NBA Thread 2021-2022

Someone in the previous thread said players in the 2nd round of the draft are not under contract, but play summer league anyway. That seems odd to me. Anyone know if that's true? I thought even undrafted players can often get a contract that gives the team an option to pick them up. Seems like it would be bad for the athlete to take the risk of injury, but I suppose if you're talking NBA money, the drafting team has the upper hand in negotiation.

I’d guess that summer league is part of the negotiation strategy for some. Show out well and you can get a better deal. Someone, maybe Sturdy, said player up to about 40 typically get close to the same money and time as late 1st Rounders.

I initially responded incorrectly to that and looked up an article I read a couple years ago in SI to correct it.

Players aren’t under contracts but they get a $1500 “per diem” that can be given in a lump sum or broken down into smaller pieces and handed out in increments.

Bulls vs Pelicans (NBA Summer League)
Monday, August 9th, 2:00pm CT, ESPN2

Bulls Schedule

Malcolm Hill is on the Pelicans Summer League roster. Should be Ayo going up against Malcom in Monday's game.

A lot of players don't have the choice of taking on risk. Summer league is essentially a tryout to try to get a contract for everyone except the first round picks.

At the risk of sounding like Lovie I’d expect him to improve significantly from game 1 to game 2. Some players just need that first game to “know what to expect.”
Yeah, I hope so. Just an unfortunate beginning since the fouling and TOs are in line with how he played here -- doesn't suggest this was a one-time thing. I was hoping his passing and feel for the game would be amplified in the more wide open NBA game -- hopefully he can show that moving forward.

Ayo with a couple free throws on a nice aggressive rebound and drive, then a nice jumper. :)

These guys really don’t wanna pass it to Ayo
They're just standing around when Ayo does get the ball - no screens, no movement, Ayo can only pass it so someone can throw up a trash shot. Ayo's going to have to create his own shot.
