I took Indiana because going to middle school in a small, central Indiana town during the IDKWTI saga was absolutely brutal. The amount of dread I felt going to school the next day after he hit that BS bank shot.

I didn’t grow up in the Metro East and actually voted for Indiana, but Missouri and Iowa are so damn close to #1 for me right now that it’s more or less a 3-way tie.
I’ll say this, there is no team in the NCAA that I have SUCH contempt for as Mizzou ... I might hate Indiana a tad more, but I can respect their tradition or their fans’ passion. I might hate Iowa a tad more, but I can look past that when they’re playing non-conference games, plus I have so many Hawkeyes friends. Mizzou? Literally not a good thing to say about them.

I was a freshman in Krush during that game. Though it was a heartbreaking loss in a game that we should've won, that may have been the most fun game in my 4 years of Krush. For the decade after the IDKWTI fiasco, my answer would have been Indiana. Now that they're well down the B1G totem poll, my answer is Iowa.

There us only one reason in my mind to give all disrespect and animosity to any rival program or school. That is simply one whose arrogance and hypocrisy are so bizarre and extreme that they deny leading all programs in their insistence to dwell in the gutter of filth and lies while lying and cheating at every turn. Everyone should know that I am talking about one of the first, if not the first, school to start cheating and lying and that continues to deny their history of such lowlife performance by their athletic dept. for over 100 years. That is Michigan....of course.

I grew up in a small town outside the Quad Cities, went to same school as Ethan Happ, just 10 years or so before him. My friends were Iowa fans for some stupid reason and it always p*ssed me off. I couldn't figure out why they rooted for another team when they lived in Illinois. I felt that should have been the school they rooted for. Unfortunately I was not smart enough to go to Illinois, but I have always been a fan of the state school of Illinois. The disdain I had for those who rooted for Iowa instead has caused me to always just HATE the idiots out wandering around.

Surprised Michigan and NW so low. I figured with Chicagoland that NW would be higher, but I guess that just shows how irrelevant they are. The big 3 (Iowa, Mizzou, IU) probably break down region specific to some sense. The St Louis/Metro East/SW Illinois area would lean towards Mizzou, the Quad Cities/Northern Illinois to Iowa, and Eastern Illinois/Downstate going with Indiana. I thought Wisconsin may end up a little higher due to the Rockford and other far northern parts of the state. Chicagoland probably is a mixture of everything just like with anything else. Coming from the Springfield area it seems Mizzou and Indiana are the biggest rivals depending on how relevant the programs are at that time.

To me it is more specific to the individual(s). Bobby Knight made Indiana #1. Fans can be another determiner, and I find Iowa fans often obnoxious and the coach (and Pearl from days gone by), well, I think that is obvious. OSU fans (outside of one game I attend in Columbus in '85 or '86) have always been good company (annoying for sure, but not rude). I hate that we are now losing football to NU, but no disrespect there and basketball still is nothing to care about outside a game or two. I still pull for all Big Ten teams away from the conference with limited exceptions.
Anyway, with all of that, it is still IU and will always be that way for me when we talk basketball.

And I guess I should have said that this is based on the question "hated Illini rival" not just rival.
Have to go with Indiana, even though other teams have shortened the gap. But the Bob Knight days, their dumb candy stripe pants, the Kelvin Sampson recruiting saga... All of that keeps them Rival #1 for me.

Bobby Knight. I hate Bobby Knight with the fire of a thousand suns. He's permanently stained Indiana, so it will be Indiana forever.
Different perspective-Ohio State. Most entitled fans. Football school acting like a university. So much cheating even had to fire the President and Band Director. In recent memory fired one football coach and two basketball coaches for cheating. Lived in Ohio and their fans are hard to take.
