Roundball Sage: “Kansas City will be NFL Champs, again. No reason to bother even playing ‘The Big Game!’ It’s a done deal. Why? NFL loves the huge crossover interest from Taylor Swift and her millions of Swifties. NFL loves publicity and expanding the NFL footprint and making even more money. Especially the money part.
And so, Chiefs can NOT be allowed to lose, ‘The Big Game!’. You’ve got to have the storybook ending and Swift and Company get their big victory on the Worldwide stage. And the big Hollywood climax photo shot of Swift planting a Great Big Fat One at the end of the game on the lips of the already-over-media-exposed KC Tight End. You simply cannot disappoint all those Swift fans and suffer the big backlash you would get from that. And remember the directive.. Expand The Footprint. Female Demographic. Non-NFL fans. Onward and upward.
They’ll maybe make the game close to keep viewers glued to the tube. Why? You gotta satisfy all those advertisers who are paying filthy amounts of money to put their Influencers in front of tens of millions of pairs of eyes and ready to be influenced.”

Or, and I'm just spitballing here, Kansas City was the better team.
Against my better judgment I will engage with this. Do you think the entire 49ers team was on board with this? The officiating certainly didn’t seem influential.
Without going into a long history about this...
The National Football League is widely-considered “Sports Entertainment” and not some kind of repository of pure athletic competition.
Even some NFL players have been quoted about this. Former Buccaneers player Dwight Smith has said that NFL games are “more entertainment than actual competition”. He has stated: “I don’t believe the game is really decided on the field.”
And while most people around the League will always, ‘Protect The Shield!’ at all costs (the big river of MONEY...) Smith is not the only player to make such statements.
I could see the outcome of this year’s game a mile away. The clues were all there for weeks.
Look, anyone who likes this kind of thing is fine. We all make our choices. But we need to have our eyes open, too.
Does anyone honestly think that KC was ever going to lose this game? Not a chance. They may in fact be the better team anyway. But regardless, they were NOT going to be losers. Top much riding on it for too many people.

They played neck and neck. It was lax coverage in OT that let KC slip through for the winning score.
Overall, it was a decent game. Not a beat down but not a dud, either. Far from the worst Super Bowl I've ever sat through
Unless I missed it, when did the NFL come to be on the same level as pro wrestling, which is actually sports entertainment compared to what the NFL is?

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it really was all guided/scripted entertainment to maximize profits. Not that I believe it, or really care, just that if Goodell came out on live television today and said “We are basically pro wrestling, and it’s all scripted for your entertainment” I’d simply say, “Huh, interesting” and go about my day.
My only heartburn though, like truly my ONLY beef with that scenario is why in the hell have the Bears not gotten their redemption story yet??
What producer did they piss off to get such a lousy part to play in this narrative?!

Virginia wouldn't play ball
As football fans, what fans see is the City name and the franchise name and they think of their personal connection to ‘their’ team.
But what the League really is... a collection of owners and owners groups with a limited number of franchise seats at the table. And within any group there are favored people and groups and others who are not in such favor.
The Bears haven’t had a powerful or influential seat at that table since The Old Man has been gone – a long time now. They just don’t hold sway at that big table.
There is no current narrative (yet) where the Bears would be held in such favor. BUT... there is one on the horizon: Once the new Bears stadium site gains traction... there will be a push to reward the City with a Super Bowl and to build momentum for public support for a stadium there will be things behind the scenes happening to help the Bears.
THAT’s when Bear fans are going to see things on and off the field they’ve been waiting for. Again... the signs are right there.
The executives at Draft Kings thank you for your integrity as they carry out the Lords work. Not sure they would have survived. They are only generating about 3 billion in annual revenue.
You should tell Roger Goodell that the Cowboys built a new stadium in 2009. If the Bears build a new stadium in 2027 should we be looking for some results in 2045 or so?
That plays into the overall League operational scenario I laid out. This League's scenarios are personality-based and franchise-specific. The Cowboys owner is NOT a universally-liked man in that Club. So the Cowboys have not been rewarded with championships for many years. They are just good enough to be in the mix to keep Cowboy Nation a bit quieted. Despite all his personal wealth and the value of a 'most valuable' franchise... that does not buy popularity in the right crowd. And to get anywhere in the NFL... you must be popular with the right people.
All the NFL owners are making so-so-so much money now that having a winning franchise is just a side benefit any more. It's a fascinating business to witness how and why they do things. And the interest of fans is not anywhere near the top of the list of owners concerns. What is? "Expand The Footprint!' That's why more games are coming to foreign countries in the future.
I wonder what Dick Butkus’ reaction was when they told him throw a game. Wait, let me guess……
The Butkus era was the later stages of when the NFL was just about football. It was all football until the late Sixties. But once the Super Bowl era started and especially after the Jets upset over Baltimore and the Chiefs first Super Bowl win in the Len Dawson era... that's when things began to get real interesting in the 'Back Room' with the League promoters. With each passing year, it has become more and more entertainment.
And there are still players today of course who aren't down with this. And not everyone cares to 'know'. But the salaries are through the roof and the top-down interest is not the same anyway with each and every game. The higher the profile game... the more 'interest from above'. For two losing teams in the regular season, they don't really care that much... unless They are starting to build up a narrative of some kind.
