or no Ayo, absolutely zero excuses. Kofi or no Kofi, absolutely zero excuses. There was more than enough time to change the outcome of this game on so many levels. Completely embarrassing.
