Another year to prove himself I guess but doesn’t that number seem low even for a backup and/or third string QB? I don’t follow this stuff so honestly don’t know.

I don't follow it either, but it sounds more than like an option contract for his rights than an outright contract to perform. Someone more knowledgeable can educate us both.

Is Tommy the QB referenced in the final highlight, or are they instead saying that some other QB already exists and that they have exclusive rights to Tommy as a second, if they choose to exercise those rights?

Got curious enough to look it up.

Basically an ERFA contract is for newbies that have expired contracts but also like 2 or fewer years in the NFL. if extended, the team pays the player the minimum salary and the player has no option to leave. It’s play or don’t play. It’s a special contract / rule for newer players. There are other rules/ nuances but it’s explained in this article:
