John Wooden did not like to take timeouts. But he had Lew Alcindor and then later on Bill Walton playing center for him: along with a bunch of other top notch players.

This was the sequence where I said to myself we are not going to win this game. Another missed open 3 from Ben and then KJ without hesitation chucked a contested corner three with 25 on the shot clock rather then passing the ball to a wide open Tomi in the post where Tomi had a mismatched on Fears with a perfect box out for a open layup/dunk. One of many sequences where the team needed to get back to attacking inside out. Frustrating.
I see it differently. This is indeed the sequence that doomed us but for a different reason - it completely gassed us with our shortened rotation. But I don't think it's fair to question the two 3 taken there in hindsight. We were up 1 at that point and they were transition 3s, one of the best kind of 3s to take. If one of those were made, the game could have ended completely differently and we would be having a much happier discussion here. Also with KJ's 3, we had 3 Illini jerseys around the basket ready to rebound. Riley almost got the put back but Tomi was there too and affected his shot. The sequence was just a back breaker and completely fatigued us, spiritually and physically. It took all of MJ to make that block and he was pretty much done after that too.

One thing people tend to forget here in the midst of the the emotion is that college basketball games are extremely volatile in general. Good teams can minimize that volatility but it's still unavoidable. There are actually a lot more chance events in a game than we are willing to admit. Sometimes a play just doesn't go our away and it changes the course of a game entirely.

Since some posters here were called idiots for expressing concern that we struggle to play 40 complete minutes after the late run from Northwestern, the team has been down by as much as 10 to Nebraska, 11 to Ohio State, 17 to Rutgers, allowed UCLA to cut a 16 pt lead to 2 in 4 minutes, and lost a game by 14 in which they had a 16 pt lead.
At this point, it’s clearly a game management issue, and the blame should fall mostly on the coaches.

Maybe it’s because we struggle to inbound the ball sometimes?
Speaking of sidelines inbounds. In the Michigan/Ohio State game today, which was tied at 80. Michigan came out after a timeout at their end of the floor from the sideline' They got the ball inbounds and after a couple of passes and multiple screens their player got the the ball on the wing and drove to the basket for an easy lay-up. I have not seen too much of Michigan, but they look to be pretty good. Their 2 bigs are pretty skilled.

This is what ticks me off the most !!!!!!!!

I want Brad to own this 💩

Admit Tyler and Hamer aren’t getting it done …

Admit he screwed up in recruiting Ben, Tre, Booth …

Admit he didn’t make adjustments !!!!!

Just own it !!!!!!!!
Many online refuse to believe this is true but its blatantly obvious now. Brad flat out missed on his evals of Humrichous, Tre and Booth.

Probably has been said in this thread so my apologies if I am beating the dead horse but Brad needs to re-evaluate his Xs and Os next year. If that means bringing in someone else and allowing a few departures to other staffs so be it.

Something needs to be done. If this team was not as good of a rebounding team as they are we'd have a lot less wins.

Good points. But when you need a bucket, when you're struggling (0-19 counts as struggling), I think it is established thinking that you get a dunk, layup or freethrow. We (our star NBA prospect PG) passed up a chance for our center to score over their undersized point guard, for a three. That was just not at all the right thing to do.

I agree that we have a super talented roster and that’s about it. Not sure why so many on here are shocked and demoralized about where we are now. Almost an entirely new team this year, only a couple of returning players. Who is going the be the floor general? Especially when your best players are freshmen? How long to develop continuity on the floor? You can fairly say that it should fall to the coach in situations like these, but come on, it’s a whole new world out there with the portal and nil. Going to be a learning curve there. Imagine if this occurred 8 years ago, I don’t know about you but I would be thinking ; Wow, we are going to be great next year. I think Brad has been an improvement over the past two coach’s. He has navigated the portal and nil reasonably well and hopefully finds a winning and repeatable formula.
Well, he better get used to dealing with “an entirely new team” because next year may be a repeat, only with with less talent

One play will never change a game. Sure, there will be an identifiable moment that you can point to, but to do that ignores the rest of the game. When someone threw a pass away, bricked an open look, didn't box out and gave up an offensive rebound. Those all count just as much as that one bad bounce that people like to blame for a loss.

And you're talking about emotion here, that's what good coaches do. They manage their teams emotions. They do that by calling timeouts at the right time, by adjusting the strategy, by scheming up a clean look to provide confidence, by talking to the guys in timeouts and on the bench. It's part of the job.

Chance will always play a part, but it is far less than people tend to think.

I get the angst over Ben and Booth, but Tre seems to have been a very good addition, at least when he gets to play.
As long as he doesn't hold onto the ball for any length of time at all. I think Illini0440 or whatever his handle is was both clear and accurate about this: when Tre back-cuts for layups, works for offensive rebounds (and tosses in, maybe, one open but nonetheless verbotten mid-range jumper), he was extremely effective offensively. He was good for 10 points a game that way, and was very, very efficient.

When he squared up, jab-stepped, and then dribbled into traffic for a turnover or contested and likely missed mid-range jumper? Then he wasn't efficient. I imagine Tre and boss Underwood haven't seen eye to eye on that. And so Tre is in long-term bench-confinement. The whole thing is distrubingly juvenile, on both ends.

This is what I have been most afraid of since TU was elevated on the staff.
Yes. TU could be a great coach but the perceived conflict of interest often causes issues. That’s why I’m a bit surprised the administration let it happen.

Tyler was never a starter in college and got tick only because of Daddy Brad........so that means he's earned an AC job in control of our offense......?????????.............sorry , but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me.......seems like BU is deferring to TU at every timeout instead of ripping into the team like he used to do........

I don't want him to go crazy like the first couple of years , but it seems to me that TU is getting much to big for his britches and BU needs to tell him to STFU sometimes.........this idea of nepotism doesn't work at a P 5 school and TU needs to fly out of the nest and experience the world on his own.....

Cut the cord BU before Josh cuts it for you.............this season has not been fun at all and could sink even further into the depths of despair with our remaining schedule......I would imagine the big time donors feel worse about this season than I do.....if that's possible.......

On the banner kerfuffle, snafu, fubar, #U#@ up. Has Josh or anyone said anything on how they managed to screw that up? I really don't see how you could do that without doing it intentionally. Or the person who did it is the most inept person in the history of ineptitude.

Meanwhile, after all the excuses Underwood has made for this team... Constantly bemoaning the injuries and the sickness and not being whole as rationale for why we can't win.. Our schools best coach is over here winning 8 in a row with 5/6 players and season long injuries to some of her best players..

Brad doesn't know why they quit trying to go inside. Call a play! Is there not a play that they could run? Not even one?

The teenage players need some guidance on the court, so have the teenage coaches draw up some plays.

When Josh is hiring the next head coach, if he isn't also cut loose for letting this fiasco happen, he will at least be able to say honestly, "If you are hired I have to inform you now that you can't hire any close or semi-close family members. It can never happen here again."

1. Not playing Tre and limiting DGL's minutes is coaching malpractice. Plain and Simple. Those 2 and MJ will be in the portal. Who could blame them?
2. The upside-down hanging of Shannon's jersey was on purpose. No way you hang that jersey upside-down by accident. A 5th-grader couldn't make that mistake. Someone wanted to make a statement . . . and they did.
3. KJ is not a top 5 pick. Top 50 maybe.
4. Tomi is just soft. Maybe he's sick, idk. But he has no physical presence offensively or defensively.
4. Brad cannot adjust in-game and is depending on his nepotic son to do it. Results are as to be expected.
5. I'm going to miss Morez Johnson more than any of them. He's going to be a star somewhere.
6. Brad's not leaving. No one is going to pay him more than the $4.6 million he makes. Even Matt Painter (a much better X's and O's coach) makes less than Brad.
7. Most here won't like my criticism of Brad. I remember Groce and Weber had their defenders, too. So, I don't care. Eventually, people will see the light. Illinois can do better.

How do you not play Tre White unless he's hurt? Shameful.

(Yes, I'll admit it. I'm upset. This season HAD so much promise.)
I like your criticism of Brad! He deserves the criticism.
