That’s probably the reason why Altmeyer has lost so much confidence. Open up the playbook and let the kid throw it down the field. I think once they let him pass more and get in a rhythm he will start gaining his confidence back. Kid looks rattled in the post game interviews.
Luke is the best QB we've had here in 30+ years. He's working with a sub par line as evidenced by the 20+ sacks he's endured so far this year. Put him behind a world class line, and you'll see a world class QB. We have the RB's and WR's . . . we need an OL that matches.

I’m really surprised that we haven’t recruited harder in the trenches. We need some more athletic and bigger dudes up front.

I don't think it is for lack of trying. NIL and the way the portal works has presented new challenges. It takes time to build a quality line unless you have lots of NIL to spend there. The teams with the best lines have also had the most stability in coaching staffs/continuity. We will get there.

I couldn’t watch it all. It was painful to see.

While we can blame NIL for a lot of things, at a school like ours where this so much differential with the NIL of the elites, at some point you simply need to hit on some of your recruits in your development process. And the problem is we just haven't in the Bret era for o line. At all. Yes, there is randomness to it, but when you compare the Oline classes to our DB classes, you see a night and day difference. Not only have we identified underrated, extremely talented DBs under Bret but also developed them into a fleet of draft picks. The OL... We've been one of the worst if not the worst power conference team.

So yes, we can blame NIL, we can't just go out and buy 1, let alone 5 power 5 elite linemen, but at the same time, somebody does need to take some blame here. Because you either have a talent evaluation problem, a talent development problem, an oline coaching problem, or some combo of the 3. It's not like MAC schools have NIL treasure troves compared to us and are buying better OLines and yet most seem to have them...

In slo-mo everything looks intentional. It clearly was not intentional, and the there was nothing done that was illegal. Just an awkward play.
OK, then look at it in real time. Look how high he lifted Luke. Then spun him around upside down. And then “downed” him. That could have broken Luke’s neck. The “Sack”

This school and students should be ashamed of themselves. This stadium was full except for the north stands (maybe 3/4 at best…maybe.) our school has sold out for the almighty dollar and home state kids have to get whats left. And the bathroom deboggle we had today, not letting people use certain port a pottys when the south bathrooms are flooded. Ludacris. Clown show.
A LOT of students were sitting in the main stands with parents this week.

"missed opportunities sting" pretty much sums up life as an Illini fan, honestly.

I'm not going "whoa is me" we lost.....coming into this season most of us were praying for at least 4 wins and protect our recruiting efforts as Bret continues to build.

This was expected, we are banged up, but have shown up in every game to keep it within one score in the 4th quarter.

Say what you will, but at least we don't have a reason to shut the tv off until the clock hits 0:00, and for a long time that was not the case.

Let's learn from this one, support the boys and coaching staff so we can hopefully go to bowl games for the foreseeable future and stay competitive!
Yep. This is the reality of Illinois football and I love the fact that we hang with everyone but the top tier teams. At this point, I find it totally acceptable..

We are wearing down just like in '22. A reflection of our lack of depth. Hopefully, we can recover during the next 2 weeks are string 2-3 wins together. Gonna be a challenge.
This is what I was going to say. We’ve arrived at the point of the season where two months worth of banging are catching up with the team. That’s normal for every school — the difference is we don’t have the horses behind the horses to be strong as October turns into November.

And make no mistake, Minnesota is no different than us in that regard. However, today, in a coin flip game, they did the little things better and got a few breaks that we didn’t.

I’m certainly not a football expert but I thought lifting a runner, turning him upside down and driving him headfirst into the turf was against the rules somehow.
Weird,,when I said that during the game I was told it was a good play.NOT. #5 for Minnesota is a cheap shot artist. Re-watch the game keeping a watch and you will see,,dirty player

We knew this game would be close. Minny is good. Take away that forced fumble by Altmyer late in the game and we might well have forced overtime. BTW, I don't blame Luke for that fumble; that edge rusher got him from behind; like many have said, our O line is weak. There's a reason we can't run the ball effectively. That said, there's no reason we can't win out the rest of the season.

I think we've seen the ceiling on Lunney. There are just too many wasted plays that are equivalent of "here, run it up the middle" for no gain. If we don't stay on schedule, it just kills our offense.

It seems like there is always 1-2 plays a drive that kill us and we are now 2nd and 9 or 3rd and 7. We have the best QB and WR talent we've had in a long time and we don't use it enough in my opinion.

We get so conservative in the red zone and settle for field goals. Open up the playbook and let them play.

Way too many times we get into 2nd and 3rd and long. It feels like very rarely we are ahead of the sticks. I don’t think the issue is the play book not being opened up. The problem is we aren’t settling up plays and are very predictable. Minn killed us with their run blitzes because they knew our tendencies. Even when we had Faegin this offense really never had an identity.

We usually move the ball with the scripted plays and then struggled after that. Hopefully when we do a self scout this week they change some things up. With this team we need to play from ahead and control the ball. Our defense was depleted and wore down

This is an issue I have with BLJ play calling. I feel like our play calling especially to start the game could be so much more beneficial to Luke. Why don't we come out and throw a few high percentage bubble screens and some levels style bootlegs where Luke can have an option to use his legs. Build his confidence a little instead of run 2x up the middle for 1 yards a piece and then be forced into a position where our OL has to hold up for a long time. Idk if Bret is too much in the kitchen with BLJ or if he is just intrinsicly this discordant with his play calling but I never really feel like our offense is in rhythm. It's just disjointed plays that work or don't work.

Hate to lose that one. Everything just felt “off” to me.

This was my first game in person this season. The video board was playing video of military introducing themselves and saying I-L-L during the first part of the 3 in 1. Please tell me this was operator error (a big one) and that we don’t play things in the scoreboard while the band is playing at halftime?
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed. It was almost sacrilegious. Should not be done.

I don’t know if it hasn’t been called, but slants used to be a staple of the offense. I think Bryant caught one, and got hurt in the play. And then another wasn’t thrown until the missed 4th down where it was schemed against. Wonder if timing is off/ uncomfortable throwing it/ defenses have schemed against it.

#220
Coming into the game, Taylor and Jackson were the two to scheme against. Did not do a good job with Taylor. Should’ve committed an lb and safety to him each play. Db and another safety to Jackson once Scott left game.

Similar for scheming against Illini. Scheme it so Franklin and Bryant have two DB every play, make others beat you as they have not so far.

Laughery can’t run between the tackles unless it’s a draw. Valetine hits the hole hard but still needs to put on weight. McCray and Faegin do a good job when they run down hill.
