Humrichous plays so much because of the money he is making... If you are the big $$ donor(s) who wrote big $$ checks (as in several hundreds of thousands) because Brad told you "We need this guy to compete for titles" and then he sits for 2/3rds of the game, will you be writing checks next year when Brad tells you "We need this guy to compete for titles"? If it was me I would put winning above all else, but there's a reason Brad doesn't come to me for money (I don't have any). Not saying it's right, but it's the reason
I think you’re right. But, if you’re a big donor, are you going to write more checks next year when you ponied up the money for Ben and Ben is out there going 0-8?

I think the smarter move on Brad’s end would be to admit he made a mistake and play the guys that give us the best chance to win. If the team wins, donations will follow.

In every year, pretty much, yes, we've had a seriously good alpha. Being a 2nd-rate alpha doesn't make one a good second option. I don't know what you are arguing.

On top of everything else I said, you can tell even by Mayer's rebounding numbers that the effort just wasn't there.
I misread your comment. Thought it said “this hogging” referring to our general offense. Not “his hogging” referring to previous player MM.

This offense relies too heavily, IMHO, on having a single alpha win one in one situations. But now I see that’s a response to a different comment and not the one you made. :)

I think it’s important to put this team into perspective compared to last year:

Last Year: 16-5 Overall / 7-3 Big 10 / 3-4 Q1 Games

This Year: 14-7 Overall / 6-5 Big 10 / 4-6 Q1 Games

We’re not THAT far off from last year. Yes the vibes were definitely better, but this team has so much more up and down. Hopefully we can go on a little run and get good vibes for March 🤞
[Weird and a little questionable] Username checks out.

Agreed! He is not a great shooter. He is also missed a lot of labs, but I really like his size and bulk when he takes it to the basket. He should be focusing on driving, defense, rebounding, and leadership if he can give it.

You guys are wild 😂 The Postgame thread shouldn’t open for 24 hours after a loss.

Get Tomi back, we’ll be fine. B10 title is gone but we can still beat anybody in the country and get hot in March

Shoutout to Terrence Shannon Jr the only reason Illinois made the Elite 8 last season Terrence was the best player in college basketball last season and he got robbed of his recognition for some off the court lies . Brad is a mediocre coach and Illinois will never win get to a final 4 or win a championship with Brad as the coach. It’s been 8 seasons. It ain’t happening. Brad and Illinois need to move on.

I'm no PJ Carlesimo, but I think I understand basketball. Can someone explain to me what our offense is. We score a lot of points, but all I see is 4 guys standing around the 3 pt line and 1 guy inside. The guy will the ball dribbles around a bit while the other 3 on the perimeter stand perfectly still. I think the defense can't see them if they don't move. Then we either take a contested 3 or swing it around the perimeter until someone decides to shoot a 3. Maybe every once in a while someone will drive to the hoop.

Underwood seems to be convinced, just take a lot of 3s, it doesn't matter if you don't make them. If you get enough shots up, you'll score. Well for decades there was another way. You ran an offense. Players were constantly moving, they were setting screens the were working to get open looks from all 3 levels. Remember how many open shots from 6 ft in James Augustine used to get from actually running an offense? That was great.

It's the NBA and analytics. It's a 2 man game until it's shut down and then you chuck something up. It works well with KJ and Tomi.

When it breaks down, there's nothing. Tonight all it did was break down.

KJ just passed the bus keys into a street drain.

I’m not an insider by any means.

My guess Is that Baby Underwood ain’t going anywhere as long as dad makes the calls. Dad is too stubborn and won’t do Junior like that.

I’m not even sure BU sees the inadequacies and the inexperience of Hamer. Those two have no business being assistant coaches on a B1G bench.

If anything, BU will come to his senses when programs offer OA and GA more money and responsibilities on the bench. Maybe then he will realize he needs experienced assistants on the bench instead of NAIA level coaches (and that may be considered a diss on all current NAIA coaches).

I don't care if it's Brad Underwood, Orlando Antigua, Geoff Alexander, Zach Hamer, Tyler Underwood or Kwa Jones. Whoever is responsible for drawing up and practicing inbound defense and/or side-out inbound offense should be fired tonight and never allowed on the University campus ever again. Maybe NO ONE is responsible. Unbelievably bad coaching. Pathetic, we look like grade schoolers. Additionally, when Illinois goes up against a smothering defense the game is lost. If they don't turn the ball over, they throw up rushed contested 3-point shots. The lack of poise is embarrassing. 17 turnovers? 10 for 42 3-pointers? A final four team? SMH. BTW who the heck is Kwa Jones? Been watching and rooting for Illinois basketball teams since 1966. Never seen a team of weaker character than this team. They completely disappear in overtime.

Nobody will listen bc I’m not an “insider” but enough! Brad has brought a WINNING program here. Ben has been a miss so far. He might turn it around or he might not. Brad took an educated guess at him. All you can do in this era. These “know it all’s” seem to know which guy will fit and which one won’t. Then why aren’t they coaching at a high level D-1 program? It’s a crap shoot at this point with strategic guesses. Flat out. This teams ceiling is crazy. It might flame out(odds say it will) but it might make a run. Jesus Christ, let Brad figure it out and determine if it was a good gamble or not!?
Yeah, why aren't several hundreds of people all coaching 352 teams. Come on, man. That one doesn't really fly. That's what fans do, they talk about how their team can be better. Especially after a game like that, following Maryland and the NW second half. This reaction is pretty predictable. Hopefully Brad can figure it out, but it ain't looking good going into February.

The "better team," the Illini, were completely out-played and OUT-COACHED the final 25 seconds of regulation and could not get a whiff of the rim to win the game. Nebby completely dictated the end of the game and overtime while the Illini looked completely helpless. Sit Ben H. Play DGL. LIMIT THE TURNOVERS, CASUAL BALL HANDLING, and EXCESSIVE 3'S. They are losing games for you. Fire assi. coach Hamer and demote 1st son Tyler.

To Coach Underwood: Get some brass b---s and shake up the team and staff to let everyone know winning is good and losing is bad. They are players and YOU are the coach. Please start doing your job!!!!!!

I agree with whoever said time to reset my expectations. I don't think the season is lost but I don't think we will surpass last year's if the current trajectory continues. However I do feel underwood always has had an atrocious loss where it gets him energized and we see a nice run arise from it. Am I being too hopeful
Why does the head coach have to get re-energized in the middle of the season? I am not disagreeing with your point. But I do not understand that type of coaching mentality.

BH Is getting a ton of hate right now & deservedly so. I've defended him quite a bit b/c I think some of it was overblown. Tonight...he deserves everything coming his way. Just awful in every possible way. Having said that, he was far from the only one to blame. Let's not forget:

* Brad Underwood got MASSIVELY outcoached by FRED FREAKING HOIBERG who is about to get fired after this season. Go back and watch...he got outcoached as bad as any game I've seen in a really really long time. BU was TERRIBLE tonight. He's getting paid a crap load of money...he's gotta be better.

* One of the worst defensive performances I can remember. So many missed assignments, bad position, etc. Boswell & White aren't giving you hardly anything on offense (except turnovers), they better be playing better D. You want to talk about bad investments? Boswell should be at the top of that list.

* KJ is such an enigma at times. He can be fabulous, best guy on the court. And then have some of the most ridiculous, dumb turnovers imaginable. You cannot have that from you best player nearly every game and expect to be a championship contender.

It's January. With or without Tomi, this team is what it is. What an absolutely frustrating season.
