It's all about drama. Television thrives on drama...hell humans in general even...whether it's in sports or otherwise.

Arch farting and falling down in Week 1 will be non stop on all the platforms this week....and they will capitalize with eyes on it Saturday.

Arch Manning
All about eyeballs. Manning. They figure they will get more eyeballs from the national brand and keep pimping that Manning story.
Again … didn’t they know that before yesterday, though? My question certainly isn’t how ESPN could ever prioritize Texas over Illini/Duke; that’s obvious, and I could come up with several reasons myself. Choosing to delay deciding which game is on ABC implies they were considering both. I’m struggling to think of a scenario where they pick us, which then makes the decision to have the hold pointless.

Maybe they are banking on a bounceback good game from Manning, and next week's game is their best chance at it this season.

Really is kind of surprising they went with Texas’ home game for ABC. I know some of you will respond with some matter-of-fact statement about how Texas is just this huge brand by itself, and I agree, but … then why have the hold anyway??

In other words, ESPN could have tapped Texas for ABC and Illini/Duke for ESPN on day one, but they chose not to. I would be curious what could have possibly changed their decision, haha. Illini and Duke both won, with our boys winning in particularly dominant fashion. Texas lost, admittedly to a great OSU team on the road, but still. If OSU stomped them, would that have tipped the scales?

I’d love to be a fly on the wall during these conversations, lol. My total guess is perhaps the anticipated atmosphere at Duke might not have been up to par with what ESPN wanted on a broadcast.
With Duke football's vast loyal TV viewing fan base ( and aren't they a dozen of the nicest folks you'll never meet), there is no way ABC features them in an early season game. It would tank ABC ratings to a depth that is dangerous even for nuclear submarines, and that's with us loyal Illini glued to the tube across the country.

Good game 1. No bad injuries. Offense looked sharp - no turnovers. Defense almost had shutout.

Like our chances vs Duke. 3rd year start Qb Luke vs transfer for Duke might be the difference:illinois::illinois::illinois::illinois::illinois::illinois::illinois:

Elon ran for 163 yards against Duke. We need to expose this and pound the rock and wear their D down. We are a far superior team and will prove that we are a top 10 team
We have three good to very good running backs. Establish the run, then gash them with play action passing.

This game sets up great for my favorite football offense-establish the run and then gash teams down the seams off of play action passing. I think our tight ends and slot receivers could have big games.

I didn't see the Duke game against Elon, but what was their run defense struggling with? Not quick enough? Missed assignments?
Questionable linebacker play. D line play wasn't much better either tbh. Could be sleep walking or rust but I didn't see anything that pointed to Illinois scoring less than 30 points.

Might control time of possession 35 to 25 minutes too. Think it'll open up something serious in the 4th quarter

I wonder who is best to take advantage of this. Feagin will be a load for them but Laughery or Valentine might be able to break one off if a LB misses a gap assignment.

we were at Madison Square Garden. I want revenge. I want payback. I want our defense to outscore their offense. And I want our offense to flat out roll.

FWIW, players are going to need frequent breathers. Forecast is calling for 90 degrees in Durham Saturday the 6th.

Tough game to judge knowing that Diaz could have purposely be running vanilla defensive concepts against Elon knowing they were going to roll regardless. I'll say:

Illinois 27
Duke 21

Mensah looks good again. Illinois wins the turnover battle. Slower start for Illinois offense but they roll the middle-8.
