NBA Draft

Guy was a blatant troll. No other way to put it.
Douchey posters aside, was it really that insane to question Tyler's position given his previous inexperience?

IIRC insiders did and it's why we saw a staff overhaul. I think we had a good season and an amazing postseason that was helped by upsets.

I want the illini success to be forever, but let's not dance on people's graves just yet

My interpretation from what I've seen as far as Intel:

• top 4 seems set; the order could vary depending on what happens with Utah picking between Peterson/Boozer

The run on point guards likely transpires like this (assuming no trades):

• Clippers: Brown or Wagler
• Nets: Brown or Acuff or Mara (Wagler cancelled his workout)
• Kings: Absolutely LOVE Acuff; but if he doesn't fall through, likely choosing Brown or Wagler (whoever falls to 7)
• Hawks: Mara or Flemings (or if one of the top guards fall)
• Mavs: LOVE Burries, but could change if one of the guards fall

Of course NONE of this is set in stone; just what sounds likely at the moment. But it begs the question that if it is between LAC and SAC for Keaton, that's pretty boom or bust as far as organization stature. So much of the "bust" conversations generally has to do with who is getting picked by a terrible organization.
Nets like Ament alot. More than Mara.

One insider did. The same insider that wanted to replace BU with Chris Beard and thought we'd regret not hiring Cuonzo Martin. As I recall other insiders thought the anti-Tyler stuff was crazy, because even back then he was orchestrating extremely efficient offenses.

Keep in mind that the post I quoted wasn’t written early in Tyler’s tenure. It was written after Tyler crafted the #3 ranked offense, then followed it up with the #17 ranked offense lead by two freshman, heading into a season that would finish with the #2 ranked offense lead again by two freshman.

Anyone, without an agenda, who listens to any of Tyler’s interviews can tell you this kid knows ball.

Essential to make sure he's here for as long as possible.

I think multiple folks had questions, particularly when Anderson left. Indy was definitely the most vocal but wasn't solo.

I'm happy we have him and I wonder if the idea that he has to leave to come back as a IL HC candidate will change as we keep seeing success.

Not completely sure why folks think Dybantsa is so ahead of Peterson.

AJ is like Melo while Peterson is like D-Wade.
To each their own, but AJ puts way more effort into both sides of the ball and intangibles than Melo. Peterson just stands around on offense waiting to shoot and doesn't do anything else. Wade was the opposite, he was an effort player. I would say Peterson is the undersized Carmelo. I wouldn't tough him with a 2nd round draft pick.

That's the question: should Josh, if he's still AD, just hand the head coach job to Tyler upon Brad's retirement, or should Tyler have to "earn" the position by being a successful hc at mid-major for a season or three?

Ryen Russillo had two NBA draft guys on his podcast. One of the negatives they see with Keaton is that he had too much of a coaching and scheme advantage playing for the Illini.

Remember when the experts on this board used to complain about our offense and not running enough set plays? Good times.

They even said Tyler has the chops to be an NBA head coach someday and I’m old enough to remember @bigcityillini filling us in on the lack of talent Tyler has:

“If you are talented enough you don't need to get hired by your dad. Others would take notice. If Tyler truly is that good of a coach as some here, say and is only making 120K (as some posters claim) then what the hell is he doing? Wouldn't he be selling himself short? He leads this elite offense and yet gets no national press... why?“

I guess he’s getting national press now.

Tim Legsler also made an interesting point on the Bill Simmons Show.

He thinks Wagler’s “extension” on his 3 ball is better than any of the other guards. Therefore, his shooting is most translatable.

I think it boils down to how long that time frame is before Brad is ready to retire. I think Tyler is almost as likely to get poached for an NBA staff at some point as a mid major HC job. Whichever path he prefers, I think he will have the chance to chase it.

Karim Lopez sounds like one that people are lower on.

Some talk of him on Werner’s podcast with MLT and Trotter. Vecinie also says he was “probably the worst defender in the NBL last year.”

Great intel about Morez’s solid demeanor and “professionalism.”

Stuff not working out here, and our fans not liking him, has no bearing on him being an awesome player. He’s always been the do-the-dirty work, 110% effort on every play guy. Incredible athlete - the combine numbers speak for itself. It won’t be his calling card, but there’s more than enough shooting potential. Always a spot for a guy like that in the league.

My unpopular opinion for CHI is that drafting Acuff / Wagler at 4 (maybe trading back), and getting Morez at 15 (maybe you trade up)

Is a better deal than Wilson at 4 and someone like Christian Anderson / Philon at 15.

Guards are what ultimately win you games in this league. The top of this guard class is ELITE. The guard quality of what’s available at 4 is NOWHERE NEAR the guard quality available at 15.

Does Wilson offer THAT much more than Morez in a very similar prototype? I’m not sure.

Wilson: 6”9 barefoot | 7ft wingspan
Morez: 6”9 barefoot | 7ft 3 wingspan

IMO, there’s just too much of a chance that 1or 2 of the PGs will end up All Star caliber guys.

From a skills perspective, probably not. From a gravitas perspective, maybe.

By gravitas I generally mean recruiting. I do not often see Tyler's name associated in that way. Which is perfectly fine, if that is not his main role in the system, and also does not take anything away from his technical brilliance.

I just wonder if older and established recruiting assistants would stay, or join, to work under, and report to, a very young HC.

Tyler found and recruited Wagler, that should earn some gravitas points

Didn't he have something to do with Wagler’s recruitment...?
