Part of me thinks the Big Ten is underrated, and that the reason for the conference logjam is the perennial cellar-dwellers (e.g. Penn St., Northwestern) getting better/older via transfers and COVID years. But then I go to fill out my bracket, and I still barely see any of these teams advancing very far due to various flaws. No way I am picking Iowa playing in Alabama against Bruce Pearl and Auburn... Iowa has burned me picking them in the past and Satan is a good tournament coach. I think Purdue will wilt under pressure with those freshman guards, maybe in round two. I still think Indiana is Charmin-soft and won't get far. No way Northwestern would get by UCLA in round two if they can beat Boise. I am tempted to ride with Penn St. getting to the Sweet 16 (always bet against Marcus Carr) but they've gotta beat Texas A&M first. Maryland is garbage away from home. That being said, I am an optimist, and I am hoping for a Steve-Lavin-at-UCLA-sort-of-run here for Illinois. Whatever happens, happens, but I would love to have some of these journalists have to talk about how the Big Ten doesn't actually suck for once.
