That was the Jimmy V. Classic. Bill was actually there to watch his son who coaches at UConn, though I expect that he was pulling for us vs. FAU.
While I’m sure that’s what prompted him to attend, as others have said he was sporting Illini gear. He’s also been to a few Big Ten 10k events in Chicago over the years, in Illini gear each time.

So, I do not think any of our fans should treat him as someone we need to “win back” on the bandwagon. Bill is a fan and always has been! I wish we’d milk that publicity a bit more, though.

Yes, get him in for a pre-game pep talk. Would definitely loosen the team up.

I think we have a decent chance at this if we can "Bootie Ball" with Marcus and Ty, then pass out to Marcus or Quincy for the trey when Zach collapses or can't make it out to the wing. Easier said than done but they did a nice job with this at NW considering this was just recently added to the offense arsenal.
BTW - everyone is talking about this like it's a new thing that started with Pickett and Pen State but wasn't there a lot of Bootie Ball going on when the Bulls cleared everyone out, then a big strong guard named MJ back his man down before dishing to a wide open BJ Armstrong (then insert John Paxson, then Toni Kukoc, then Steve Kerr, then any player who could hit the three)? Advantage to us if the guy now shooting the three is 6-10 and can drive if someone does happen to close in time. Wishful Kool-aid thinking?

Meant "pass out to Coleman or Quincy" not "Marcus or Quincy"

This is a chance to show everyone that Underwood has put together a great team…not just one great player and some other guys.
While I definitely agree a win makes that statement emphatically, I don’t think a loss eliminates that possibility! We are truly playing with no downside and nothing to lose…

… but MAN a win sends such a huge statement. Arguably a bigger deal than smoking Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2021. And probably would be the most important regular season “statement” win (in more ways than one) since beating Wake Forest in 2004-05…

From Brett Behrens tweet:

"Illinois has only beat a No. 1 ranked team three times in program history, 3-20 all time against No. 1 and they've all come at home: 2/7/13 vs. No. 1 Indiana 12/1/04 vs. No. 1 Wake Forest 1/11/79 vs. No. 1 Michigan St."

IIRC, that win in '79 resulted in the Illini getting to 17-0 and the #1 ranking...and the subsequent swoon into oblivion the rest of the season. I could be wrong.

Also, IIRC, I had seen MSU play in early Dec. After about 15 min. of play, I called my Dad to watch. I told him that this MSU team was the best I had ever seen and that they would win the NCAA title easily...which actually happened. It was simply Magic (see what I did there). We were all blessed to see the very first of the Magic/Bird tussles on the hardwood. Epic.

I hope not
Understandable....I'm not sure if I was describing or stating why correctly....it was more because of everything that is going on right now. An us against them type uniform, not so much to use regularly, big game...not many giving us a chance....some already doubting us...shrugs. Anyways, like I said, I have always loved our uniforms, I was just wondering.

Was the '87 game when Doug A missed a couple of free throws at the end? Very rare for him.

Yes, but it was one free throw with 1 second on the clock. Purdue cheerleaders ran onto the court thinking the game was over and the team was assessed a technical. But Altenberger missed the free throw. 🫤

This match with Purdue will be unlike any other game. But one team the Illini have played was similar regarding guard play/perimeter shooters and a very good big man. That was FAU and their 7 ft. Russian surrounded by several good chuckers.

If you have read this thread, there are a plethora of strategies suggested. However, most are suggested because they play into Illini strengths. However, for this game, there is a coach on the other side that is quite likely not at all interested in doing that. The Illini will need to make shots, and have exhibited the ability to do that from every player. Purdue will need to do the same. I expect the team that can find success in heretofore non-traditional ways will emerge with victory in what I expect to be a game that is a bloodbath and may find baskets as a premium.

Or I could be totally wrong....after all this is college hoops.

Playing with major house money here. But if we win this game, we're winning the conference. For that I have no doubt.
I agree - it's basically a free roll game - we're not expected to win, especially without TSJ. It should take all the pressure off and we can play loose.

I'd like to see them let Edey get his and really clamp down on all of their shooters and take our chances we can slow Edey down enough to win

That game had Purdue shooting twice as many free throws as Illinois. Illinois was up by 3 at the end of regulation after two Bardo free throws. Doug Lee (forgot about him) hit a three at the buzzer to send it to overtime. Tied at the end of overtime Altenberger got called for a bogus travel call on a rebound with 3 seconds left. Purdue missed a last second layup but there was a foul. Purdue hit the free throw and won.

All right…I was at the Wake Forest game and I was at the Indiana game…I wasn’t born yet for the ‘79 game against Mich St.

I’ll be at the Purdue game tomorrow and I’ll have witnessed 3/4 times the Illini have beaten the #1 ranked team! ILL!
This’ll be the first of those games I haven’t been at. It’s a long commute from Florida.

I don’t care, preseason or not, if we beat Purdue I’m calling it the second #1 team we beat this season😎 how many other teams could say that? So what if it was about 2 days before rankings started, Kansas has held on to #1 or 2 spot basically the entire season. Got to admit it’s pretty damn tough to do once much less twice!

Ironically, I’ll be watching an Illini tomorrow but not THE Illini. I’ll be at the Bulls game👍
