Any decent spin we could tell ourselves seems to be out the window, unfortunately. Considering where we seem to be in the AC search, I'd guess we aren't offering anywhere close to the money rumored.
There are lots of opportunities for additional compensation outside of the salary. The money swirling around the UK program is crazy. I didn’t think we were going to outbid UK but I am pretty sure we brought a good offer to the table. You will never convince me that Orlando took less money to go to UK. No way.

Unless there's some restriction against how assistant coaches are paid that I'm missing, there's no need for "under the table" type compensation. UK can pay whatever they want, it can even be 100% donated by boosters, and it'd be completely above board. So OA is getting paid an average of $875k for 3 years at UK. That is it. That's less than what it's reported in the media we offered, so unless those reports were wrong (and they could very well be), he did in fact take less to go to UK.

there are other reasons to get creative with pay. Taxes being one of them (make it non-cash perks). Or deflate the headline number in case other assistants (at kentucky and otherwise) bogey themselves off a lower number. Not saying any of that happened here, and there are obvious limits on how much of that you can do, just saying NCAA rules are not the only thing that would matter.

either way, the supposed fact that OA won't even be the highest paid assistant in KU's recent history (at least the first couple of years) is a bit disheartening. As you say, either Illinois wasn't able to step up to where the big boys have already been for a while, OA took a lower priced offer (or got more perks), or, a third scenario, BU/JW just didn't feel it was worth it (assuming that's less likely - but not out of the realm of possibility).

I know there are many on here who want this thread to die. I, too, hate myself for bumping this up. But as a footnote on this saga, when OA and Chin joined the UK staff, that team was in desperate need of a PG. A week-and-a-half later, they've now added 5* TyTy Washington and Georgia transfer Sahvir Wheeler to the roster. OA and Chin probably don't get all the credit for these new developments, but I think it's pretty undeniable that they are going to play a big role in righting that ship sooner rather than later.

See you in the tournament, fellas.

Where is the "shakes head in agreement, but refuses to like" button?

You should’ve just let this thread die...sometimes dead is better.
