Marquette is rebuilding and not expected to finish in the top half of the Big East. Should be another Illini win, even without Kofi.

I realize it's two lesser opponents...but if we continue to defend and rebound like this......the rest should take care of itself. Just too many options and too much depth.

Anyone know of a good watering hole near Fiserv Forum? Bonus points for an Illini friendly one.

Marquette Golden Warriors - Program Overview
  • Located in Milwaukee
  • Conference: Big East (since 2005)
  • Coach Shaka Smart: 1st season at Marquette (273-142 career record)
    • Renowned for the “havoc” full court pressure defense used with great success at mid-major VCU (2009-2015), he rarely utilized it after moving up to high major Texas. He still speaks favorably about using pressure depending on personnel, depth and circumstances, but seems more inclined to apply it situationally/opportunistically these days.
    • Replaced Steve Wojciechowski (128-95 overall between 2015-16 and 2020-21, 59-68 in Big East, 2 NCAA appearances (0-2) in 7 years), who disappointed following a period of 8 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances between 2006 and 2013 under previous coaches Tom Crean and Buzz Williams (who had two Sweet 16 teams and an Elite 8 team between 2011-2013).
    • At Texas, Smart’s results (109-86 overall, 51-56 in Big 12, no NCAA tournament wins in three tourney appearances) were not markedly different than the Wojo era at Marquette over a similar period. Following another first round NCAA exit (upset loss to Abilene Christian), he moved on for a fresh start at Marquette while also getting closer to his roots (grew up ~15 miles south of Madison).
    • At mid-major VCU, Smart followed up an unexpected 2011 Final Four appearance (as an #11 seed) with three KenPom top 30 finishes and four seasons with 26 or more victories.
    • Per media reports, was pursued by former AD Mike Thomas for the Illinois job after the 2012 firing of Bruce Weber that ultimately led to the hiring of John Groce.
  • 33 NCAA tournament appearances, most recently in 2019 (first round exit).
    • 1977 NCAA tournament champions under Al McGuire
  • 8 NBA draft picks since 2000, most recently in 2016 (four first rounders, including Dwayne Wade and Jimmy Butler)
  • Several of their more prominent alums have Chicago area roots, including Dwayne Wade, Jerel McNeal, Doc Rivers, Walter Downing and Bo Ellis.
  • Illinois all-time record vs. Marquette: 9-5 (3-3 in road games), most recent game in 1993

  • In 2020-21, Marquette finished 13-14 overall and 8-11 in the Big East.
    • Major roster turnover following the coaching change, including the departure of leading scorers Dawson Garcia (to North Carolina) and DJ Carton (declared for draft, in G League). Others who left include Theo John (Duke), Symir Torrence (Syracuse), Jamal Cain (Oakland) and Koby McEwen (Weber State).
    • 9 new players on the roster between transfers and freshmen.
      • 4 Transfers in: Darryl Morsell (Maryland); Kur Kuath (Oklahoma); Tyler Kolek (George Mason) and Olivier-Maxence Prosper (Clemson).
      • 5 Freshmen: #20 recruiting class per Rivals includes three 4-star players (RSCI Top 100 PG Stevie Mitchell, CG Emarion Ellis and F David Joplin). Three of the 5 previously were Texas commits.
      • Returnees: include Justin Lewis, Greg Elliott and Oso Ighodaro
  • 2021-22 Season:
    • KenPom.com ranking: #96; Barttorvick.com ranking: #101
    • 2-0 record.
    • Both games have been competitive (88-77 win over SIU-Edwardsville was a 6 point game with 1:38 left; 75-70 win over New Hampshire was a 1 point game with 27 seconds left).
    • 7-26 and 7-27 in 3FG attempts first two games.
  • Expected significant contributors include:
    • Darryl Morsell: 6’5” Big Ten defensive POY last season at Maryland. Looks to be more of a scorer at Marquette, is averaging 23.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 31 minutes after first two games.
    • Justin Lewis: 6’7”, 245 lbs., 4 star recruit averaged 7.1 points and 5.4 rebounds as a freshman last season. Averaging 17 points and 11 rebounds (with two double-doubles) in 30 minutes in first two games this season.
    • Olivier-Maxence Prosper – 6’8” Canadian F and 4-star recruit out of HS played sparingly at Clemson last year. Averaging 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 24.5 minutes in first two games.
    • Tyler Kolek: 6’3” guard was Atlantic 10 rookie of the year last season at George Mason. Averaging 8.5 points and 6 assists in 23.5 minutes in first two games.
    • Kur Kuath: athletic 6’10” forward averaged 5.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 17.1 minutes for Oklahoma last season. Has started both games this season, but played only 13 and 14 minutes.
    • Oso Ighodaro 6’9” forward played in only 5 games as a freshman last year, but looks to have a bigger role this year, averaging 5 points and 7.5 rebounds in 24.5 minutes in first two games.
    • Stevie Mitchell: freshman RSCI Top 100 PG is averaged 10.5 points and 3 assists in 23 minutes in first two games.
    • Kam Jones: 6’3” freshman SG (3 star Rivals, 4 star 247).
Greg Elliott, a super senior G who averaged 6.2 ppg last year; is suspended for the first 4 regular season games for “failure to adhere to our department policies”.

There were still quite a few tickets available. This should be a good road test. MU has some talent and the crowd should challenge us a bit but I except the killer instinct to take over. Excited to see CoHawk kill it and maybe get that triple-double 😉

Through grade school I grew up in Brookfield in an ordinary neighborhood. Al McGuire lived two houses away. Almost every evening in the summer, he and his wife would take walks around the block while we were out playing. He was humble and friendly, no hint of fame, simply just a neighbor. I've always wished MU well. Hope we crush them and they have a good season.

In honor of Marquette, some Al McGuireisms:

"If the waitress has dirty ankles, you know the chili is good."
"Everyone who graduates from college should spend six months as a bartender and six months as a cab driver. Then, they'd really be educated."
"I come from the part of New York where if you fall down, they pick you up by your wallet."
(To Adolph Rupp) "Don't call me 'son' unless you're planning to put me in your will."
