NBA Draft

#3
Been looking at mock drafts today and TSJ has been all over the place. I’ve seen him as high as 12 and as low as out of the first round. He’s obviously a first round talent in this weak draft, however the pending charges leave a lot in the air right now. Which I’m sure we all knew that anyways.

I don't follow the draft, but other players that have had serious legal risks in the past, no? Makes me wonder if teams look at the legal side as part of their due diligence and try to put odds on how his case will go. Kind of terrible to think in those terms, but I would imagine GMs have to think through it.

Vecenie from The Athletic ($) does not have TSJ or Coleman in his latest mock, but he mentions in the comments it's specifically because of the pending legal case and his belief that GMs would not select him with charges still pending.

Just a stray thought. We hope for positive developments in the TSJ legal situation, and we hope for them fast enough to make him the lottery pick his talent warrants.

However, in the event that the positive developments do NOT come fast enough for whatever reason, going undrafted might not be the worst thing in the world for TSJ, especially given his age.

A first rounder must sign a standard rookie scale deal in which they are bound to their team for four years, the latter two being team options, and then are a restricted free agent at the end of the deal. Shannon would be entering his age 29 season before he'd even be able to sign an offer sheet as an RFA.

Second rounders or undrafted players can become an unrestricted free agent after four years, or can become an RFA after a shorter term (ie Ayo being an RFA after two years)

Plus of course an undrafted player is free to sign with any team.

It would offer a lot more flexibility, and in Shannon's case the ability to get paid that second NBA contract in his prime years much earlier.

I haven't been able to find an example of a player drafted with a pending felony charge. Allen Iverson had served his prison sentence. Pierre Pierce wasn't drafted. Kobe was already a superstar NBA player with a long-term max contract. Jalen Carter on the NFL side last year had already plead down to a misdemeanor and resolved the case without jail time. If there's a case I'm missing let me know.

I think it's a fairly open and shut case as to how it'll affect him at the NBA Draft. If the judge doesn't find enough probable cause to move to a trial a the May 10th hearing, the charge will be dropped and he will be drafted wherever his basketball talents warrant. If there is enough probable cause and there is a trial scheduled, then I imagine nobody will draft him.

When was the last time the #1 NBA college prospect had as little hype as Cody Williams? I know he was injured for part of the season but it’s bewildering to me how little media coverage he’s received…even top prospects from bad teams in the past got a fair amount of coverage

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is exactly what happens in the TJ case.

During the season, TJ isn’t able to plead guilty to a misdemeanor because any admission of guilt in a sexual based charge would likely get him kicked off the team.

But after the season ends, before the draft? I could see him pleading down.

that depends on the strength of the case. much more likely to fall apart, IMO

Agree, but can't "like."

It is a weak draft when most will have a hard time making the squad. This is a glorified G League draft because 75% of those drafted will be there.

Sounds like Hawkins would benefit from coming back for another year.
Probably extremely unlikely but imagine Hawkins returning for a 5th year, Domask getting a hardship waiver and returning, then adding Storr and a transfer pg.

Pair all of that with Ty, Dain, Goode, Amani, DGL/Nico then adding the 3 freshman.

somebody is going to get a steal in TSJ

- good outside shooter
- developed nice mid range jumper
- great defensive effort
- good size
- great on fast break
- good free throw shooter
- will keep working hard to improve
- reasonable ball handler
