14 is Xavier Scott.
My bad. Thanks. Fixed it.

But Xavier Scott did get toasted trying to defend IU's wide receiver #1. And yet on the rare occasion a pass was incomplete to IU's #1, our #14 was jawing at him to the point I thought he was going to get an unsportsmanlike penalty. Lol.

I don’t understand why we tolerate it. You can throw a game away on foolish penalties. A string of them is the only reason I’ll walk out. Just can’t bear to watch foolishness. And spitting on someone? Classless. Let your playing speak for itself. Are our guys that insecure?

I actually though Xavier covered him a little better than Taz(spitting is also inexcusable by the way, what gross behavior).... but not a great day from the secondary obviously. I don't know a lot about football but my gut keeps telling me Taz just isn't a great scheme fit as the feature corner. He's a talented cover corner, but has some real issues with bigger WR's in 1 on 1 scenarios.

I still dont understand Indiana's playcalling on OT, though. Not sure if we adjusted something or if Indiana tried to outsmart themselves or what. They didn't even try to get it to their #1 WR...

Spoon jawed at everyone BECAUSE he was elite. It seems some of the other guys have the causation backwards...

Last game vs Indiana

Isaiah Williams 9 receptions for 200 yards and 2 TD

Pat Bryant 5 receptions for 131 yards and 1 TD

Casey Washington 4 receptions for 99 yards and 1 TD

Feagin and Love are a solid mix

I trust BB and the coaching staff whoever they start at QB. We don't need 500 yards of offense to beat Iowa. The main thing we need is distributing the ball around to our playmakers. Effectively moving the ball on the ground and through the air. We need to put the pressure on Iowa and get up by halftime. Iowa thrives off those 10-6, 3-0, 7-6, etc one possession score games at half and take over in the second half. Hang onto the ball on offense and make Iowa force some throws once we get up would be ideal.

Obviously taking care of the ball is priority #1. The key player, IMO, will be Robertson. I have a feeling that field position will be the key to the game, especially if neither offense can get any traction.

And many fans want to get rid of our OC. Hmm.
I have been critical of Lunney Jr, no doubt. Lunney Jr has the offense moving the chains but scoring points consistently has been a problem. I have never called for him to be fired but they need to score more points on a consistent basis. I have been quite impressed in the last month of how things have turned around. Even certain things that don't work at least Lunney Jr has tinkered with certain formations and throwing a few curveballs instead of the old vanilla offense.

My heart can't take another 9-6 type game. This is our make-or-break game of the season. Win and what had been a disappointing season looks a whole better. Lose and we're praying for a bowl game

Yeah, agreed. I get frustrated with some of the calls too. But I'm much more concerned with defense and penalties.

This is a touch exaggerated, and by no means is Saturday a must win game for the season or program. I sure don't think we should be "praying" to beat Northwestern. It will be a tough game for sure against Northwestern, but one where Illini should be favored to win. Obviously a win on Saturday clinches a bowl berth, but the win over IU on Saturday was the key game to win to open up two chances at clinching a bowl berth.

Agree. Penalties are huge on both sides

It depends if us as fans analyze week by week or over the long period. Secondary was a concern coming into this season and were totally exposed last week vs Indiana. We made adjustments vs the #1 WR and still looked shaky no doubt. Indiana has tore up our secondary in back to back years.

Big thing I have noticed as the season has gone on is that the offense moves the ball better in a faster tempo pace. Same goes whether Altmyer/Paddock is behind center. Also means the D will be on the field more unless we make routine longer drives.

The gameplan won't be the same vs Iowa as it was against Indiana. There have been games where the opponent RB isn't touched until he is 5-8 yards past scrimmage, no defender within 5 yards of receiver and also games where our tackling looks questionable. Same goes with short incomplete passes, O-line struggles at times, turnovers, etc. Bunch of reasons we are a 5-5 team. I get frustrated like anyone else because there is a ton of potential if we play a complete game. That being said I am proud of the way the guys have fought back and still think we are overachieving under the BB regime. Iowa is a tough opponent at home and the more fundamental team that shows up will prevail next week :illinois:

This is a weird one. On one hand, if anything even close to our offense from this past week can move the ball on Iowa, their offense is so bad that we do not need to score that many points to snag a W. Sure, their defense is elite ... but something will have to give.

On the other hand, if our defense is going to leave the kind of open receivers that we did against Indiana, even Iowa can exploit it. Count me as pretty darn nervous for this one. If we can get our defense from the first half of the PSU game that was a lot more reliable and consistent play to play, I REALLY like our chances.

That's fair, but as far as program perception goes (for recruiting), beating Iowa two years in a row would mean a lot

The insecurity comes from the problem that we have no leadership in the secondary with Syd gone and Bailey out for the year

I think perception is indeed what is one the line here. Already since Bret has been here, I think we have graduated out of our classic "2-4 win type program" status, and rival fans know Illinois is going to take down someone they shouldn't in a given year. With that said, I think the prevailing perception is that we are currently a "4-6 win type program," with many casual college football fans chalking up last year to Chase Brown and a defense stocked with NFL talent. Losing to Iowa and beating Northwestern (or even losing to Northwestern) keeps us right in that aggressively average part of the curve.

However, going into Iowa City and knocking off the team who is in the driver's seat to win the Big Ten West on their home field after an up and down season sends a statement that Illinois football is at least a factor in things. Because honestly, if we can pull off the upset Saturday, the list of things that have to happen for us to go to Indy is SHOCKINGLY short and not very outlandish at all.

I'll take the 9-6 dub all day. Sure, I'll drink more bourbon than usual, but is that really bad? /s
Thing I want the most is two in a row over Iowa. And a win in Kinnick.
I didn't even include this component in my post about how this game is really important as far as program perception goes, but what an accomplishment and step forward this would be! What is really sad is that I was actually at the last game we won at Kinnick. I was 8 years old, and we had just moved to Iowa City from Peoria. My dad had me decked out in orange and blue, and it was a fun day.

That was 1999 and literally Ferentz's first season there as head coach.

They were 0-8 in the BT and 1-10 overall in his first season. Hayden had stayed too long and the cupboard was bare. They were awful that season.
