Michigan State: Mel Tucker fired

#203
Right. That’s when it became a matter affecting the public reputation of the university, another contract violation. Three strikes: the call, retaliation, publicity.

Read the USA Today article for the chronology. His cancellation of her next training session just 3 days in advance and with no explanation was her last straw, prompting her to come forward. If he hadn’t done that, he might have gotten away with the call itself, at least until his arrogance led him to step on his stick in some other way.

He also lied publicly about the call, saying it was “from the privacy of his home”. University travel records have since been released showing he was in Florida on university business at the time. Why lie? Character.
Do you have a link to USA Today article? I don't understand the "retaliation" piece.

Names that Rittenberg mentioned as possible replacements for Tucker:

Favorites
-Pat Shumur, Colorado offensive analyst
-Mike Elko, Duke head coach
-Jason Candle, Toledo head coach
-Jonathan Smith, Oregon State head coach
-Lance Leipold, Kansas head coach
-Chris Kleiman, Kansas State head coach

Others to watch
-P.J. Fleck, Minnesota head coach
-Jake Dickert, Washington State head coach
-Charles Huff, Marshall head coach
-Sean Lewis, Colorado offensive coordinator
-Matt Campbell, Iowa State head coach
-Harlon Barnett, Michigan State acting head coach
-Mark Stoops, Kentucky head coach
-Jim Leonhard, Illinois senior football analyst
I see this list of names and if I am a coach at P5 school I would try and get a raise but no way am I going to MSU. Now the Oregon State, Washington St coaches I could see why they would go

... and Jo-Ellyn Tucker's attorney and investment advisor.

Work as a transaction intermediary can be lucrative. You get 'em coming and going!
One has to respect and applaud your comedic genius, although I think much of it is wasted on some of the folks here.

SB Nation had short article on why Leonhard should be considered for the MSU opening.

Even OSU is iffy, Johnathan Smith is a former Oregon State QB so MSU has to pay up.

Here is my idiot takes on these candidates

-Pat Shumur, Colorado offensive analyst
I know he has the Deion shine, but this would be like hiring Matt Nagy or Nathaniel Hackett at HC. Heck Jason Garrett would be a massive upgrade

-Mike Elko, Duke head coach
Good idea, but he like playing school as a coach. Also Texas A&M also will want him.

-Jason Candle, Toledo head coach
He may know the area, but is he viewed as the next Campbell? Is being the next Campbell a good thing.

-Jonathan Smith, Oregon State head coach
Smith is not just OSU's HC, he is a former QB there, so you better up.

-Lance Leipold, Kansas head coach
If there is chance, MSU should take it!

-Chris Kleiman, Kansas State head coach
Good coach, but not an exciting candidate.

-P.J. Fleck, Minnesota head coach
LOL for both Minnesota and MSU if this happens.

-Jake Dickert, Washington State head coach
He can beat Wisconsin.

-Charles Huff, Marshall head coach
A branch of the Saban tree.

-Sean Lewis, Colorado offensive coordinator
Lewis and Leipold is the top candidates imo.

-Matt Campbell, Iowa State head coach
Stock way down, he may take the job.

-Harlon Barnett, Michigan State acting head coach
This is his audition tape.

-Mark Stoops, Kentucky head coach
Stoops has killer job security and a great contract at Kentucky and they have SEC cash.

-Jim Leonhard, Illinois senior football analyst
Bummer if we lose him.

I hear what you’re saying, but you cannot overstate the lure/import of being in either the BIG or SEC. There are very few slots and the $/ NIL will continue to be a greater divide in the comics years.

It will be interesting to see how much MSU offers. I would be surprised if they didn’t had to pay Mel some of his contract. I just don’t know how much.

I am also not sure what MSU expect from football. If they want to beat scUM every year that will be hard or are they happy with 7-9 wins a year

I think he means Tucker cancelled her contract w MSU when sexual relationship did not progress/or was terminated.
Exactly, classic retaliation and apparently the catalyst for her complaint. It also means his goose is cooked legally. There’s no viable defense for retaliation. Idiot.

Given the coaching change at MSU, any Spartan football players interested in relocating to the friendly confines of Memorial stadium???????

Plainfield
I think MSU will have a harder time hiring a good coach than many think. The administration handled things horribly including the AD. As Nick Saban has said who the AD is means a lot in where a good coach will work. If the don’t launch their AD he may have as hard a time as Mike Thomas did hiring good coaches.

A 36 minute late night phone call? Would love to hear the rest of the story. She volunteers to stay on the phone and listen to him bop his baloney? Then decides she was harassed? Somehow doubtful Tucker's version is the whole truth. Incredibly stupid on Tucker's part whatever the rest of the story is but there is no end to the number of people who are so wrapped up in their own ego that they honestly believe they are untouchable. Until they aren't.
I think you've just given Tucker his new nickname - "The Big Bopper"! 🤪🤣🤪

Agreed that this would be hilarious, but when is the last time a Big Ten coach has gone from one conference school to another, in football or basketball? It seems like a pretty unwritten rule that this is a no-no. And that is kind of interesting, because I feel like it happens more in other conferences, especially the SEC and Big XII.

to my knowledge , a direct move of a HC in football or hoops from one B1G school to another hasn’t occurred in like 60 - 70 years
