Will Leitch is good.

That article is very much how I feel.
Good article. How I feel too. I got to see the Cubs win in 2016 & am trying to adopt a "if it's our time, it's our time" mentality. That is the way it played out in 2016. When bumps came up that had previously derailed, the Cubs just found a way. Illini can do it. Just a little luck (for once) at the most opportune time.

I think Virginia’s loss to UMBC makes it less likely we’ll see another 16 over 1 upset any time soon since players now know that it CAN happen. Also, if they fall behind a bit, they won’t have the added pressure of being the first 1 seed to lose to a 16.
+ Virginia's methodical style of play and inability (it seemed) to run up-tempo made it difficult for them to climb back in that UMBC game IIRC.

Ok, that seals the deal. Put a temporary roof on the football stadium, have a free appreciation day for the TEAM and watch the Illini fans who have been deprived of seeing these guys in person TEAR THE ROOF OFF THE PLACE.

But... why does there need to be a roof?

In case anyone's interested, the main Drexel basketball board appears to be here.

(Try not to be embarrassing)
“We would be smart to double Cockburn quickly once he gets the ball. We are going to need Mate and Walton and TJ to really step up on defense. those guys' length could cause Illinois some problems if we can stay with them. If we get caught flat footed we will be scrambling all over the court and it wont end well. Illinois shoots FTs at 68%. We should not be scared of putting them to the line.

On offense we need to keep doing what we did in the CAAT. Produce some open shots and hit them. Getting to the rim should not be too much trouble. Butler should be able to pull Cockburn away from the basket so we can avoid getting blocked.

There are worse matchups for us than this one. It wont be easy, obviously, but I dont think we are completely dead in the water before it starts, either.”

This is our fourth time as a 1-seed in program history. We've struggled a bit in two of our previous three 1 vs. 16 games. The Flyin' Illini team only won by 6.
I think this team is locked in and will win comfortably on Friday, but I'm not going to panic if we only win by 10 or something.

1989: Illinois 77 - McNeese St. 71
2001: Illinois 96 - Northwestern St. 54
2005: Illinois 67 - Fairleigh Dickinson 55
For those old enough to remember that McNeese St game, we put in the backups with about 2 minutes to go with the score 71-51 and McNeese St start hitting every shot they took it seemed like for those last two minutes.

If I were a Drexel fan, I could totally see myself believing this.....but, they are very wrong.

Let’s just keep rolling boys. I bet any Loyola fan a 6 pack that Kofi drops a double double on Krutwig. (If that scenario plays out)

Getting ahead of myself. My father and I can’t wait for the game. Streaming at work on my desk. Beat Drexel!

I'm impressed at your memory. I have no recollection of who we played in the first and second rounds that year, let alone details of the games. Only L'ville and SYR on the second weekend, and vague ones at that.

Oh yeah I remember that entire tournament as I do other ones. I remember we played Rick Majerus and Ball St. in the 2nd round. That was a big deal because even though I was an Illini fan, Ball St was a local school being a little bit north of Indianapolis where I'm from. It was a pretty competitive game but we just have too much for Ball St. Majerus left to go to Utah after that season replaced by Dick Hunsaker and the next season that's when Ball St. almost beat eventual champion UNLV in the Sweet 16

Illinois 32 - Farleigh Dickinson 31 at the half back in 2005. You just nevr know.
Correct. Nearly every team in the tourney is on a hot streak, many having just won their conf tourney, or having a solid body of work during the season. Every team has a roster filled with D1 scholarship players. If we start a game thinking it's won when the sneakers are laced up, bad things can happen.

I was at the McNeese St game. Obviously it was our first game in a dome. We shot poorly early. But there was no doubt in the outcome.

Virginia just kept shooting 3 pointers instead of driving and moving UMBC's D around. Virginia just played stupid, but give UMBC credit because they forced Virginia to play stupid.

Exactly, we didn't struggle in that game. As I stated we were ahead comfortably by 20, put in the subs with about 2 minutes to go and Mc Neese St started all of sudden making every shot.

You're right. I just watched some of that game and hadn't recalled that UVa just didn't seek to penetrate much and had poor perimeter shot selection. Meanwhile, UMBC just carved them up with ball movement, open outside looks, and driving. Raftery offered this gem near the end: "You lose these games two days beforehand. Are you mentally prepared? Do you respect your opponent?" I'll bet more than one coach of a high-seeded team has shown his players that horror film during the runup to their first game.

This is more thought and effort than I would have expected from the NCAA. Still, it is sad for our fans that the NCAA put our game 1 in the Fairgrounds Coliseum - by far the smallest seating venue in the tourney (6800 max in normal times). There are literally a dozen larger high school gyms in Indiana.
It's probably more fair to put the 'home' teams in the smallest venue. Also out of character for the NCAA, but it makes sense (if on purpose).

If Purdue got the big arenas, nevermind and screw 'em

Purdue is in Lucas Oil Stadium on the court where the BTT was played.
