Penn State 86, Illinois 79 2OT POSTGAME

#27
The only coaching criticism I have is the continuation of the 15-18 foot game winning attempts that we settle for. That has to change.

Other than that, we got plenty of open looks today, they didn't drop. It's difficult to fault coaches for not making open looks.

The problem is, we need to get open looks at closer range and that is the coaches fault. There are plenty of options. Pick and rolls. Backdoor cuts. High - Low passes. Off-the-ball screens.

Groce continues to rely on fade aways, three pointers, and long jumpers. The results continue to be the same game after game. Given the minutes each player is playing, he can't expect those shots to fall with tired legs. With one good play at the end of regulation, all the missed shots in overtime are a non-factor.

Put that line leading this team and it's a completely different season. Hopefully that is what TJL is going to bring to the table!

Team shows heart again.
Didn't quit when down double digits in 2nd half.
I don't know what's happened to KN the last several games, but he just hasn't been the same player.
Great game by Hill....obviously.
Wouldn't have got to OT without the tremendous play of Lewis down the stretch.

Yeah. I have saved myself the agony and not participated in these post-game threads, so I apologize if this has already been done, but can somebody do an analysis of Kendrick Nunn's per game stats pre vs. post baby? I swear he's been a bit of a liability overall ever since fatherhood arrived during a game he missed.

Or maybe Abrams can have that kind of line, maybe better in the Pts category?

This is like a repeat of last year. Down the stretch Nunn disappears. Really hope Nunn can fix this next season. It's his last shot.

i expect him to be the 6th man next year

And the total lack of a point guard that can penetrate, draw attention, and dish for open shots

KL did a good job of playing within himself today, but his lack of shooting ability from outside is glaring. His defender plays 5-7 feet off him, clogging up the lane. Same with JT.

Too many guys who cant consistently make the open shots they do get is the problem more so than someone simply passing them the ball.

MH has to play the 3 next year for the team to make the dance. So either JCL or KN starts at the 2. Should be a great battle for the job. Whoever doesn't start will still get good PT. Whoever wins the job will be because of better shooting and D.

I'm sure that's exactly what Groce's offense is designed to do is set up a bunch of fade aways, 3 pointers and long jumpers.

1. Well, it was not a thing of beauty, but it was a hard fought competitive game. Neither team gave up and both teams were dog tired at the end. The Illini and Penn State continue to play close games, which is probably a bad thing everything considered.

2. Obviously a tremendous effort by Malcolm Hill. His quiet demeanor on the court probably distracts from the fact that he is an absolute workhorse much of the time, and he certainly has a lot of talent. There was nothing cheap about his stats in this game.

3. Kendrick Nunn struggled in this one, and Mav came back to Earth. We just won't win very often when Kendrick shoots 3 of 15 from the field, though his 9 rebounds did help us to outrebound Penn State.

4. JCL contributed with some decent play, but Finke was basically AWOL in this one. We need these two to be positive factors in a game like this.

5. The guy who really turned it on late in the game was Khalid Lewis. He not only showed a bit more offense, but he was a major factor on defense in crunch time.

6. Penn State ended up with 8 blocks in the game, and that did play a role in the outcome. We need to get a rim protector again. It does make a difference on defense, and Dickerson was a big factor (literally) in the game.

7. His stat line was not impressive, but DJW keeps showing those flashes of major talent. It will be interesting to see what kind of a sophomore leap he makes.

8. In a shocking development, the worst 3-point shooting team in the conference ended up at 10 of 23 for 43.5% from three in a double overtime game. Who would have thought anyone could do that against us.

9. The good news is that we play Minny next. The better news is that this regular season is over. Our last 13-win team actually went on a tear and made it to the BTT Finals. Somehow I don't think this one will.

Go Illini!

There have been numerous posts lamenting his quiet nature and lack of leadership.

Then I agree with you. I posted earlier today that he is not a 1-on-1, get the ball in his hands at the end of the game kind of player but he is clearly a leader. I understand he is likely being forced to play outside his abilities though. He had a great performance today for sure.

I only have one question; when the score is tied in regulation and you have the ball with 14 seconds to go, you were in the double bonus and you have one timeout, how in Gods green earth do you not even get a shot off, let alone call the timeout to set one up? Another example of Groce's EXTREMELY poor coaching IMHO. A game we should have won after a great comeback and remarkable performance by Malcolm. We deserve better. Let's get this season over, fire Groce, and plan for a better future.

Usually Groce has used up all his timeouts by then, so he probably didn't realize he had it.

 I think you forgot the sarcasm emoji....Offense is not set up that way no more than the other clubs using the same offense...Mich St etc have players in those positions and are executing the options/reads.

I would love to know if there are any stats out there to back this up, but it seems like more and more coaches choose to not call a timeout and let the players make a play. Malcolm was making the right play all game, why not trust him to do it once more?

Name any team in College Bball you want. You take away their projected starting 1, 4 and 5 and this is the type of season you would have (blue bloods included.)

I'd take Kentucky's second unit last year and it would not even be close. :)

Why do people even waste their time writing this kind nonsense. You honestly believe that Groce's game plan calls for nothing but jump shots?

How many floaters, hooks, baseline jumpers, etc. inside 10 feet did we today? I agree with you that we had tons of open, good looks. JCL missed two or three WIDE OPEN threes today. I bet he hasn't done that since before conference play.

If it isn't designed that way, I sure don't know what it is designed for then. I would be curious to know how many pick-and-rolls, back-door cuts, and high-low lobs you saw? I can think of a few but not many. There was one where Mav lobbed one over the top to MH and it resulted in an easy bucket. Why not go back to that again?

Now, count how many times MH took a fade-away jumper (he did shoot well today). Count how many times we took long jumpers. Count the threes we took late in the game with tired legs. The number of assists says it all. This is a 1 on 1, low shooting percentage offense. Once in a while, we may get lucky and shoot someone like Purdue out of the gym.

Nunn really seems to disappear in s lot of games.

I don't think Nunn has been the same since the hip injury... not trying to excuse anything - but I can't help but wonder if something is holding him back. I really wish DJ had gotten more tick in the 2OTs - we were dead out there.
