To add to this, Texas A&M dedicates the entire three levels of the East side of Kyle Field to students.

That's 38,000 sideline seats worth of lost revenue at SEC prices. Yet we hand wring about two sections.
Yep! Some places like A&M, Baylor and others straight-up put the students front and center ... and I think that's great. However, having students in the end zone actually isn't a huge problem in and of itself, but they should be as close as humanly possible to the field; the student section is NOT the area to build some really tall wall to prevent obstructed views and then ALSO put several rows of the band plus a tall staircase in between the first row of students and that wall! Two other examples from places that are generally thought to be intimidating and whose setups are similar enough that we should probably imitate them somewhat include Iowa and Oregon below. Neither puts their students in these extremely coveted, big donor seats ... but they both have way better setups than Illinois.

Iowa: Students in the purple sections - part of the end zone but also in two corner sections. This would be a similar setup to my Horseshoe/visitors section idea posted earlier. Additionally, as someone who has been to Kinnick a lot, those first rows are RIGHT on top of the field, and they are elevated as little as possible, as seen in the second photo.

Oregon: Students in the gray sections 4-8. Like Iowa, you put some in the end zone but keep some in sideline sections. And, needless to say, they are right on top of the field.

Illinois: We all know where the students are, but look how comparatively (A) higher up off the ground they are and (B) more "up in the air" and away from the core of the stadium they are.

Hell, that first pic even looks really cool from field level! If you had that exact same setup but with the students beginning where the Marching Illini first row is (that actually is a VERY significant difference in distance from the field!) and ideally closed in the corners, far fewer people would complain. However, the second pic really illustrates why so many feel the students are just too "set apart" from the rest of the stadium. We could have easily chosen to have the NEZ structure wrap around to be closer to the towers and feel more cohesive, but we chose to have it go straight back in a rectangular shape ... that decision just makes the whole area seem so separate from the "noise effort" that the rest of the stadium is creating.

Our large main video board is two years past its lifetime. They don’t even make the parts for it anymore; it’s been held together with duct tape and bandaids as the DIA has prayed it won’t die during a game and will last another season. Anyone notice the black squares in it during our last game? Also, as anyone who has attended a game knows, the Wi-Fi infrastructure is horribly outdated and awful. To update just these two essential parts of the stadium will cost at least $20-30 million plus, money Illinois didn’t have because of the focus on the $21 million payout to athletes. The DIA has been cutting and shuffling around staff, services, and initiatives, including Illini Fan Council which was eliminated. There were even discussions about possibly having to cut non-revenue sports teams. This gift will immediately impact all of those critical areas and has provided relief to a very stressed Illini athletic administration…
Video boards have been in the works since before the Gies announcement. Wifi (not cell) has been updated in the concourse already and is scheduled to be completed for the seating areas by the USC game.

A&M always underperforms, it's not worth much.

I remember multiple big wins (it was 2007) when the team ran over to celebrate with students and were stymied by how far up we were. A handful climbed up and through the band, but not many.

I'm neither defending nor supporting their football team. I have a graduate degree from there and don't follow them anymore. But, having attended many games there, the student section is loud and impressive and very in the game. They've just had butt coaches.

Exponentially worse than some of ours?

Understood. Coaches and players matter. Where fans sit, in reality, big fat whoop.

Monetize your fans, that matters.

It's like I spoke it into existence, great video but the end would have looked better with a right-side-up state outline. I did not alter this image (as I obviously did the one before).

No kidding ,the BIG's are upside down too - even if they didn't want to move the camera/drone to the other side of the stadium, just edit it in post production, it would not have been that hard and nobody would have known the difference!

I'm taking a page from Nightman's book. I played around with the height of the structure, but I think matching the string course / horizontal limestone band is the play. The top floors would be an awesome year-round event space.

I think luxury/semi luxury expansion like you have shown is a phenomenal idea. Every seed dealer/equipment company from Quincy to Paris, IL will buy those. Think that's a great way as well to foster new donor relations.

I especially like the idea if you could also incorporate a beer garden below as Bob Zuppke theorized. I'd love to see something done to get the fans closer to the field in that end zone...whether bleacher wall lowered etc.

Really I'd like to see that end zone area be a party on bottom/business on top.

That would offer a unique experience that can really set aside from other venues

I’d like to see them make the South End seating as high up as possible. To make the stadium a true oval. I think that would make it look really impressive
Is there talk about that? I kinda assumed that it was mainly going to increase the capacity of the seating

I don’t know, but I do know one thing….if we get that in the SEZ there won’t be anymore $100 season tickets in the horseshoe!
