Ohio State 87, Illinois 81 Postgame

Guys, I am an optimist to my CORE. I will be right back on Tuesday talking about how a win vs. Penn State could get us on a nice little winning streak. With that said... How could there even be ONE poster left making excuses?! Losing like we lost today is infinitely more frustrating than just losing by 10. Someone in the game thread said that last year's team was better than this year's, and it wasn't close; I am going to have to agree. While I knew that last year's squad was unlikely to blow out Minnesota or Nebraska or Northwestern at home, I also knew that they were rock solid and tough - it would be rare that they didn't come out with pride and effort. To let these huge leads grow on us is M-E-N-T-A-L. I am sick of hearing about some guy having a career day and how BU can't make FTs for our guys or whatever other excuse there is. You can explain away anything in a relatively close loss if you want to, but it takes someone in denial to not see the trends. If we lose to Penn State, any hope of a top four seed and a serious Tournament run just might be over. And ~making the Tournament~ or ~being ranked~ or any other "achievement" that might have seen elusive last year is simply NOT GOOD ENOUGH for this year's team. Period. Such a disappointing game.

Sure the refs missed some calls. That’s not why were down 18. Take care of business. Period.
Those calls matter in a conference where the games will be close. The refs have a job to do and they need to do it you take bake the free throws from them and give them to us we win.

I think we will drop out of the rankings on monday.. I think that will light a fire under us.. 2 back to back losses at home..

It’s BS. Yeah we hurt ourselves early and got down but battled back and out ourselves in a position to win. Refs made sure we had no chance and pay gets to laugh at us as we leave the court.

I’m telling you watch this Larry S guy. He’s always been awful for us. Never forgot when he got in John Groces face and looked like a fool. Paid attention to him since and he’s awful against us.

I’m sorry. Underwood needs to get a huge fine. Way too many missed calls at home at the end of this game. WAY TOO MANY.
Yeah but hit some free throws and guard somebody in the first half - may have mitigated this.

No question we deserved to loose. But that ending was terrible. No question contact above the neck on Miller. And who ever said play is over after first call - wrong that would mean dead ball fouls are not allowed.

that was clearly a travel on the baseline, HS officials get that call let alone the crappy Big officials.

but let’s top it off by missing the out of bounds call. If I am Underwood I go off on the officials in the post game take the fine and rip them for the terrible job they did at the end of that game.

We made the plays down the stretch that should have give us an opportunity to absolutely steal a win, officials were just plain bad down the stretch not giving the chance. That said, have to figure out the first half shooting woes.

This loss is not on the refs. Missed free throws in the first half and an inability to convert on their turnovers lost this game.

We didn’t deserve this one
Yea, the better team today won. It would have been nice to have a "W" after that game, but I would have felt that we won by a fluke.

Last years team is better because they had a chip on their shoulder. This team looks like a team that’s being hunted.

We are a good team! We are not a great team. We still have time to develop into a great team. I think this team will improve. Considering what people have endured over the last year, I am enjoying all of these games...even the heartbreaking losses.

Those were some bad calls. I wonder if some subconscious sense of justice prevailed, seeing as we got outplayed all game. I'd have taken the win, but if we'd pulled it out I don't think it would have been deserved.

Remember last season when the coaches would urge on the team in timeouts with, "Nobody's tougher than us!"? They probably don't even think about saying it this year because this team is S O F T.

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Rantoul waiting to finish in the middle of the pack in the B1G.

It would have helped and I’m not arguing we are good on defense or the feee throws are ok. Hell we might even miss the three we needed to still win the game. But, these games are bet on and mean so much money to the school. There’s no reason that !!!! should happen. The travel and the out of bounds are just blatant you aren’t winning this game calls.

This team is at best a 2nd tier B1G team. Forget about winning the conference or getting a high seed. 12-8 in the B1G might be about right.
Maybe. Remember, the Indiana and Purdue games were close, and we were down big to NW. There are no guarantees we get 12.

Refs make bad calls. Just part of the game. Going down 18, missing free throws the refs do give, Kofi being a detriment at times in games(turnover and foul shooting), lack of consistent perimeter shooting and lack of reliable bench support are the issues. These have all been the common denominator in our losses. I think that we need to take the expectation level down. That's probably first and foremost.

Sad that Kofi can get hacked and no call. Adam gets hit with shoulder in the face tthey call AD on the foul. I don’t understand Ayo with a such a slow start. Liddel killed us.

Check the schedule over the next 6 games. Looks like it will be tough to be above .500 during that stretch. That would give us 6 loses, playing .500. We should have not lost the last 2 games on our home court. We finish 6 to 8 in the BIG this year. I am really disappointed with this team with 2 "supposed" draft picks on the team and 2 senior starters. I believe we should have played much better.

You are 100% right. I think we will win some games just based on talent, but maybe I'm deluding myself. The last 2 games show talent alone is not enough. If you'd said at the start of this season we might not get to 12, nobody would have believed it.

Time for BU to prove if he’s an elite coach or just a good coach. Way too much talent to be down double digits in what feels like every game now.
