I can’t remember ever wanting to call out of work for Illinois football, but I won’t put the bad juju on us.
Huge day for this program.
Wisco is ripe to be upset at home.
We just may have the defense to do it.

CHAMPAIGN — Calvin Hart’s birthday last Tuesday came with a nice surprise. Two days before the team played against Chattanooga, Hart’s daughter Malani was born.
An eager Hart started against the Mocs in a 31-0 win before racing home to see his newborn daughter.
"It was very exciting," Hart said. "Just going into that game was a different feeling, playing with just a different purpose and different responsibilities."
The baby was expected to be born in early October, with a tentative plan being put in place after Hart gave the news to coach Bret Bielema.

"I said, 'Let's play this game Thursday and we'll get you in first flight Friday morning and get you back Monday. How does that sound?'" Bielema said. "He's like, perfect. And I'm like, alright, so let's roll. And that's kind of just CJ you know, his dad's a pastor. CJ's a very faith-based kid. His parents are incredible role models for him. I think that's the maturity that he has."
Hart, a junior from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, went back for the weekend after the team’s Thursday game before returning at the beginning of the week.

The Slush Fund scandal ('67) kneecapped both programs. Football only came back briefly in the early '80s under Mike White and then '88-91 under Mackovic. Basketball, however, maintained strong teams in the late 60s before declining in the early '70s. Lou brought it back fairly quickly and sustained the success.

Regarding football, IMO you can't minimize the negative knock-on effects of Neale Stoner being forced to resign as AD in mid-'88 after hiring Mackovic the preceding winter, Guenther assuming interim AD duties, and then Mackovic, a stellar coach who gave us three strong seasons from '88-'90, becoming the full-time AD.

This meant that when Mackovic left for Texas in Dec. '91, we lost both our coach and AD. Accordingly, we lacked a stable, strong AD to hire a new football coach, and made do with Guenther promoting Tepper. Then Guenther took the AD role by default. That began the long decline of what had been, briefly, a resuscitated football program.

My recollection of the history. Feel free to correct my possibly addled memory.
Your recollection is spot on.

Hopped on RD Redemption 2 this morning just to hunt down a Badger and make some stew for the camp! Lets Go Illini!
Had to Google RD Redemption to figure out what you were talking about.

On a complete side note, congrats to Google on being basically synonymous with online search. I actually prefer and use Yahoo for searches, but few would know what I meant if I said “Had to Yahoo.” OK, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I’m seeing a close, last possession decides it kind of game. I think we’re ultimately going to need Tommy D to make some plays to win.
Are we ready to take that next step as a program? I’m not sure we are just yet. Hope I’m wrong.
