you either have a culture that

a. encourages sophmoric hazing and players acting like muscled up 14 year olds
or
b. discourages and even prevents such activity

its just about impossible to be just neutral on this, as a coach and staff that is

as someone else earlier said, pretending to be ignorant of it is just as damning of your overall control of the program as promoting it is

Agreed. Ignorance isn’t an excuse when it’s your job to know.

He‘s either complicit, indifferent, or incompetent.

Fitz just has to survive a few news cycles, wait for someone else to do something dumb or something big to happen. It worked for Juwan Howard, who literally slapped a opposing coach on TV.

Huggins dropped the other f bomb on a radio show and got off with a $1M salary reduction until he got caught with a DUI which was probably pretty convenient for WVU.
This is a much more like a Ped State deal. Not quite, but close. Bigger deal than a slap or DUI (where there was no injuries or worse).

yeah I was wondering what kind of person would enjoy watching these scenarios....yeah this is different
Initiation rituals always devolve into hazing if they are allowed to go on for any length of time. The sadists always work their way up the ladder to be the initiators to the initiated. Things always go down from there.

there is a real good chance this issue at NW cripples them for years just as the slush fund issue in 1966-1967 did with us for years afterwards

the odds of them being able to successfully get through this with or without Fitz and/or a new coach are about 500-1 against

Agree 100%! For players to think Fitz signaled or condoned it says a lot.

I disagree completely. West Virginia and Michigan do not have the Chicago media breathing down their throats. This is not going away anytime soon, especially for a school who claims to be "Chicago's B1G team".

I remember the Beckman allegations through Chicago sports radio, and it was nonstop until he was removed (and even then the criticism of the Illini program were continued). Yes, I know 670 the Score, etc. hate the Illini, but I have little doubt that this will remain in the spotlight. In today's world, the allegations in the report will not go away. This is way worse than an "f" bomb or weak slap. Fitz is in some serious hot water, and rightfully so.

There is no way the rest of the university, who probably don't even remember they have a football team 99% of the time, are going to tolerate this kind of negative publicity IMO. This kind of thing reflects poorly on the whole school, and turns off people like my youngest sister who is a rising HS senior. Fitz had a great run but his teams haven't been good lately anyways. At best he fell asleep behind the wheel, and at worst he endorsed bullying teenagers.

Who would tolerate this culture of abuse just to go 1-11?

No way these allegations are real. Have you ever heard of details like this in a hazing incident before? The details are usually kept under wraps and the masses are left wondering what really happened.

I do have to give it to them though, the creativity to come up with "naked carwash" and "naked slingshot" are hilarious concepts, lol. It's like someone who was a disgruntled player had a brainstorming with their sick friends on what ridiculous things they could make up about the football team to get them in trouble. If this was an Onion article we'd all be laughing about this instead of being outraged.

Of course if this is true, it proves the point that real life is stranger than fiction

After seeing more come out today, Fitz won't come back from this. I am jumping to the other side of the fence.

I can tell you right now that a number of people from the Illinois program back in the early 2010s thought Simon Cvijanovic was full of it when he made his allegations. Turns out he was right on the money.

If someone is given full anonymity to speak out, and that is corroborated by other players, I don't see why you would think this is made up, especially if you have ever been a part of a football program. There are some cult-like ways that a group of 100+ get into, and they can get very extreme in retrospect.

if you promise anonymity to players / former players , and you can get a bunch to corroborate each other , you can get a pretty good idea of the truth .

this isn’t a court of law

this is the real life business world

Here’s some that are worse…
(But that might not be the case as more info comes out)

Here are several that involved……broomsticks? wth?! 🤢
(Yes,it’s HS but that makes little difference.) So sick. If 3 separate HS did this. I think it is entirely possible that “Naked Carwash “could of def. been a real thing. I’m not gonna dismiss it because it merely sounds crazy/eleborate.
It is certainly not beyond the realm of believability/possibility.

Houston, I think we have a problem.

"In determining an appropriate penalty for the head coach, I focused too much on what the report concluded he didn't know and not enough on what he should have known," Schill wrote. "As the head coach of one of our athletics programs, coach Fitzgerald is not only responsible for what happens within the program but also must take great care to uphold our institutional commitment to the student experience. ... Clearly, he failed to uphold that commitment, and I failed to sufficiently consider that failure in levying a sanction."
