Michigan Game Postponed

It reeks of the "everybody gets a trophy" attitude that all the olds think is the cause of society's purported downfall, but I think an argument could be made to have two (or more, in the event of a tie between the top non-Michigan teams) co-champions this season.

The record books for this season are already full of asterisks, so what's a few more?
Just like you youngsters to want participation trophies!

I initially wanted to see us in the B10 tourney but at this point I'd give that up to see us go to battle w/ Michigan. Would be a massive disappointment to not even get the chance to see how we would do.

We need to make up games @Neb and @MSU. It would be great to squeeze in a few more road games now, instead of trying to pile them all in at the end. We're already capping off our season with two tough road games (@Wisc and @OSU).
As much as anything makes sense these days, it "makes sense" for 2 make up games to be inserted between 2/6 and 2/16. Though that 10 day break before Iowa worked out just fine.

Yeah, MSU on the 11th is the best case scenario for both teams. Nebraska's already booked, and it's not going to get any easier to find those open slots from here on out.

We may end up playing an "NBA schedule" with games every other day.

That article is bizarre. It mentions Wisc, Rut, OSU, and IU as the only games in February, apparently disregarding the Illinois game. But it also says only three games were postponed due to the shutdown (which is actually four (PSU, IU, NU, and MSU) or five if you also include us).
Is scUM ghosting us?

Ok, thanks for clarifying. MSU has no worries about it then I suppose. Of course Michigan is a medical school, so they would probably be more apt to take more precautions.
I heard their quarantine will last to 8th and they dont have enough practice days for scheduled games....not sure if that's a week of practices,.. but sounds like fairly legit rationale to postpone, even though I would love to play them after only 2 days of practice....

Isn’t two days of practice kind of normal to prepare for an opponent? I realize they’ve had a lot of time off- but so have a lot of teams and they still played when it’s over.

I mean is Michigan just going to tell the Big Ten what games they will choose to play and when? I didn’t realize it worked that way

It’s a balancing act but IMO the B10 will look very weak if they choose to let Michigan call the shots on this. Everyone knew this was going to be a challenging year. No one said we will let teams decide when and if they are ready to play. This game should be a forfeit if Michigan refuses play. MSU, PSU, Maryland, Nebraska all had issues and didn’t cancel games strictly for their own benefit.

This is not a homer opinion. I think there is an equal chance they would come out and light things up vs coming out rusty.

I completely agree with you- look at the first half of the Iowa game with both teams coming off layoffs- one of the most offensively efficient half’s of the college season

Layoffs aren’t great but rest is and having two days of practice to prepare for an opponent is typical during a full season- it’s a difficult year for every team and teams will have to play short handed on irregular rest and under difficult circumstances- saying “we need longer to prepare for an opponent” is not a legitimate excuse this season

To pile on, Iowa just played Tuesday and Thursday so they had 1 day of practice to prepare for Ohio State. During a non-Covid year, teams play Thursday and then Sunday or Saturday and then Tuesday all the time which equates to 2 days of practice between games.

To be fair layoffs while practicing is different than no practices for two weeks. Game conditioning will definitely suffer. If the Illini were totally off for 2 weeks I think most here would not want them to play after only 2 days back.

I'm guessing conditioning may be a significant factor...but even in quarantine I would expect they had individual conditioning. I also agree that B10 should not let Mich shape their perfect return schedule after quarantine.
They will canx our game and have plenty of time to prep for wisconsin on 14th and avoid short turn illini wisconsin back to back games... that they were already dreading... and help ease their trip to b10 championship....kinda sucks since I dont see where we make up this game...and I think Mich has unreasonable control to rewrite their schedule.

I would absolutely want them to play.

If a kid sprains his ankle and misses a week or two, they come back ASAP and don't worry about getting more than 2 days of practice.

It is Michigan they get what they want. It will make the BIG look weak, which football showed it is weak, if scUM is allowed to just decided who they want to play?
I do see one positive, Katz just out tOSU ahead of scUM, this is what needs to happen. scUM needs to be seeded down if they only play let’s say 16 games for the whole year.

I think at this point you do one of two things:

1) Cancel the BIG tournament and use that week for make up games. Not likely with a second year of lost TV revenue.
2) End the season 1 week early, seed the teams and take them all to Indy in a bubble allowing for every team quarantine time prior to both the BIG and NCAA tourney and the teams that make the Big Dance can just stay in Indy in the bubble.

Yes scUM would still get the benefit of being the #1 seed for the BIG tourney, but this year I am not sure seeding makes much difference? Illinois, Iowa, tOSU, scUM, Wisconsin, Rutgers for sure could win it, and for that matter Minny, Indy, MSU and even PSU would have a shot at least?
This would allow the PSU or Indy type of team to play their way into the NCAA tournament also.

To be clear, it was to be a 14 day shutdown. Either it is or it isn’t. Today is day 14. That should leave 4 days of practice before our game. Some are now saying it doesn’t end until tomorrow. That still leaves 3 days of practice if they don’t start until Monday. Some are saying they can’t practice until Tuesday. That makes 16 days unless they do math differently in Michigan. The fact that there is nothing official from the University or the B10 is frustrating to say the least and leads people to assume the worst.

It does, but does it surprise you? It is scUM they are above the rest of the league so they can do what they want until the league says no or penalizes them?

Seed the BIG tournament by number of games won rather than won/lost percentage. That might encourage teams to step and play, if at all able.

#150
I suppose this was inevitable. Normally, teams have every incentive to play the games, but with no fans going through the turnstyles, it's a weird year made even weirder.

As much as I'd love to see a legit BIG champ, I suspect the league will have to step in and award it to one of the teams based on somewhat arbitrary criteria. If Michigan is gaming the situation, then Muck Fichigan.
