Northwestern 72, Illinois 68 OT POSTGAME

#151
Allstate Arena was barely two-thirds full, if even that. More than half were Illini fans. The Mildcats are going to be playing in front of a lot of empty seats this season.

Announced attendance was 10,017. Tickets were $35 each plus parking @ $15/$20 kept attendance down. NW needs to lower the price of a ticket to $8 like at SFC to get the attendance up. Plus aren't we giving away some free student tickets now? I doubt we will have 10,000 Sunday night.

Kipper, Jordan, and Finke are our trusted 3-point shooters. They should get close to 30mins each.

If we do not have frontcourt depth and cannot shoot 3s, we are not going to win tough games. Coaching cannot change that.

I must be watching a different game. You don't gain minutes just because you make 3s. If anything Ive been disappointed with kippers play. Too many turnovers, forced shots, and some offensive breakdowns. I like his hustle, but just don't see him getting 30min.

Agree, I have not been impressed with Kipper these past two games. Hustle yes, but I don't see him as a creator, as he appears to, nor a terrific three pointer shooter.

Let's hope it's just a minor slump.

We used Kipper as a post player and ask Kipper to break the zone, which obviously is not his strength.

If his role is to knock down some open 3s and focus on defense, he will excel.

We have playmakers (TJL and Smith and Finke to some extent) and post threats (LB). We just need someone to cash from the 3 point chances that created by them. We use Kipper too much out of his comfort zone.

Okay, how about some positives.

-Alstork showed himself to be a gutty veteran who knows how to play big boy basketball.
-TeJon's offensive explosion was a revelation, something we haven't seen from an Illini pg in forever.
-AJ is still hitting shots as the lights brighten, just needs the ball more.
-Damonte is a plus defender, rare for a true freshman.
-Leron is a consistent near double/double guy, and no longer a foul machine.
-We do one or two more things right, according to the Underwood way, and we win that game.
-NW is veteran players running the same system learned from the day they arrived on campus, we're a team of five freshmen just scratching the surface with a brand new coach and system, and yet we almost, and should have, won.

There is no way you can say Smith is not the best player on this team and putting him on the bench kills what small offensive threats we have already and TJL made some shoots but if you are telling me that TeJon and DW are going to take this team and win games in the B10 ... you are entitled to your opinion but that comment is comical

HUH?

Maybe you mean most talented? but he hasnt been the best player in terms of performance by a long shot, especially the last 3 games.

On M. Smith....it just doesnt matter. He will be good for us. We have alot of development and learning ahead of us...including M Smith

I know this may sound crazy to most.. but I would like to see Alstork run the point when Tejon is not in the game. He is a much better player offensively when he has the ball in his hands more. I think we seen that tonight!

Not crazy, I suggested this game 4. He seems to be more active and can pass it well when he has the ball in his hands. Smith seems more like a 2 at this point

First game I was able to watch on TV.

- Not impressed with NW at all. They'll end up in bottom half of conference standings. It's a game we should have won.

- Too much dribblings and not enough quick passes. Pull out a tape from the 04/05 season.

- Didn't see much up tempo play for the most part.

- Guess they'll play BU style once he recruits his players.

- Disappointing loss considering caliber of the opponent.

So was at the game and in the rowdy section of 116. We missed opportunities but the refs cost us like 6-10points. A few and ones that were changed to charges and the offensive foul that wasn't right before regulation.

That aside, the travels by our big guys kill us and Finke's failure to flash in the zone. He needs to be the one to do it because once he gets it the defense collapses he kicks out and then rotates out for an open jumper unless his pass leads to a score. I feel though as the season goes on the fouls and turnovers will come down as they start to figure this out.

Disappointing to lose this game but in big picture it is progress. Losses will happen because we are an average basketball team this year. We will also have some unexpected wins along the way. What is transpiring in front of us is a culture being created. I have seen it in each games to some degree. I feel this team is developing an identity of toughness, which I have not seen in several years. I am seeing an emphasis on defense and an uptempo offense. This is what we were promised when he came to U of I. As long as we continue to see BU’s footprint growing during the season, it will be a win for us. Just have to recruit at a higher level and the results will come.

We ran a bunch of new stuff vs NW. even though we lost im pleased with what I’ve seen. We have the look of a team that’s gonna come together and peak late. Hopefully it’s enough to dance.

We ran a high post entry action I haven’t seen before, ever. Immediately adding this one to the personal playbook. Mark Smith traveled but was open to attack with proper execution.

Ran a set for the second cutter to get a double screen look for a 3.

Ran a secondary set with similar action to a spread set we’ve been running since day 1.

All in the first 5 plays of the game.

We initiated offense straight to the 2 man game with an extra flare screen for the pinch posy guy to receive a kick out 3. New one for me to see too.

Ran a counter for our dribble entry and a post isolation for Leron as the first cutter.

We ran so much new stuff I had to start writing stuff down.

Other observations: for the second game in a row we had were up by around 8, low 20s to high teens, and had a chance to step on a team’s throat, extend the lead and put the game away early. We didn’t do it. We really need to capitalize on those opportunities.

Pretty much the same two observations from last game...

1) We are extremely thin upfront at 4/5. I know... positionless this and positionless that, but we simply do not have enough in the frontcourt. As much as fans think we can find diamonds in the rough late, reality is that if you end up scrabbling late for size/talent, what you end up with may not be up to par. That is especially true for big men who take longer to develop. Unfortunately, this looks like a problem for next year as well.

2) Unless we upgrade overall talent, the bar will remain on just making the tournament every single year. I know the popular belief around here that talent has not been the problem, yada, yada, yada... with good coaching etc., etc., etc. but to consistently win and compete in the B1G we need a serious upgrade beyond talent levels in the last 12 years (with the lone exception of 2010-11).

On 2) Ayo says, "Yep"

I dont disagree with that, but we hired a guy for $$$$$$ and he's on game #8

I'll give it a bit longer.

On the contrary, not giving up on the season. Just believe that people who claim that this season does not really matter and we are just building for the future have already given up on the season. Winning (and losing) this season does matter.

I am on board with you and feel winning is important this year. Realistically we are an 18-19 game winning team. If we outplay our talent we get in. If you don’t win you don’t get the Ayo talent in future. To be consistenty relevant, we need to land an Ayo talent every 3 out of 5 years. We also need to land a Leron Black level player 4 out of 5 years and a Egwu talent every 3 years. If you don’t win and showcase your style, that wishlist becomes impossible

I saw a LOT of things to love Friday night, and some things that have to be worked on.

LOVE
Tempo--sure, these guys aren't there yet, and legs got tired in the second half, but this kids looked pretty comfortable pushing the ball against the man defense.

Transition--goes with tempo a lot, but these kids attack after a defensive rebound.

Passing--The box score only shows 8 assists, but there were some possessions where the ball was moving very well. Not 04-05 well, but better than we've seen quite a while

Team play--I can't think of a single play where I thought "Hero Ball"

Alstork--For all the hype about Mark "going to get his points" (I was kind of worried about Ray Rice 2.0), this guy was doing the little things to help make plays. Tough D, 6 boards, 2 steals, and he got his 14.

Jordan--Every game this kid comes through in a different way. KenPom has him with the 5th highest ORating among all players (not filtered for minimum possessions)--Right behind Jalen Brunson.

Needs work--
Captain obvious says the offense against the zone. I'm not a great X/O guy, but there's got to be a better way to attack the zone that what we showed the other night. This one's on the coaching staff, and if they don't get it sorted we're going to struggle.

Free throws--Sure, they shot 80%, but TJL's misses were pretty critical, and at a critical point of the game.
3 point shooting--16.7%. Oh boy. Not going to beat Rutgers shooting like that.

Leron--Don't get me wrong, I love the energy the guy plays with, but sometimes...just dumb stuff. Even if he didn't start the jawing that led to the double-T, just walk away. And if he did start it, that's harmful to the team because his rep isn't going to get him any slack with the refs.

tl;dr--even with the loss, I think we're trending up. I think NU's a better team than a lot of people are giving them credit for, but I'll also agree that this game was Illinois' to win, but they couldn't solve the zone.

All good points but I still believe if Smith is in the lineup at the end of this game we win the game.

BU never gave Smith another chance to mend missing the rotation on the backdoor lav and that is not fair if you want to take about being a teacher for your layers and building their confidence. NW was not a better team than the Illini but to each their own.....Smith is an impact player but the cream always rises to the top and in the end Smith will be Smith...
