Name first appeared on a map in 1550, two hundred+ years before the USA existed.

But, uh, Alaska became a state in 1959.

And nobody that lives on or around the aforementioned body of water calls it the gulf of mexico or gulf of america. It's just "the gulf".

Looking forward to the new season starting tomorrow! GO ILLINI!!!

Edit: It's literally one of those words that if you say it several times it starts to sound ridiculous.

But I can guarantee you that the current administration was not thinking of America the continent when they went for the renaming.

It was known as Denali by the state of Alaska forever until the federal govt. changed it to Mt. McKinley in 1917. It was unofficially named that by a gold prospector in 1896. So really, the only thing the Obama Admin did was give its name officially back as Denali.

And it's the Gulf of Mexico.
Alaskans prefer Denali, as McKinley never set foot in the state.

I would also note that Charles Sheldon, a naturalist who spent considerable time hunting and exploring North of the mountain in the very early years of the 20th century (between 1906 and 1911 IIRC), and who was the one that pushed for it to be declared a park by Congress, called it Denali (well at least his book published after his death was titled The Wilderness of Denali). But I believe naming it for Pres. McKinley was part of the politics to get a park established. Hudson Stuck who wrote the story of the first ascent called it Denali as he titled his book The Ascent of Denali. So, the name Mount McKinley was never universally used here in the state, even when officially called Mt. McKinley.
I would add that the mountain is located on the headwaters of what is now known as the Susitna River. But back when the first expeditions into the country were being made it was known as the Sushitna River. The name was changed for obvious reasons.

Enough political references. I come here to get away from that and imagine many others don’t want anything remotely political on this site either.
