After going to New York and, more importantly, Italy lately ... this is how I feel about pizza. I like sausage or veggie or whatever, but if a place is ACTUALLY known as a great pizza joint, I'll just get cheese. That's THE pizza that has for some reason been branded as like "boring" by Americans, which is really lame, lol.
It really is all about the dough/crust, minimal sauce and cheese, and cooked in a wood-fired oven. Will be back there next week. 🇮🇹🍕🍷😝

Yeah, I hate to say this as a Chicagoan ... but the best pizza I have ever had is about ten different places in Italy, a massive dropoff to an AMAZING place in New York City and then a pretty big dropoff back to the Midwest ... and we have excellent pizza here, those pizzas were just so good.

As far as instate pizza, for those who like thin crust ... Agatucci's in Peoria >>>>

Correct, but good sauce is enhancing and crummy sauce is . . . degrading. Same is true of cake/frosting, fries/Mayo, bean soup/cornbread, burgers/cheese, bourbon/cocktails and many other combinations. In all cases if the base component is poor, the combination is too. A pig with lipstick is still a pig (and still good for BBQ).
Fries/mayo? Surely you jest.

Yeah, it’s hard to find bad food in Italy. Even the panini and pastries in the gas stations are only outfriggingstanding!

Vito & Nicks on south Pulaski in Chicago, and/or the cousin Barraco's on 95th in Evergreen Park, or Palermos on 95th in Oak Lawn all have EXCELLENT thin crust tavern style pizza.

So much so, that as an adult, when we moved to southeast DuPage, I bought a large professional styrofoam pizza box to help keep it hot as I drove the 25 minutes back home on 294 N to Wolf/Joliet Road exit.

and dont leave home without $100 cash in your pocket.

Mrs. Illiniguy74 and I have been residents of Georgia for 22 years now. We've learned to appreciate great pork barbeque. We've considered trying Black Dog when we get back to Champaign. How does it stack up?
My daughter loves Black Dog. My wife loves Hickory River.

my folks took me there in the early 1970's.
nothing has changed over the years. They are still serving Old Style from the tap, at least they were 3 years ago
A slice of the pre-Ricketts Wrigleyville, quite literally.

I grew up on Monical's, and even after living in or visiting pizza meccas like NY, Chicago, Miami (lots of Italian ex-pats) and Italy, it's still one of my favorites, particularly for thin/cracker crust pizza.
And totally agree about plain cheese being the best way to enjoy excellent pizza.

Didn't Monical's start out as a little Mom and Pop in Tuscola or Tolono?
