Mascot debate

Serious question--why? What does a dancing furry or big head bring to the experience of watching an athletic event?

No.

I've been beaten into a grudging acceptance of the block I. So much so that I'd be over the moon if we just put it properly on the helmet.
Sorry....your avatar clearly explains this is a subject you have nothing to add to./s

Suggested this before and I'll raise it again. HAL 9000 as a #4 type "mascot." Just a red dot and a camera on the scoreboard. The footballl team stops them on 4th and goal, and HAL says, "I'm afraid I can't let you do that."

Does Illinois really need a mascot?
Not really directed at you necessary but everyone that is thinking the same.
Do we need cheerleaders?
Do we need a band?
Do we need PA announcer to tell us it’s a first down?
Do we need Grange Grove?
Do we etc. etc. etc.
Do we need a mascot? Of course not
If 2020 taught us anything is that none of this is necessary if all we care about is watching the game.
These things are the sideshow. They either add to the atmosphere or school spirit or both.
A mascot is just another sideshow that can add to the overall experience and excitement.
If it’s not for you then fine. But if you don’t care then why do you care?
Just to be clear, my kids are grown and I don’t need it either but I understand that it can add something to others game day experience.
All my daughter did during the game is watch the cheerleaders. Every time we got a first down and the crowd cheered my daughter would turn to me and ask “Did we score a touchdown?”

1st of all thanks to Dan for, getting this thread started for me, some very good ideas....digging the Orange Crush thoughts, product tie-in automatic, ties into our cheering stars also. Tulane has the Green Wave why can't we have the Orange Crush! Was thinking today for some more ideas, Snappers as in menacing turtle, Timber Rattlers, and Prairie Wolves. Keep up the ideas and if we can get Moggs out of retirement we might have us a poll.

HAL loses.

Great God, NO. Just stop it. Look, I know I’m old, But are you really going to change the name? Because the PC crowd won’t shut up until you do. “Oskee-wow-wow” is on the hit list, as is the Three-In-One In halftime. Do you think they’ll stop at “Illini”?

Not Iowa
Does Illinois really need a mascot?
Nope. I’m actually beginning to enjoy the actual product on the court, and in due time, the field. When your team totally blows, some fuzzy stupid critter may be needed to help kill the time. Im hoping any desire for that falls over time. I hope.
