Minnesota 68, Illinois 59 POSTGAME

Do we even run an offense? Pick and rolls/pick and pops/a weave to create a clear out for MH/or pure one on one top of key crap. Most offenses are designed around a series of picks to open up space for layups, open shots, and dribble drives. Groce's offense has the sophistication of a frat house intramural team. Our defense is absolutely pathetic.
We give up more layups than any other team in the country. Time to let John go.

Not fair to say kids showed no heart or effort. No the way I saw it. But poor offensive system, everyone still seems lost, and terrible substitutions takes away any momentum over time.

That was my take. Thought the effort was fairly good, the results were putrid. Every now and again, someone has to make a basket. We shot for *&#&!

Groce saying in the post-game interview that he took JCL out b/c he didn't take a good 3 pt. shot and hesitated to take the shot....this is just a laughable offense at this point. Groce prefers to allow a freezing cold shooter to continue taking 3's rather than getting the shots to your hotter shooters...

to be any kind of offensive player you need to have or be able to do these 5 things IMO BB IQ, some athleticism, dribble, pass and shoot. I do not believe we have 1 player that has or can do these 5 things. We have maybe 2 or 3 players that has or can do 60% of these 5 things. It is getting really difficult to watch horrible basketball. This is not a pass for the HC or his staff. He is the architect of this mess and the engineer that drove this train off the tracks. This season just needs to mercifully come to an end

At this point I don't think I'd mind at all if JW asked Deon Thomas and Jerry Hester to take over the team for the rest of the season.

It gives players confidence and it's why players want to play for Groce. JCL is a good shooter, if he as an open shot he needs to take it.

Feel for kids. The fans see it. The players feel it. They just running system they taught every week. How would you feel as player that when down by eight or ten puts with 5 min left every game. I'ts run high pick, and then someone takes a contested three. Has to have players begging for better guidance.

That's one of those killers for this team. No recognition at all of where the few glimmers of hope are coming from.

By halfway through the first half, the efficiency score alone showed you who to play for max minutes this game. Oh, it's the same five that you already knew!

You had to play someone at SG, sadly. That's emerged throughout the year as a serious weakness. JCL is "ok" in the big picture. His play was atrocious today.

But hey, keep Kipper on the bench, keep JCL shooting... 0 for 10 was just fine. Add him to Tate and Abrams and we were 0 for 11, a complete offensive wasteland by 3 of our 4 backcourt players.

To build on that, offenses stall even worse when the expected shot is not taken. Considering our offense is already in a permanent stall, not taking that shot is a death penalty for that possession. Every coach in the world wants their best shooter taking a good shot no matter what they've done before that in the game. Plus it's all JCL does, so if he's not willing to shoot it, he becomes a net negative and needs to be replaced.

JCL didn't have it tonight. It's called a momentum-killing situation. Sometimes the player knows better than the coach. This is one of those moments. He takes JCL out for that laughable offense of not taking a 3 but leaves players like Tate or Thorne in after they make boneheaded turnovers or shot attempts. Not exactly the same logic applying if you ask me.

I was thinking that too. It is almost like he (the entire staff) isn't even watching what is going on, on the floor.

Tate never turned it over today.

As I said before, I have tried not to be negative but it seems as if our chances for a winning Big Ten season are gone, our chances for a winning over all season are slim, and Malcolm will never play in an NCAA tourney. I don't blame any player on these teams, they are of the best that wanted to be Illini. Our shots are contested from the catch, our opponents' shots are contested running from 10 feet away...we are in a scheme that can't win with this, or any talent level on the floor. Time for a change. :(

I'd have to believe at this point Coach Groce knows he's in trouble. I'd hate to know what that feels like to know you couldn't measure up on this big of a stage and your destiny has probably already been decided. I hope for everyone involved this thing doesn't spiral further out of control than it already is.

I'm talking about in general, not about today's game. Way too often, Groce has left players in after they commit dumb turnovers, plays, or take bad shots. So, taking a player out to teach him a lesson b/c he passed up a 3 is just an indictment on how the staff is focusing on all of the incorrect things at this point.

On a neutral court there is no team in the Big Ten that I think Illinois would beat. They beat Ohio State and Michigan early in the year but there is no way they could beat them now because that have gotten better and Illinois has regressed
