No point guard? Did you know last years Mr Basketball in Illinois high school was a point guard, won a state championship in 4A , was the tourney mvp , and has a brother who plays baseball at Illinois. I don’t believe we recruited him at all. McCaffery got him at Iowa.
I'll go you 1 better. Owen Freeman same team at Moline Illinois 6.10ft averaging 11pts and 7 rebounds per game. Same team in Illinois and he's crushed it at Iowa as Freshman and we did not recruit him. ?

Sencire oh Sencire where are you? Sencire would not have let that collapse happen. I would not have thought that he'd be the missing link but clearly he is because this defense is the worst defense I have witnessed in my years of being an Illini fan since 1999. Those first couple of BU seasons were a blur but I don't remember them consistently giving up 80-90 ppg.

MD is what he is. We are asking a lot from him because we do not have a true PG (not many teams get everything they want). He is mostly doing as expected now, which is much more than original expectations. I get mad at him at times but it’s because we are asking/expecting too much from him after some of his earlier games. Hawkins 💩 the bed today because he wasn’t properly mentally prepared for the game (far from the first time). Awesome ability but he is killing his future with his brain farts and lack of focus. He should play in the NBA if he could stay focused. If Hawkins played an average game then we would have won. Defense needs to improve for sure. Brutal defense on opposing inbounds plays and ours stunk so I agree that needs to be a coaching focus. Having your second best player not focused was the main reason for the loss in my opinion but I’m sure others feel differently.

Or I don't know, Brad could just play Ty, the PG he opted to go with this season. Hard to cast blame of our losses on not having a PG when we refuse to play our PG down the stretch. Maybe Brad would bench RayJ the final minutes of games also. That would make as much sense as what he's doing with Ty.
I wouldn't put Ty in the elite ball handling/decision making bucket yet. He's also a non factor offensively and while his foul shooting has improved, I'm not sure that he's a guy I want toeing the foul stripe in a must make situation.

I can at least comprehend that thought process...whether I agree or disagree with it.

The Domask dribbling the ball 500x between his legs, to then dribble to the sideline after crossing half court to get trapped isn’t the answer or the way it has to be.

Maybe bring some guys to the ball in middle of floor and pass in backcourt into front court. Use the height of Coleman, TJ, etc.

Brad dropped the ball on personnel and you gotta be more creative that what we had to watch tonight.
I feel like we actually do this a lot of the time and have no issues breaking the press. But then we inexplicably leave Marcus on his own to slowly back his way downcourt and he gets doubled or stripped

Whaaat?! Are you slagging Lon?

Looks like we’d better see some numbers on that. I’m not saying I don’t believe you…but I’m not sure I believe you. 😂
Ha that's just as far back as the KenPom data goes.

Our AdjD right now is 99.9. The only Illinois teams with worse AdjD than this one were:

2019: 101.1
2018: 103.0
2016: 103.0

That was just insane. Not only did we crumble, but Penn State needed about ten separate things to go their way still to win and it did. Let's move on, and hope they play some semblance worth of defense the rest of the way. If they do, they can make a deep run.

Let's all make a pact to never talk about this game again after we beat Iowa on Saturday please

Harmon killed so many times on the back door. Probably the worst defense & whinning job ive seen from Coleman Hawkins. Couldn't make 1 free throw? Goode tries on defense but was looking like a turnstile a few times. Guerrier needs to finish around the basket. He has regressed since Shannon came back. Plain meltdown.

I realize this was a demoralizing loss and we’re all angry, but the reason we didn’t recruit either of those two guys is because we recruited BETTER guys. Time will prove that out

Unfortunately, unless the Illini win out (including winning at Wisconsin and vs Purdue), some on this board will continue to bring up this debacle (as well as the home loss to MD). Just the nature of this board.

But I am with you. My in-laws are Iowa grads, so if Illini were to lose this week, I take this ugly loss and will gladly never talk about it again.

Absolutely atrocious. Zero positives you can take away from that game. Underwood may have taken us as far as he can.

I think we all agree that we don’t have a true PG. We are going to have more turnovers because of that but hopefully our rebounding advantage offsets that or gives us the advantage. You need to look at the total picture with the pieces we have. If everyone got what they wanted then everyone would win the championship. The coaches need to work with what they have. We are doing better than most in the new NIL world, so I’m personally happy as a fan but I would like a national championship as much as everyone else. I don’t want to go backwards though because of unrealistic expectations.

The turnover in this game were huge and not many are talking about them.

18 for us 6 for them. 9 combined for Cohawk and Domask.

You wont win many game turning the ball over like this. Offense may not be the problem but if we cleaned it up we would be unstoppable. We scored 89 and had 18 turnover, imagine if we would take care of the ball.

Defense is obviously terrible on many levels.

When you give an inexperienced coach the keys to run the defensive strategy, it’s not a recipe for success. There is time to fix it because the change is so obvious and right in front of BU’s eyes but he’s too stubborn to do anything about it. Put Chester in charge of defensive strategy. I know it’s easier said than done and you can risk hurting the chemistry of the team and the locker room but oh well, good managers and coaches make those hard decisions.
