Mike Thorne granted 6th year

Watch, the NCAA follows this up with denying Abrams his 6th year. The thing that most surprises me about this ruling is that the NCAA was willing to set this kind of precedent with Thorne for future cases.

Slightly off topic, but didn't Maurice Creek at IU a couple years back fracture his knee caps in back to back pre-seasons and ended up not getting cleared for a 2nd consecutive waiver? Was there some reason he wasn't cleared? My buddy is trying to argue the Tracy situation isn't as black and white as it seems. He keeps referencing Maurice Creek.

Your buddy 'disremembers'. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurice_Creek

As a freshman during the 2009-10 season, Creek started the first 12 games of the year before suffering a season-ending injury. In the team's game against Kentucky that year he scored 31 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc. Following that game he was the top scoring freshman in the country with a 17.3 point average through the first nine games. In seven straight games he scored in double figures and, prior to his injury, was in early discussions for freshman of the year honors.
As a sophomore during the 2010-11 season Creek played in 18 games and started 13 before once again suffering a season-ending injury, this time a stress fracture in his knee that required surgery. Remarkably, just days before the Hoosiers reached the official start of practice for the 2011-12 season, Creek suffered yet another injury, this time a torn left Achilles. The injury was his third within 22 months and caused him to sit out the entire season. As a result Creek decided to redshirt and is now considered part of the 2014 graduating class with Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey.
In June 2013, he transferred to The George Washington University for his final year of eligibility,[4] where he became the team's leading scorer and hit a buzzer beater to defeat the Maryland Terrapins

NCAA is a weird weird organization. Shocked on this one.

Great news though, expectations just got a whole lot higher Mr. Groce

Yes, it doesn't make sense at all, but I'm not going to complain.

Thorne, Mav, Finke, and Black upfront is a very nice rotation (with maybe a little help from Kipper and DJ). Let's just hope they all stay healthy and out of trouble.

Really great news on Thorne. With the dramatic improvement of Mav last year the team should be solid in the post as well as PF. Looking ahead to 2017 a lot of pieces will be there... But we will have a freshman center, (Assuming we can recruit one), unless Finke moves to the post.
Makes me wonder if Mav might be interested in working on a Masters, sitting a year, and coming back as a really solid post player on a strong 2017/18 team.

I don't know if you are joking, but I highly doubt this is an option, AND I find it ironic, as I was thinking about making a very clearly sarcastic joke about us having so much depth, it'd be great for Mav to redshirt! :thumb:

Very excited to see Mike back for another year. Good things happen to good people. I may actually start to look forward to next season...

I think all the NCAA did was to read and apply their own rules. That can never be a harmful precedent.

Love the news! Potential scholarship breakdown for 2016-17:

Sr - 6
Jr - 0
So - 6
Fr - 1

Not quite the balance JG was preaching when he arrived, but good news for next year's recruiting class.

Depending on what happens with nunn, and also kipper's waiver there could be 5 sr, 5 so, and 3 fr

It will be interesting to see what happens to Mav.

Well, so long as Big Mike can stay healthy our interior defense and rebounding should be MUCH improved over last season, especially with Black on board again, too. Our frontcourt just went from a major weakness to a strength. I'm looking much more forward to next season now!

Great news!!! I thought this was a fair solution to Thorne's situation. Team, Coaches, and Player tried to do the right thing and his health didn't cooperate. Very familiar with Type 1 diabetes. No regulatory control of glucose (blood sugar) causes constant watch of those levels with glucose monitors and even with vigilient observation levels can go 3x-4x normal levels.

Not concerned about precident, most talented players bolt for the NBA. No problem with players in Thorne's situation granting another year.

Would not be surprised if Thorne doesn't return to last year's pre-injury form and we see Mav starting. Mav looked good towards the last 8 games and now we have added depth with Thorne, Savage, and Finke. Will likely see some DJ and Kipper at PF position. Although I see Kipper backing up Hill as well.

Can't believe we were able to bring Mike back to life from NCAA bureaucratic purgatory.

No pressure, Mike, but we're counting on you to retake the North (of the state).
