Last thought tonight: I had tremendous respect for Izzo. His teams always play fast. They always defend and rebound and play hard. And he goes deep in March with less talent than the blue bloods.

But he's lost himself. The game his teams play these days is barely recognizable as basketball. And his brazen and shameless tampering of the officiating diminishes his ability as a coach.

I take a little solace in the fact his program has likely peaked and now he's mostly just stalling any progress MSU could be making in this critical new era of college basketball.
He lost himself years ago. Do you all forget when he threw that bumb in that had zero minutes all year just to break Ayo's nose?

They were more physical yet it was us getting loose ball rebound fouls time and time again

There was one late where two of our guys got pushed in the back and the foul was on us lol
The fouls and FTs were about even though.

IL was 20-24
MSU was 20-23

IL shot 12 more threes.

I don’t see officiating factoring in here. It was about as even as it gets from the stats.

IL- 21 fouls
MSU- 19 fouls

4th straight loss to MSU. Unfortunately MSU had their backs to the wall and played with desperation. They outrebounded us and Fears knows how to bait calls. Wagler was due for a game like this. Will see how they respond next week and against Michigan at home. My guess would be they drop one on the west coast road swing. Bottom line is to secure a top 3 seed in the tournament and advance to at least Sweet 16 or Elite8/ Final 4 type run. At this point Underwood has proven enough in the regular seasons with BTT titles and a regular season title. It's all about what his teams can accomplish in March.

No one else is mentioning it so I will. Tomi is taking Wagler out of the game. EVERY TIME he comes out for a pick and roll to aid Wagler, he picks and sticks! Doesn't roll doesn't move to get open. HE CLOGS. This allows his defender to double team Wagler closing off KW shot attempts and drives. Third game now he is screwing up Wagler's game. He doesn't roll to the basket to catch a lob and hit a wide-open teammate in the corner. He is negating our best player. DISGUSTING!

I hate Izzo and his bully ball tactics as much as the next guy but this just isn't true. Sissoko that year was a regular sub on that team and a starter the next season. But he was still put in to '89 Pistons Ayo and that was BS.

He’s turned a blind eye to bad behavior in his program for years. Lost respect for him when the Title IX and sexual assault events happened and he pretended that they didn’t exist.

He lost the plot years ago, but the media continues to give him a free pass.

Definitely played scared  Jake was terrified as he sank 2 FT to force OT.

They didn't lack effort. It was a war. Lost a road game vs. top 10 team with very suspect officiating (particularly in OT) while missing KB.

I think MSU is a deeply flawed team. You force Fears to shoot, you beat Michigan State. You let him penetrate and force contact to get him to foul line, you play right into his game. Wasn't a fan of playing man as much as we did because of that, but we still had ample shot to take this game.
I think we Tried to stop him penetrate but to no vail when men to men. Zone works better and we should have stuck to it in OT.

Keaton was bad tonight. No excuses. His decision making was extremely poor, the ball stuck when they ran at him, he got stuck in the lane with nowhere to go with the ball and defensively he got lost quit a bit.

He has to own this one, just as he owns his big games. I think he'll handle it and move on. Can't let this effect his confidence.

Just a thought. Are you absolutely certain that Tomi is not doing exactly what BU wants him to do....stick to the arc and bury a three? But I would agree, he needs to roll to the hoop more often and get the ball in the lane to kick or finish. Unfortunately, the MSU bigs are quick enough to prevent him finishing too often as he does not have any moves at the rim other than a dunk or layup. But he did kick a time or two to open shooters and I like that.

He basically kinda pop but not enough with the help defender. We should try to P&R with big Z more often but seems like the staff prefers popping.

Call me crazy. Don't think the refs lost this game for the Illini. They were miserable both ways. That being said, how does Fears get away with ANOTHER trip and we get literally no call at all? What's it going to take? A player being seriously injured before we get any consequence? This is a huge stain on Big Ten basketball and the conference and they NEED to figure it the **** out right now.

It's called a pick and pop. Maybe it's what he's told to do?

FWIW, we did slip the pick with Mirkovic and Stojakovic in that second half and had success.

Even foul counts does not mean officiating wasn’t a factor. Surely this doesn’t require explanation.
