What college football do you guys watch other than the big 10? Although on one hand I hate the smugness of the SEC, I do highly prefer watching them vs. other conferences (non big 10) because it feel like I am watching “tradition”, kinda like when watching premier league soccer.

I watch very little outside B10 beyond the high profile non-conference games. I wouldn‘t watch an SEC or any other conference game except for high profile rivalries from the start but would turn it on if it’s late and close and looking like a good game.

I prefer to watch Big 10 games just to watch something.

I'll watch ND/USC, and other high-profile SEC or ACC games. But, I don't watch Auburn vs. Mississippi State just because it's on.

Outside of B1G, I'll watch Iowa State (my wife's cousins went there), general Big 12, Texas A&M (family friend's kid goes there now), Florida (family friend went there), Notre Dame (if nothing else is on), and whatever high profile game looks good. I generally watch the Pac-12 and ACC before SEC.

I’ve learned we can’t really compare numbers from different articles because there are multiple income sources and some passively include estimates of CFP money as an example. Also, the TV rights packages is separate from BTN or SEC network profit distributions.

The SEC may recover some of the gap via other revenue streams but B1G schools getting average $72M / year each while SEC teams getting average $50M / year each for TV rights. That’s a huge difference.

Ryan Day said it will take $13 million of NIL money to keep the OSU roster intact. That $22 million difference is huge in the NIL era. So as far as recruiting is concerned B1G positioned to pay more in NIL, and have more TV visibility. I think regional access to recruits will diminish during the coarse of these deals. I also think this is why the B1G is supportive paying players directly - they have the financial advantage, and being able to pay players directly would increase the benefit of that advantage.

B1G will get to renegotiate 3 years sooner so that gap may significantly increase for the final 3 years of SEC deal AND B1G has opportunity to lock in the best network slots prior to SEC even having an opportunity. The B1G is now in a position of power to passively dictate the terms of SECs next deal, and options available to them. ESPN is in a tough spot financially. Disney may sell them off before the end of the SEC deal. On multiple fronts it seems like the B1G just owned the SEC strategically with this deal.

I'm sure it all drains into the same coffers and I'm under no illusions that the letters of the law will or even should be followed but it's my understanding none of this money is to be allotted for NIL compensation.

If this is correct (which I believe it to be), NIL cannot come from or via the universities.

While universities and athletic conferences will remain forbidden from paying student-athletes for their athletic performances, student-athletes can now sign endorsement deals and profit from advertising and marketing campaigns for third-parties.

Really. Because you don’t like the SEC? maybe me being in the south has affected me.

I'd expect the easiest way to compare is to look at the per school distributions.

B1G. Any SEC game not involving Missouri. Kentucky or Vanderbilt. Little to no interest in ACC, Big 12 or PAC. NO interest in ND.

I like watching contenders for the playoff playing other good teams (ranked or near-ranked). Doesn't matter too much the conference. ND/tOSU is a must-watch for me this year. Unfortunately, that skews heavily to the SEC.

I went to the 96 Olympics when the US hosted it in Atlanta. I remember DURING the Olympics, most of the sports talk radio around Atlanta was talking about how the SEC football practices were going. That level of fanaticism has only grown. When they say SEC football is a religion, they're not kidding.

I watch the SEC games because those dudes are FAST. The depth of high level base athleticism in the south compared to the north is a real thing. And football is more a part of the culture, so I like to see people that are really into their thing. (I love watching basketball games on tv at Duke because I love the passion their fans bring, it’s part of their culture too).

After watching the 11am big ten games and changing to that 2:30 sec game, the difference in athleticism is immediately apparent. Big Ten guys look like they run in sludge compared to SEC guys. I love big ten games, the history, the rivalries, the beautiful campuses, the fact that the leaves actually change colors in our current footprint, but as annoying as the SEC is, they’re the best, so they can talk their trash.

Good summary amd I concur!

I'll watch some of the bigger games in the other conferences but I won't watch some random ACC or SEC or Big XII or Pac-12 game against two middle to bottom of the standing teams. I will watch EIU games every week but that's also because I'm an alumnus (though the last 3 years with Adam Cushing in charge were an absolute SLOG to get through).

My ideal Saturday is an Illini bye week in which I'm flipping between every game that's on from 11AM to Midnight. My former roommate and I used to get a giant kebab platter with all the fixins (probably for something like 10 people) and just pig out all day. Heaven.

But I was a fan of those 2:30 SEC games with Verne Lundquist back when the SEC stunk. "It Just Means More" is the perfect marketing tagline for that conference.

does anyone know what the ultimate end game is for B1G football & basketball programs & players ?

will star players be making mid-six figures ?
That's not the end game, that's next week.

End game-wise we're hurtling toward full professionalization at breakneck speed. But that gets complicated in a million ways.

I’d expect a strong push on this in the next few years. Everything is changing.

I would assume at least two Big Ten games are on FS1 on a given Saturday, but yeah, I think you've about got it.

And the nature of the BTN is that it can do regional coverage with multiple games at once as is common during those cupcake weeks in the early season.

Once upon a time those were all at 11AM but they have done regional coverage in the 2:30 slot in recent years.

BTN night games are also not unheard-of.

The message got to the league office that every week 11AM football was killing ticket sales for its weaker Central Time teams, they've taken steps to address that. I don't see why there would be backsliding on that, I hope not.

I have no freakin' idea how they handle USC and UCLA though. Making them play at 9AM PT, even on the road, is just going to be such a hardship. But FOX is going to want USC-OSU and USC-Michigan in their 11AM slot. I guess we'll find out when we get there.
From what I read Fox does not always get the choice of game in a week. Basically it sounds like they get to pick which weeks they want first pick. As such they are going to always take the last week of the season because OSU-MICH is always going to be in that week and the viewership for that game is bonkers. I doubt USC-OSU, MICH-OSU get set weeks in the schedule so FOX won't be able to guarantee getting those games. This is how the B1G was able to get such a high value out of CBS and NBC. Those games are not going to be second and third tier games many weeks.

Do they just pick the weeks one time and that's how it is every season, regardless of schedule? Or do they get to re-pick their weeks every season, after the schedule comes out?

I didn't see anything real specific but it sure sounded like the week picks would be before a schedule was set hence the reason for always taking the last week because of OSU-MICH being protected to that week every year.

I’d expect a strong push on this in the next few years. Everything is changing.

I'd expect that too, but it's interesting because in one sense players and schools have a quasi employer-employee relationship, but in another sense NIL has made the two competitors for fan dollars. And then of course there's the education aspect.

The elite revenue sport athlete is uniquely positioned. You can see some ways in which they'd be advantaged by making use of labor law generated from the struggle of 20th century steelworkers, but other ways in which they might be disadvantaged. It's a tough to read landscape, I don't envy these kids in a lot of ways.

But it's better than it was, I'm glad these kids are reaping some of their economic value now at least.

Do they just pick the weeks one time and that's how it is every season, regardless of schedule? Or do they get to re-pick their weeks every season, after the schedule comes out?
The way the network exec quoted described it was "quite complicated".

The top three games will be on the network tripleheader starting in 2024 when the SEC is gone from CBS and the LA teams have joined the B1G, that much we know.
