A high school JV coach couldn’t coach the defense any worse than Smith. Get rid of Smith.without a Defensive coordinator, firing during the season is harder. I don’t think it’s Josh’s MO to can him so early in the season but they should engineer a mutual agreed upon retirement after the season.
There are two reasons to fire a head coach before the end of the season. One is to get a head start on finding a replacement. The other is because you're afraid the team might win enough games to make the firing "difficult." I don't think he needs to be fired right now, but Whitman might as well get a head start at some point before season's end. Another strike against right now is having to name an interim coach with a bump in pay at a time when funds are tight. Which reminds me, didn't a lot of the assistant coaches get a huge raise this year?
