It may take till mid season for Brad to find the right lineups for this set of players.

Maybe platoon system

Platoon 1 - Morez, KJ, Ty, Kylan, Ben
Platoon 2 - Tomas, DGL, Riley, Booth, Tre

Do hockey style line changes every 7 minutes
However Brad might not like having both KJ and Kylan out at same time.
:)

Genuinely, I could not be more excited for this scrimmage. I feel a little silly saying that, but it’s true.

Last year, going into Kansas, most of us knew we were going to be pretty darn good. Even if we hadn’t seen those players together, there was a ton of film on each of them against college-level competition. It didn't take too much processing power to understand guys who’ve already done it in college would continue to do so, even if we didn’t know just how dominant some of them would become.

This year, though, it's a bit more of a mystery box. We have a sneaking suspicion we’ll be good—the talent seems to be through the roof—but we are extrapolating form and play styles from all kinds of different competition. We think it’ll translate and the pieces will mesh, but this is the first chance to see a lot of these guys live and against this level of competition. Because of that, this is a stop what I’m doing and lock in for two hours situation. I can’t wait to see what Brad has built.

I love the new normal of charity exhibitions in October against a high major team. The money goes to a good cause and us sickos get an early preview before the games really begin in late November. It’s a much appreciated aperitif.
It also adds to my intrigue that the B1G is more wide open than in the past with the departure of Edey. While there are front runners I expect the B1G champion to have a fair number of losses this year.

One of the rebounders, Morez or Ty, needs to be on the other team.

Maybe it's just me but I have no idea what not cleared by the NCAA but eligible to participate in the exhibition actually means other than players still in the process of being cleared by the NCAA can still play in exhibitions. Not sure if this is a sign of making headway with the NCAA as much as Brad saying we can play him if we want.
I also have no idea but Brad made it sound like the NCAA didn’t clear Tomi for the Butler scrimmage but he was cleared against Ole Miss.

And maybe the decision to hold Tomi out of the Butler scrimmage was Brad’s and I misheard or misunderstood him. I don’t see why the NCAA would weigh in either way in on a scrimmage or exhibition

I do agree, keeping one of KJ and Kylan on the floor all of the time, health and fouls permitting. I like DGL a lot better as the secondary point guard. And they could still have 30/30/20 splits if they were the only ones playing the 1-2. If others are also playing "guard" (Tre, Ty, Will), then I have no idea how much time DGL will be getting. I just know that I have heard that Brad LOVES DGL.

Won’t happen. Do your lineups have starters not all together in either lineup? So never the best lineup on the court?

1. Coaches aren’t going to use mass line changes at this level.

2. Your best players should be on the court the most minutes.

3. Ivisic is the starting center at this point. White probably the starting three. Ivisic, Humrichous, White or Riley, Boswell, KJ

4. As much as we like to think we have tremendous depth, the fact is BU will probably run an 8-man rotation in big games. Occasionally 9.

Ivisic playing was announced yesterday. Hardly a scoop by Greg.

Greg has a dislike for Boswell. Always downplaying his skills. He said today that the last starting spot would come down to Boswell and Riley. More likely White, Riley or Rodgers on the wing. Boswell is a mainstay.

It was announced Tomi would play in this exhibition, I hadn’t seen anything about real games

I have nothing against Boswell(or DGL for that matter) but I wouldn't be surprised if the most effective lineup the Illini have doesn't have him in it.

It's just a simple matchup issue and most teams are really going to struggle with the potential size that the Illini could run out with some combination of Kasparis, Riley, White, Hummer, Ty, Morez, or Ivisic(even potentially Booth or Davis).

They can legitimately play an entire lineup full of guys listed at 6'6+ while having a ton of shooting and ball skills. That has the potential to create a ton of matchup issues for opposing teams.

We’re going to be such a hard match up. I feel bad for the other B1G coaches… actually nvm no I don’t.

Is that why my voice setting just changed from the standard generic female to the cheeky male European accent?

Y'all are forgetting about defense. The freshmen are always going to be behind in that department. Boswell will be a 25-30 min guy when B1G season roll around.
They will need his defense.
Boswell, Tre White, and ty Rodgers. Vs. Will Riley, humrichous, maybe KJ and tomi. All defense vs all offense. Interesting how these mix and match up in the lineup

Thank you. Feel like the hockey style line changes comments for basketball are the equivalent of maybe we use the barge formation in football.

It is troubling. But just remember, it's the NCAA we're dealing with here. They've never been friends of the Illini.

I'll repeat myself. I won't make defensive judgments until 5-6 games in.

I’m confused about this comment. Belima actually does use this formation. It is specifically mentioned in the post game after we beat Penn State in 9 overtimes.

And some have repeatedly asked to use it ever since even though it was incredibly situational. BU has also used the line change at times when he was pissed at his starters. Doesn't mean it's practical all the time.

Yeah, I agree. It’s definitely a situational thing 90% of the time. Generally, it’s just impractical to get away from that 8-9 rotation…and truth be told it usually tightens up even more as the season goes along.

HOWEVER: He did utilize it as an attitude adjusting option; as you said…I also feel like we DID successfully utilize the platoon-thing (for a time) when we had “good Curbelo”. There were times that second unit sparked us & was actually even the deciding factor. It gave us a massively different kind of attack and was definite asset. But I think that was a pretty unique situation that season.
