You guys remeber Gonzaga already beat Iowa by 11 this season and it wasn't even that close. Iowa had to make a comeback again the Gonzaga bench to make it that reasonable. That was also with Gonzaga coming off of 2 days of practice following a COVID pause....if people think Gonzaga is a paper tiger because their conference isn't good then they need to actually watch them play because Gonzaga is scary, multiple NBA lottery pick good.

The more I stare at our draw, the more challenging it looks. Of the seven other teams in the top half of our region, by my count we have four conference players of the year: Loyola, G.Tech, OK St. and Liberty. Half will be knocked out after the first round (since they're paired up), but it still indicates we're likely to run into some exceptional individual talent early on.

Not worried. Just thought it was interesting.

Keep choppin' wood!

I wouldn't underestimate the Zags. They beat some very good teams early in the season. Granted, if we had played them then we probably would've lost but if we play them now I'd take us (kinda like the Baylor game). Still, a lot of NBA talent on that roster plus a bunch of good role players. And they tried to make their schedule as loaded as possible at the start, so you can't really fault them for them for 2021 matchups (though they need to just change conferences already!!). The question is whether they've had to test themselves enough as prep for the gauntlet, which is questionable at best. I like our combo of skill + experience, but I'd be sweating bullets if we get lucky enough to have a matchup with them. Kispert is the ultra-mega-optimized version of the kind of dead-eye shooter that has killed us in the past, and Suggs would probably be the best or 2nd best (Butler) defender Ayo has seen all year. If Kofi can stay out of foul trouble, that is the matchup where we have a definite advantage, and what could be the game changer. Either way that would be a heck of a finale. 🤞 we get to see it.

What are people thinking for our bracket? Plenty of potential storylines, lol. These guys are really clicking at the right time and feeling it, so there is certainly a part of me that says bring on anyone. However, I tend to be a very nervous fan, haha ... so this is what I would prefer, and this all obviously assumes we take care of our own business:

1) Loyola loses to Georgia Tech. For one, I don't want to have any competition (however small) for my fellow Chicagoans' rooting interests, specifically the more casual fans. Also, they will likely be REALLY pumped for that one. Again, we should beat them handily, but I'd just assume avoid it.

2) I REALLY hope Oklahoma State loses before the Sweet Sixteen. I think we're better than them (hell, I am picking us as the National Champ, I think we're better than everybody!!), but I want no part of that team. Even looking past the revenge angle Oklahoma State will be going for because of Underwood, they also feel (rightfully) screwed over by the Committee, and they will have a chip on their shoulder. Additionally, they're one of the few teams who has at least one guard who I feel can REALLY give ours trouble and throw us off our game. No thanks! However, obviously, if it's them ... bring it.

3) I would MUCH rather get a piece of Houston than West Virginia. First of all, I just don't buy that they're going to be able to win their fourth Tournament game in a row vs. a battle-tested 1-seed from this year's Big Ten like us. Second of all, I want nothing more than for the Illini - on a national Elite Eight stage - to absolutely pummel Kelvin Sampson and have the boos rain down on him in front of a partisan Illini crowd.

4) It would obviously be nice to not face Baylor again, but honestly ... Purdue and Ohio State would be just as nerve wracking in the Final Four. OSU is so tough when they're hitting shots, and I did not want to play ONE more second vs. that team, haha. Additionally, Purdue is one of the few teams with centers that can try to contain Kofi effectively, and their (young) team is really coming along. I would love to face the 3-seed Arkansas out of that group. Even though they're hot right now, I just don't think the SEC is going to prepare teams for this gauntlet like the Big Ten and Big XII have.

5) For that Championship Game, if we make it, I don't want the Zags. I can't make up my mind if they're a paper tiger who will fold against elite competition, a team that really IS that good or somewhere in between ... but the way their offense can move, I'd rather just not find out. Part of me can't believe I am saying this, but I would love to face either Iowa or Michigan in the title game. I firmly believe we are better than both, it would be great for an all-Big Ten title game and I think our guys' game that they feel the best playing really punches those two teams in the mouth. After the BTT Semifinal win against Iowa, I honestly would feel the best winning our first NC vs. those bastards! Of course, this would make for a HORRIBLY nervous Fighter of the Nightman, given my friend group hails mostly from Iowa City.

Can't wait to start our journey Friday! No overlooking, just come in, take care of business with energy/focus and move on.
I would LOVE an all B1G final four. THAT would be impressive.

Gonzaga is now getting elite talent, that makes them scary. They've always been extremely well coached, now they've got a lottery pick in Suggs to pull them through any struggles.

They're the front runner for the national title.

I agree they're legit, but it's also hard to extrapolate from early season games because of their conference. We've gotten to see just how much Big Ten teams have improved over the season by being tested against top competition consistently. We haven't seen that for Gonzaga. It's therefore possible that Gonzaga has not kept pace while playing in a cake conference. It's also possible they've also continued improving.

The tournament will show their stripes. I can't wait to find out.

Gonzaga has played exactly 1 (one) team with zero let up, 'punch you in the mouth' defense this season. That was their closest win of the season beating Huggy Bear WVU by 5. They are certainly beatable by a team that can combine that kind of D with an offensive threat. They are without question legit, but they haven't really been challenged much, as mentioned before me.

They won't get challenged much in their bracket either. Maybe OKlahoma, maybe tournament KU revenge game...but they won't see a serious physical team until maybe the Final Four.

Since a lot of people have asked about bracket challenges, I have created the following group if anybody wants to play along. It's public and you should be limited to one bracket that, if I follow correctly, must be submitted before the official start of the tournament on Thursday:

Whether you fill out the bracket in time or not, I have some fun questions, with my answers below.

1) Who do you have in your final four? Why?
2) How far do you have Illinois making it, and, if you don't have them going all the way, who trips them up and why?
3) Will the ghost of Adam Morrison appear dancing on the scoring table while wiping away tears of joy this time if Gonzaga wins? (Oh, who is in your final and who wins it all?)

1) Gonzaga, Michigan (I know), Oklahoma State, and Baylor; edit (I legitimately think these are the four best teams, with the exception of the Illini; one of the top 4 seeds likely won't make it...and I'm guessing it's us.)
2) Sweet 16, upset by OSU. Dominant players make a difference, Baylor is good, and OSU's victory tells me the team is catching fire at the right time.
3) No. Morrison isn't dead, for one. The *actual* Adam Morrison will be there, and he will not cry when his team loses a squeaker to Oklahoma State 88-84.

I hope I'm wrong, but I remember reading this about the 2005 team: "Any team can get picked off in the tournament, but this team is something special." I think this year's team is equally "something special," just have a hunch they will get tripped up by a player who seems ready to go off.

Will the officials let B1G teams play B1G defense, or will they call it close?

Actually its the opposite. WVU has a great offense so they can score with Gonzaga. It's a widely held view that this year WVU's defense is bad.

Gonzaga probably hasn't seen a defense like ours this year.

While their defensive ranking might not be top 20..they are still the most physical, in your face team Gonzaga has played this year.

True but I don't think Gonzaga is a team full of chumps. They don't crawl into a hole because of a little physicality and ball pressure. At least based on the metrics, what they have yet to see is a defense that is both physical and can force you to take tough 2s.

Literally no one has asserted this. Not even close to it.

The B1G officials hardly let our own teams play B1G defense, so I'd say it's just as probable as it's been for the past 3 months.
I've had the impression that, in past tournaments, the officials were even worse. No one is talking about it, hence the question. However, you are correct about B1G officials this year.
How about another question. Will other teams get to foul Kofi 3, 4, or 5 times for every foul called?

I know this isn't a ticket thread but it is a tourny story ... the mad rush for 16/8 tickets is over. Strategy was simple - buy 4 tickets to each of the four Elite 8 games and sell the three non-Illini games once NCAA announces 16/8 game info. By 9:30 had one window open for each game using laptop (my wife) and desktop (me). Adrenaline rush beforehand ... before 10 am you enter lobby. at 10 am you entered queue (it told you how many in front of you), then on your turn you select tickets. On your turn it often tells you someone beat to those seats. When its your turn we just clicked the first seats that came up .... if lucky and get Next, you enter card info. Numerous times it gave us a "processing error - its us not you" and kicked you back to queue. Well punchline is somehow by 10:20 we had succeeded!!! ... only to find out that we had bought three sets of tickets for Mar 29 South Lucas court and one set for Mar 30 North -arghh. We then bought one set for 30 South. We also have one set to sweet 16 May 27 Bankers game 2. Hoping Illini are Mar 29 South.

Gah I sure hope not. That Big Ten Tourney final was ruined (imo) by the officials. And, as you alluded to, its particularly infuriating when they're calling touch fouls half the time but then Ayo (or Kofi) takes a slap to the face and nothing is called. If the NCAA tourney is just as bad...I'll have lost all my hair in two weeks.

Talking about teams from the BT in the tourney I would not count out OSU. If Washington continues to chuck up threes with his eyes close they can also be a tough out. Mich without its Liver are going to be vulnerable. People are talking about how good Loyola is, but they are going to have a tough game with GT. Go Gorgi, Kofi, Ayo, TF, DMW, AC, JG and others. Win the whole shooting match. I just hope Kofi does not get the James Augustine treatment that he received in the final game against UNC.

1) Who do you have in your final four? Why?
Gonzaga, Alabama, Ohio State, Illinois.
I hemmed and hawed about Alabama, but have them beating LSU in the Elite 8. Have LSU beating scUM w/o Livers. Ohio State/Baylor was a toss up too. Figure Young will be back, Liddell won't be nearly as gassed, and Baylor picked up some late season losses.
2) How far do you have Illinois making it, and, if you don't have them going all the way, who trips them up and why?
Natty champs over Alabama, 88-80. Beat anOSU for their 4th meeting on the season in the Final Four
3) Will the ghost of Adam Morrison appear dancing on the scoring table while wiping away tears of joy this time if Gonzaga wins? (Oh, who is in your final and who wins it all?)

Positive test within G.Tech travel party. Asymptomatic. Traveled separately from team. No details on who exactly.

Whoa. Sounds like they probably dodged a bullet. Pastner says that person can’t participate but rest of team good to go for first round.
