Ah the University of Virginia. The history. The architecture. The Vineyard Vines.

My freshman year, Jeff George and company beat them in the Citrus Bowl in a game that wasn't really as close as the 31 - 21 final margin.

Nine years later Kurt Kittner was the MVP in a 63 - 21 romp in the Micron PC Bowl. (Rocky Harvey ran for over 100, too.)

Those are the only two games I could find, and maybe the only two times they've met.

That said, I'd feel better if the game were in Florida.
I was at both of those bowl games and somehow wound up near UVA fans both times. I found them particularly obnoxious, towards their own team as well as their opponent. UVA had a marching band in the freeform Stanford style, no uniforms, running around, etc. Their halftime program at the Citrus Bowl mocked the state of Illinois. Their fans jeered the Marching Illini and chanted “High School Band”. I’m sure UVA is a fine school but I was not impressed with their fan base on those two occasions.

Who's the starting qb? I kinda like art, also can they get Spain more involved. Crazy to think out best WR's are former qb's. We also have good TE's finally.

Ah... and I recall both sweet victories. In late '99 my girlfriend was a UVa grad. She invited ~ dozen of her UVa friends over to her place to watch the game with us. They all talked smack from walking in the door. I maintained Buddha-like composure. She bet me a dinner at a posh Northern Virginia restaurant on the outcome.

It started off 7-7 in the first quarter. By halftime we were up 42-7. The lamentations of all those UVa alums (mostly women) as the Illini drove them into the wilderness still resonate sweetly in my ears 20 years later. The next night was New Year's Eve of the millennium, and it was only Friday night.

That was a pretty darn satisfying weekend.

The allies couldn't get Spain involved either.
lol. I imagine the traumatic exposure to the "civil war" between Alabama and Auburn when the latter was recruiting him played a role in that reluctance to engage in further combat.

Unless Beilema can recruit players who can successfully pass rush, there will be no real meaningful betterment of Illini football. There will just be shootouts on occasions.

All three of our lines have seemed like more of a referendum on the opposing team than us.

Virginia has of late been a typical ACC Coastal "anything can happen in any given week, just throw darts at a dartboard to pick their games" team.

Yeah. That's about the size of it. I've lived in and around DC off and on for 25 years. UVa puzzles me. Its alums are inexplicably insufferable, apparently believing that the mere fact that Thomas Jefferson founded the university bestows elite status upon them. (They refer to the place --- I'm not kidding --- as "Mr. Jefferson's university.")

My experience is that the grads from Virginia Tech are more substantial and grounded. And yet UVa grads look down on the Hokies. It's bizarre. UVa's grad schools (business, law medicine) are excellent, however, and their graduates are normal. Plus Charlottesville is a great little town.

One of my younger colleagues currently is a UVa grad from '09 or so. He's solid and mocks the pretentiousness of the school (and its ridiculous "marching" band.) But he enjoyed his time there. He's from NW Tennessee.

I'm curious about my fellow DC-area Loyalty posters' opinion of the place. Coincidentally, I'm taking my daughter (a high school senior) down there this Friday for her second visit. Perhaps I can see the Illini practicing during the afternoon. She loved VA Tech and Blacksburg.

A lot of members on this site need to reevaluate their their expectations for 2021 Illinois football and look at the long-term potential in this program.

And that long term potential would be what?

No longer the laughing stock of the Power 5 living in our nerd cousins basement, but holding down a respectable living slugging it out with Iowa and Wisconsin.
I’d like to dream bigger but that seems like a decent, respectable year 4 goal.

UVA grads are like people who have lived in NYC, do crossfit, and/or are vegan - each will instinctively figure out the most direct route to "casually" mentioning the fact in conversation upon meeting someone new.

That their diplomas are the size of a standard sheet of posterboard isn't a coincidence.

Props on the Civil War reference. I believe the Illinoisan Grant drove Robt E Lee into the Wilderness during a campaign some years earlier.
