Crazy to think of the bad and tragic stuff off the field stuff that has happened to coaches who played/ were to play the Illini in the last 4 months.....Josephs at Neb, Beard at Texas and now Leach

I've been a fan of Coach Leach since he was at Texas Tech. Love his press conferences, always keeps it real.
Working in cardiology I've seen people come back from events you would think they'd never recover from; amazingly without any lingering deficits. So, it's possible he can recover from this. I sure hope he does. Prayers up!

another concerning tidbit here is that he didn't receive medical attention for 10-15 minutes after falling to the ground and required a defibrillator by EMS. if he was in a non-perfusing heart rhythm secondary to his heart attack, which is likely given that he required a defibrillator, that means that his brain didn't receive blood/oxygen for 10-15 minutes (assuming that no bystander CPR occurred, which is what I take "did not receive medical attention for between 10 to 15 minutes" in the article to mean). the "seizures" reported in the article could be secondary to anoxic brain injury/damage (ie. his brain didn't receive blood/oxygen for a significant period of time and was damaged).

all speculation based on the information provided but this scenario highlights the importance of bystander CPR. Get trained if you are not already! Immediate initiation of bystander CPR is critical in these scenarios and can be lifesaving. I hope he is okay.

From Finebaum :
He was supposed to be in Vegas last week where Sylvester Croom was being honored. And then I believe he was supposed to be in (Florida) for the bowl game and he ended up not being there. That alarmed some people and then we heard the news yesterday… I can’t speculate beyond what everyone has been saying but it is a jarring thing to wake up to on a Monday morning, to say the least."

I wondered why last week, when we saw pics of Bret Bielema in Tampa for the promo, that Leach wasnt there. He might not have felt well for a few days and didnt realize what was going on with his heart.

Sad indeed.

My local state Senator at age 45, Grant Wahl at 48, and now it appears that Coach Leach is suffering a sudden passing as well. Life is uncertain folks and tomorrow is not assured for any of us. Sending prayers to all of these families. Coach Leach has had a great career as a coach and leaves a family suffering a terrible loss.

Just be sure you let people know what you think of them (at least the good parts) sooner rather than later. There may not be a later.

Well said. And live every day with keen minds and gratitude in our hearts.

Life is fragile. And you just don’t always know when something like this will hit. My wife and I just had to provide at home hospice care for her uncle who had no kids. He was “only” 73 but he lived the healthiest most spartan life of anyone I know. He was also a track star at Georgia Tech in the era of Prefontaine so if anyone could live to 100 it would have been him. I feel awful for the family. It’s is tough to go through that and you always feel guilty you could have done more, done better. You just do the best you can and hope that it is good enough. Love and prayers.

I stopped looking for updates on his health because the reporting around most of it insults my sensibilities. So I just started looking up his best quotes.

"Golf’s pretty much for people that don’t swear effectively enough or need practice at it, and so there are people that need golf, and I don’t think I do."

"If you get into a fight, don't take your helmet off...We're looking for smart football players, not dumb ones. *In the interest of time*, don't get into any more fights today."

Very sad. He was a character and the football coaching profession will not be the same without him.
