New Postseason Tournament Being Discussed

#2
Hoo boy, getting to watch under .500 teams play in the postseason. Where do I sign up? I get this is an attempt at a money grab, but I can't imagine a whole lot of people paying to watch this.

The most hilarious thing about this though is that only 15 teams didn't make the tournament last year from those 3 conferences, so they wouldn't even be able to field the necessary 16 teams in some years.

This is the first baby step to start a new tourney and bypass/leave the NCAA eventually.

"Discussions are ongoing, but the current vision is for the event to include 16 teams that would play at T-Mobile Arena during the final week of March following the NCAA tournament’s Elite Eight games. If the tournament happens, Fox plans to encourage its corporate partners to set up Name, Image and Likeness deals for players who are competing; the network will not be able to pay players directly due to NCAA rules.
Under terms of the proposed arrangement, the top 16 teams in the Big 12, Big East and Big Ten that did not qualify for the NCAA tournament — as ranked by the NET — would be required to play in the Fox event even if they are invited to the NIT. Those three leagues have rights deals with Fox. The network also has a rights agreement with the Pac-12, but it is unclear whether that league would be added due to complications arising from the Pac-12’s impending realignment defections."

why in the world would I want to watch a tournament with teams that weren't even good enough to make the tournament instead of the Final 4?

yep -- garbage.

Please leave the NCAA tournament alone. Top college and professional post-season tournaments I personally enjoy most, in ranked order:

1. NCAA Men's basketball tourney
2. NCAA 12-team Football Playoff (I'm speculating)
3. MLB Playoffs
4. NCAA Men's Golf Championship (as long as we keep excelling)
5. NFL Playoffs (this one might get moved up if the Bears can ever start winning again)

Please tinker with only all the other sports that I don't watch.

This keeps getting better and better. What a great palate cleanser to the ncaa tourney to not only showcase must see tv matchups like 10-23 Depaul vs. 9-22 Minnesota, but also having these teams coming off a 3 week hiatus from their last played game with limited practices in between.

But that's not all, folks. Because guess what? The transfer portal is also open during this time period! So many of the more talented players on these teams will have already left for locations where the grass is greener.

Nothing says quality basketball like 10win teams fielding half their roster after a 3 week layoff played in a near-empty gym. Brilliant concept.

When you absolutely must milk every last penny out of college sports. Even as a sicko that spends their time on a college sports message board, there is absolutely no shot I'd watch this. But hey, I'm sure plenty of degenerates won't be able to help themselves from betting on these hideous games. I feel for the college athletes who would be expected to play in this money-grab.

Seems like getting sponsorship and advertising revenue at a most conspicuous time in the overall sports byline would be somewhat difficult to achieve , but as you professed , there are enough peeps that would see a happenstance for monetary advancement......

Once again , the basic premise that $$$$ has taken control of the sports and sports betting arena is alive and well.......

I , as you also professed , will not be watching as we have enough going on then with the Stanley Cup and the rest of men's and women's BB.....

Anyone else think this is a test case to see how a P5 only postseason would run? Even a hint of tangible success will be all FOX/ESPN need to try and lure the biggest remaining conferences away from NCAA tournament and the small schools (which make the tournament great) will be left on the outside looking in.
