After a long time to digest (including my traditional night-duty commute some 5 hours ago to now) -- here's my honest breakdown on some of the calls/no calls in this game.

To begin, the officiating was advantage MSU for.... pretty much the entirety. The first half was IL: 8 fouls. MSU: 4 fouls (note: it ended up 8 to 6 because they used their fouls to give in the final 10 sec). Remind you, Illinois is one of the least fouling teams in America, and MSU played extremely physical.

Absolutely no idea why the Fears trip wasn't called. Izzo had a completely unhinged tantrum when they went to go take a look -- wonder how much that factored into their decision.

All in all, while the first half was discouraging, I don't think it was nearly as bad as where it got to at the end of regulation / start of overtime.

There's 5 plays specifically that I'd like to point out, all occurring in the timeframe of 2H 1:59 and OT 1:47. Would guess most of these are on X by now (if you have the game saved you can obviously rewatch).

Replay shows Wagler getting absolutely HAMMERED by Jordan Scott of MSU on a layup attempt -- no call.

To me personally, this was the worst no-call of the entire game because it results in a 4pt swing, as MSU immediately comes down and gets a rebounding foul on Mirk and converts 2 FTs. Was it a foul? Probably yes (not a great angle, didn't see a replay). But don't think it warrants a whistle if the one on Keaton didn't seconds ago.

I think this one is the most excusable of these five plays. It's basically the same exact thing as the IU-WISC game, just as Jason Bennetti acknowledged. I think it warrants a call, as Cooper clearly trips him, but MAYBE you could make the argument Wagler's first to lose his balance. Haven't seen a slomo, but broadcast does show a replay.

First play of overtime, 100% a foul on Fears. Simply couldn't be a more blatant. Wraps up Mirkovic, flings him as he attempts a shot... but no call.

Just a flat out hysterical call to foul out Tomi. Literally no orange jersey touches Fears as he falls to the ground. We can see he was actually bumped by his teammate Kohler.

Very, very critical play as we had a 2pt lead, and pretty much unraveled afterwards.

EXTREMELY soft and-1 foul given to Fears, called on Stojakovic. With the amount of stuff they got away with on our end, genuinely comical this gets a whistle.

Overall, this was the stretch the zebras took over -- totally swallowing the whistle on our end, and handing out touch fouls on theirs.
On the last one, he stuck out his back leg to force his foot to make contact with Andrej’s knee. Totally unnatural motion.

Shot 29% from 3
Shot 37% overall
Outrebounded by 9
Keaton 2 of 16
Kylan on the bench

Lost by 3 in OT at Breslin after missing a game-tying shot.

Not too shabby, right?

We’ve won 2 of the 3 games we really should have lost without Kylan. Give us Kylan in this game and I swear we win.

I also felt like we had to lose a game or two somewhere so that our winning streak wouldn’t get that long heading into post season. Might as well have been this one.

I don’t really hate any team but Izzo and the !!!!ing Spartans. He and his team are everything I hate. !!!! them.

I know we lost, but man, we are so good. To play like such !!!! in a few areas and still be right there with a chance to win? That’s awesome.

The astounding thing is people who allegedly are supposed to know better think he’s actually good!

Where can I get a job where I can be so consistently bad and get to the top of my profession?

you know what ??............I'll say what any reasonable BB fan said after watching the game last night..........

1. screw tom izzo....................complete embarrassment as a coach and a human being..........he has hid scandal after scandal that his basketball players have committed.............he looked the other way on that trainer misconduct......his constant crying and whining on the sidelines is tired and needs to be addressed by the B$G.....good luck with that ever happening...............

2. screw jeremy fears.........he is a little b**ch who is the dirtiest player since grayson allen...............someone needs to give him some payback with his own dirty tactics......let fears get tripped numerous times , get his gonads kicked repeatedly and get clobbered in the back of his head like he has done all season long.........him getting praise for his behavior is repulsive and obscene........

3. screw the inmates of the breslin detention center...........they are nut jobs with little hope of escaping the terrible state of scumland and doing anything positive with their inbred lives................

4. screw every B$G ref..............every last one of them...............from d j bald head ref all the way down to the newest refs this year......they call games with such ineptness that when the Dance starts the B$G players have little clue how to play with non B$G refs doing a game.............

I wish I could post a /s at the end of this post but doing that would NOT be the pruman91 way of saying how I feel and what I saw last night..........it really really wouldn't......................

hope this post doesn't get me in trouble , but dammit I just felt this needed to be said............it's time criminals and dirty players need to be held accountable for their misconduct , not praised..........................

JMHO.................

Should have played zone all night. Especially when we got up 9. Even with the terrible calls, we had so many opportunities to win this game. Terrible time to have a really bad shooting night. It happens. Just don't make a habit of it lol.
Lost the battle on the boards, playing zone might have contributed.

Last night’s game was an old-style Big Ten brawl where a football game broke out on the basketball floor. On that level, it was fun and entertaining.

From a basketball fundamentals point-of-view, the Illini lost this game for two main reasons. First, Wagler was having a rare off-night. No shame in that – it happens to everyone. But the problem was he kept forcing his game time and again when it just wasn’t there. Ill-advised drives into traffic and rushed and poor shot selection. That caused numerous failed possessions with no Illini points.

But the main reason the Illini lost was their horrendous interior defense. They let Fears Jr. drive to the hole all game long with ease – and Fears had his way with the Illini. The Illini are supposed to have size and length – where was that in protecting the paint? It was completely absent. That’s the main reason the Illini lost. And even with that terrible interior defense the Illini almost pulled it off to steal one after such a poor defensive performance.

Come Tournament time the Illini cannot afford this kind of effort. Refs are going to be refs. You can't control that. But you can control how (and IF) you play defense and how you're going to best use your offensive possessions. If they allow this to happen again (and you can bet the video of this will be viewed repeatedly by Illini opponents)... it will be a too-early exit for an Illini team that should be capable of Final Four status.

It could have been a glorious night. Instead... that Michigan State Green just turned us all Blue in the face and sick to our stomach...

This is what I continue to not understand.

Fears’ dirty play and flopping were all over national college basketball media this week. The conference has to know about all of the negative publicity.

A good officiating coordinator and assignor gets this crew on a Zoom call Saturday morning and says we cannot have what has occurred this week happen tonight. It’s a Fox national game. The national media has been all over us this week. You guys need to deal with it quickly. That clearly didn’t happen. It’s like everyone ignored the events of this week.

I’m a high school and former small college soccer official. I watch video and talk with officials to know about “problem children” in my games, and I deal with them. I don’t understand how a major college basketball conference can’t deal with a problem like this, except to only assume they don’t want to deal with it.

The officiating coordinator and assignor should honestly lose their jobs over this. The new assignor should tell Jeff Anderson that he can take his fake high knees ref show to the Horizon League. The conference looks like a joke right now, but they won’t do a thing about it.
You are giving the conference way too much credit. They were all about righting the ship for one of their golden children. A three game losing streak was not going to be allowed to happen for MSU at this point in the season. They think they did the right thing. No way ANYBODY will ever be fired or reprimanded in any way, shape or form. This has been their MO for decades, literally. It is approaching professional wrestling territory with the way they mismanage their product.

We win because we outrebound teams, foul less, make 3s and score from the inside.

MSU outrebounded us by 11, scored 6 more inside points and had a higher 3 pt and free throw percentage. If we do better to any of these 4-5 stats we likely win the game. We shot very poor from 3s in second half.

MSU is very fast, bit allowed to many fast break points. Despite all this and refs allowing MSU a lot of leeway abd calling the Illini tight, it took an OT and missed 3 in OT for #10 MSU to win.

Really needed Boswell to defend Fears and his overall leadership. Also to give a couple players a breather.

There was no way the refs were going to call anything such as the trip on Mirk at home in front of Izzo. If the refs had called it Izzo would have been T-Ed and thrown out. I would like to the explanation they gave to Brad over the tripping call.

Telling your sports fan coworkers that we lost because our freshman guard had his worst game of the season…and his line was 16/6/3 is one of the weirdest sports convos you might have this week.

Followed closely by our 6’9” power forward was the 2nd best guard on the floor.
🤷🏼‍♂️

I can’t stand the way MSU plays.

Not worried about that loss, that whistle will never happen in the NCAA tournament.

The fact we had a chance to win with no Boswell and an awful game from Wagler says more to me. On to the next one.
Apparently you are too young to remember the national title game against North Carolina. Augustine was getting called for ghost fouls on May.

The fortunate thing about the NCAA tournament is that they actually officiate games like they are basketball games instead of bar fights. That should benefit Illinois significantly since they actually want to play basketball.

It’s okay, this was MSU’s Super Bowl. Just another road game for us.

Wagler played poorly

10/36 from three which lead to some fast breaks from them

Outrebounded by 10

No Kylan - would have been big against the punk

Refs screwed us most of the game but especially in the second half and OT

A few things…

Mirk FT violation

Shouldn’t have gone away from letting Mirk cook when he came back in after the rest

Z has to be smarter. Don’t swat the ball out of bounds, keep it inbounds. Love the rim protection but we’ve seen a few things from Z where I wish he would play a little smarter instead of just going for the emphatic play

All in all this just reminds me how easy it is to root against MSU for the rest of the year.
We also missed some big free throws down the stretch that would have helped seal the win.

We lost the game because none of our coaches can figure out how to stop a pick and roll. We let a 6 ft. Guard score, who can't shoot at all, because we can't stop it. The same thing happened at Purdue and it has been a problem many times in the past. This is ridiculous, as Fears can only do it in one direction.

With bam out (who could lockdown fears) and an off Keaton night we still went to OT with some questionable officiating. Happens, need to not let it derail us

And neither could Michigan, as he put up 31/7/5/4stl in their game.

About time we quit gaslighting our own team/coaches and realize there's really good players in the Big Ten (yes, I get he's dirty, but he's been very good for them this year).

Just because of e other team couldn't doesn't mean anything. If you have watched the Illini in the last few years any team that does it has success. We gave up 25 with 15 assistance.

Props to Wagler for making his free throws on an off shooting night. To score 16 points while only making 2 FG is noteworthy. 10-12 from the line.

Also, I think Mirk scored 4 baskets with his left hand last night. Impressive stuff.

I don't feel bad about this loss at all waking up this morning. A lot of adversity dealt with last night, and they still almost won.

I think a player like Kylan Boswell helps with this

Of course we've stopped PnR this season or we wouldn't be 20-4 and 11-2 in the B1G

You just used the 2 best PGs in the nation as your examples, sometimes those guys play well 🤷‍♂️

Difference in the standings right now -- the ref crews assigned in Breslin.

Michigan got a no-nonsense crew with Szelc and Reed that called flagrants, didn't bend over to Izzo and gave Michigan a fair shake.

We get High Knees and Pfieffer ... the B10's recipe to throw Izzo a bone when he needs a Breslin win. Refs do their part and MSU wins a dog fight.

Of course lots of things we could have done to still win this game, but it was set up to give MSU their best chance to win.

Rebound sucks and we couldn't stop Fears.
We were tired playing that physical with only 7 guys. When Boz comes back, we will be at full go. I it’s we would have had Rodgers, different result. You could tell in the OT when they were shooting Fts an d Kohler just went around I believe David like nothing to get the rebound. We need to learn top grab rebounds instead of tipping them on the defensive side. We will be ok as we really only have one hard game left which is home vs Michigan. Win out and we are the regular season champs.

This one hurts. Zebras made the difference on the last Tomi phantom foul followed by the no call on Mirk’s drive.
I guess this kills the narrative that somehow Kylan should have a smaller role when he gets back. We could have used his defense and ball handling tonight.
Nope, didn’t hurt much. We are still on the 2 line, we have one tough game left and we can easily run the table and go 18-2 Anna get the 4th number 1 in March. Boz coming back in a week or so will help immensely.
