Maryland 84, Illinois 59 POSTGAME

JCL can't play a lick of defense, thus he needs to be used as an offensive weapon off the bench.

Tate is not a threat on offense, thus he needs to be available to give breathers to TJL and Abrams when needed.

Starters:
TJL
Abrams
Hill
Black
Morgan

That or

Abrams
Hill
DJW
Black
Morgan

The only bright spot in this game was when AJ got in at the end and stripped Melo Trimble. It was a thing of beauty.

There was one possession where the ball was deep in the paint, I think it was off an offensive rebound, or maybe another kind of loose ball, one of our bigs secured it and kicked it out to a wide open Tate sitting on the 3 point line. He didn't even consider shooting. Nobody closed out on him, he swung the ball into the corner without hesitation and DJW took a 3. DJ was open enough, but not like Tate. Jaylon didn't have a defender within a mile of him. He is not a threat to even shoot, let alone score, and teams know it.

So DJW missed, because he's not much of a 3 point shooter, and the terps didn't have much trouble securing the board, because they already had an extra defender in the paint in the form of Tate's "defender"

Bye. I'm as mad about tonight and our lack of progress as anyone, but I'll never bail on the program. Going to hope they somehow salvage this season and, if not, that Whitman can find a great replacement for Groce. But will always bleed orange and blue!! :chief:

Yup.

Self has a better gig than IL so has no reason to laugh.

BAM hasn't been any better at KSU than he was here so has no reason to laugh.

I thought I saw somewhere KSU was something like 13 and 1 with their one loss coming by way of a one point loss to a team I can't remember...oh yeah...Maryland :):):)

I am just rooting for the young guys to learn, and for Malcolm to increase his job opportunities. It's been said far too many times as a way of mitigating the obvious; Groce is a great guy...he is a bad coach.

I am not happy to see him fail, but I do not feel sorry for him. He makes a butt-load of money, and he is doing a poor job. These young men deserve better teaching.

Hope they can turn it around, but I have no faith that the coaching will allow them to succeed.

Couldn't have said it any better

It sure was and since the announcers were already talking about something other than the game they totally missed it. Best defensive play of the game for Illinois.

3.9 mil is nothing to sneeze at for sure. I was alluding to the fact he turned IL into a middle of the pack B1G program and has done the same at KSU.

I would be happy if the Illini were "middle of the pack" by seasons end. The team that lost tonight would not win half of their conference games.

Just a few thoughts:
1.) Just a week ago many people were on cloud nine and discussing our great talent and good coaching and thus after one loss in Big Ten play the ship has sunk? Negative Nancy! Maybe just a leak on the lower deck.

I actually do think that there's decent talent on this team. Talent that, in the hands of competent coaching staff, could be an 11+ win B1G regular season team and easily into the NCAA Tourney, but don't include me in the cloud nine crowd.

Here are some numbers for you (Happy 2016!):

1) 1/7 MSU 79, Illinois 54
2) 1/19 Indiana 103, Illinois 69
3) 2/25 Indiana 74, Illinois 47
4) 3/3 Maryland 81, Illinois 55
5) 3/11 Purdue 89, Illinois 58
6) 11/24 WVU 89, Illinois 57
7) 12/27 Maryland 84, Illinois 59

When is the last time that the Illini have had seven (7!) 25+ points, get blown off the court, losses in one calendar year?

That's 7 in less than 5 months of actual basketball. At that rate, these losses are coming about once every 3 weeks. Are you willing to bet that the Illini won't experience another one of these in the next 3 weeks?

I'll see your Negative Nancy and raise you a Pollyanna.

Go Illini!

Totally unacceptable performance...again. Hard to believe how much poorer the whole is than the sum of its parts.

Second best goes to Lucas with the steal and fast break layup at the other end, our best offensive play of the game.

Weber did not have great record at Illinois, but I don't remember many games that we lost by 25 or more points. He did teach defense.
