Terrible officiating
Bad shooting night
Wagler was awful tonight (he's single handedly won us a few, so I'm not actually mad... but even a solid Wagler game and we probably win)
Davis was not good

Rest of the team played excellent. I thought we battled and did as much as we could to win, despite the ref show.

And still, we lost by 3 in OT at Breslin.. Go Illini

The fouls and FTs were about even though.

IL was 20-24
MSU was 20-23

IL shot 12 more threes.

I don’t see officiating factoring in here. It was about as even as it gets from the stats.

IL- 21 fouls
MSU- 19 fouls

This only means anything if you assume every team fouls at the same exact rate all game

if one team hacks EVERY time down the floor and the other doesnt, and they have the same # of fouls, that doesnt mean the officiating was balanced. That is just to show that looking at foul count is not the barometer

And even if you do take that as the barometer, youre forgetting that MSU intentionally fouled 3 times the last possesion of the first half bc they had fouls to give, somehow MSU, who avg 16 fpg, only had 3 in 20 mins into this physical game.

we are the 2nd least fouling team in all of college bball at 12 per game

Plus i was talking about loose ball rebound fouls specifically where we'd get the board then all of a sudden whistle was blown. Kohler and cooper were throwign dudes around all game down there

In the OT...fears got 2-3 phantom calls including the one where he ran into kohler (which tomi fouled out on), but mirk clobbered twice with no calls.......officiating absolutely played a part

we were up 2 in OT when this happened

This was our first possession of OT down 2, fears fully pulling mirk

Game completely flipped from that Tomi foul onward:

I rarely ever say anything about the officiating, but missed calls led to at least 12 points from just a quick mental recap.

The second biggest one is the (in)advertant trip from Fears that then led to an open three.

The biggest one was where Kohler got the offensive rebound when we were up 1 at the end of the game and then proceeded to drag his pivot foot about two feet before he passed it for a three for us to go down two.

It was made obvious very early on that one side was allowed to be much more aggressive with their defense than the other.

Outside of that, Wagler tried to do too much and their aggressiveness got us out of our game. Besides ALL of those things, we still took them to OT and controlled most of the game. They are not very good and this is the first game we needed KB. If you said we'd take 2 of 3 against Purdue, Nebraska, and MSU on the road, I'd have been ecstatic a couple weeks ago.

It's just a tough one to lose when it's fairly obvious that the officiating crew isn't equipped well enough to do their jobs by watching some film on the foul baiting, walking OSHA violation, that is Jeremy Fears.

These refs and this style of play vanish in the NCAAs. Along with Izzo’s chances of ever winning another title.

These two things are both true:

1. That was not our best game. Keaton didn’t play well, especially offensively, and they had a good defensive game plan for him. We didn’t shoot it well. We didn’t rebound well. We looked a little gassed down the stretch. A few weeks of playing a 7 man rotation is likely catching up to us. Nice to have a longer rest this week after the Wisconsin game.

2. The refs didn’t have their best game either. I understand sports are difficult to referee and it takes a special human to endure the level of animosity they receive night in and night out. I respect that. However, there were some truly baffling calls down the stretch. And not flagrant’ing the blatant trip is just awful. They’re gonna get somebody hurt if they don’t start penalizing Fears’ dirty play.

That said, this was one of our worst games of the year, yet we still could have, maybe even should have won on the road against a top 10 team. I’ll take it.

The guys just need to catch up on some rest and get Kylan back. Still poised for a run in March.

this reminded me of the uconn game except we are better and it took overtime by MSU with the refs to win versus losing easily. we are well suited to go against adversity going forward. this sucked though because we could/should have won

Win or lose, stylistically MSU games are always unpleasant watches. Inelegant offense and can't-call-them-all defense where they try to bludgeon you with dirty play. Given all that -- our poor shooting, the poor reffing, Keaton's off night, Kylan out, on the road in a hostile environment -- we still almost won, should've won.

This is the first time I've seen Fears for a full game, and the kid is bush league. Like a Grayson Allen, but it's more hard-wired into his game. And Izzo enables/encourages it.

Is it a coincidence that Ayo got his nose broken at MSU, KJ fouled out in what seemed to be 10 minutes of playing time at MSU and then we had this game at MSU? I’ll be generous and say they have a home court advantage fed by the energy of the fans. But man, it seems like Sparty gets a permission slip to play some hack-etball. Would love to see these teams play in the B10 tourney on a neutral court.

KJ was 9 minutes i think

I watched most of the game turned way down so just crown was discernible. Looks like it was the right call.

This is one of those games that just makes Big Ten basketball look bad. I've had many friends that aren't fans of either team text me and say "you guys got screwed bad" (or something similar). You typically don't see entire games this horribly called when you watch other conferences. It isn't just us, I've seen other teams get similar treatment. Football also has these problems.

Why does the Big Ten have these problems over and over and over?
Do we have just the most incompetent and/or corrupt refs in the country?
Is Big Ten leadership so bad and/or corrupt that they don't want to correct this in any way?
Can anything be done about this or is this just destined to repeat every season?
Do Athletic Directors and Coaches have any recourse with the conference?

Looking back on the first Nebraska game we lost at home, they beat us fair and square. They had an incredible shooting night and won the game. It was a respectable win and I tipped my hat.

This game wasn’t even basketball and it seemed like they got away with a lot more pushing and shoving, whereas anytime we were physical we got a whistle. I’ll be curious to see how they do in March. This style of play doesn’t seem like it’ll translate well to a single elimination tourney on a neutral court.

I’d also love to see Fears get suspended at some point this season. I think it’ll be good for him and the game.

I feel better about us coming out of this game. A tough, physical game we controlled throughout. Went to OT on the road against a top 10 team. Our best player played his worst game of the season and we still had a chance in that environment. National Championship incoming!!!! LFG!

#422
This might just be a bit of prisoner of the moment because I think Nebraska is better than MSU and in the end, the win over the Huskers will likely look better than a win at MSU would.

But right now I would trade that win last week for a win tonight because I am just so sick of losing these types of games at the Breslin, especially when I know we have a better team.

We are a better team than Sparty this year, we have a better program right now and I am flat out pissed that we have lost four straight to that overrated team.

#423
Given Fears' well known tactics, I didn't like our defensive choice to still chase him from behind even with our height advantage.

#424
I love this team. We have a lot of good players that do multiple things very well and one of them will be coming back from an injury. The opposing team is going to have play really well and need breaks like MSU did tonight to beat us. And those breaks include our best player having his worst game of the season.

#425
Not even worried about the outcome of this game. Actually kinda glad it happened. This team is not going to get beat on a neutral court unless the opponent is playing out of their mind! This game only made us much stronger! Now go take care of business!
