I think if Dain can view this year as one for growth, I could see him being a great leader next year.

He seems to be dedicated to refining his craft. I really don’t have any doubt he can be an all big ten player if he can get more game time under his belt, but this team is heavy at the 5. I think Hansberry pushing him will be the most challenging part of the year for him, but if he can be solid defensively (something that was glaringly missing against KU) I think he can carve out 15-20 a game.

Even if Dainja loses minutes this year, there appear to be plenty next year. The only bigs I'm seeing on the roster are Dainja, Morez and Hansberry. Even if Morez and Hansberry play 30m/game, that leaves 20m for Dainja.
True but the portal is always open and I just have a hard time seeing a guy who is already in year 4 not being upset at losing playing time.

But who knows.

Sure, when CH and others are hitting 3s (CH went 4-9 and IL shot 41% as a team on 3s against KU), and we're playing a team with a good 7'2" center (who we'd like to draw out of the lane to guard CH), then it makes sense for Underwood to play Dainja less and go with CH at the 5. But, come on, how often is that going to happen?

We shot 30.8% as a team last season on 3s last season (WAY lower than 41%) and most teams have centers about Dain's size or less. Dainja was our highest percentage FG shooter on the team last season by a wide margin (at 64%), and he averaged over 20 mins a game then. It would be a huge mistake by Underwood to play him only 12 to 14 mins this season. That simply isn't going to happen.

Yeah, it would great if CH suddenly turned into a terrific 3pt shooter, and we shot 41% from the rest of the season, but even more arch on CH's shot, a healthy Goode, and smarter Domask (vs dumber Mayer) is not going to boost our 3pt percentage by over 10% this season. No, we ARE going to struggle to score at times, especially on the road, and we are going need plenty of mins from Dainja to get us through that. Dain is also going to have to reduce his TOs from last season and increase his rebounds, if we want to win a bunch of those games. I expect Dain to play about 20 mins a game this season for these reasons. This will make perfect sense once our guys start missing a bunch of 3s.

REALLY great photo and poster! Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but the emphasis on the top four guys sitting on the AH and with a very emphatic Dain in the middle, seems to feature/highlight them as our most valuable players. Maybe it’s just that they’re our most important IllinoisLoyalists…
Not sure Goode is a top 4 guy over Domask at this point. I was really impressed with Marcus’ all around feel for the game and basketball IQ. I see him playing the point (in combo with Harmon) almost every game for the final 5 minutes.

The portal can allow you to 'get well' in a hurry. In her last year, Fahey (women's basketball) went 1-13 in conference. The next year, Green's first, we went 11-7. The roster in Green's first year looked like this: https://fightingillini.com/sports/womens-basketball/stats
Transfers on that roster included Cook, Bryant, Bostic, Shoup-Hill, Rhodes and a couple players further down the bench. In her second year she snagged both Hobby and Bollin from the portal and they will play significant roles.
I hope Illinois does everything they can to keep Green in CU in the future.

Good points. See this a game by game decision depending on matchups and shooting in that particular game. Brad does like to go to the hot hand. See this a team of individual skills which may be very valuable one game and not needed in the next. Average mins may be low for six guys but high in particular games. Coaching should be really fun but success in particular games may be dependent upon game decisions. Lots of tools but must use correct tool for particular job.

Eastern is #338 on KenPom for those interested… 338 out of 362.
Eastern coach Marty Simmon appears to be doing ok.
14 wins in two seasons
A salary of approx. $167.000 per year
$23,866. per victory :)
Eastern has only had 5 season in which they finished above .500 in the last 25 years.

The reason you think more drama follows us than any other school is because you follow us way closer than any other school. Fights happen in practice all the time. Fights happened when Ayo was here, fights happened when Dee and Deron were here. They also happen all over at other schools as well. Also parent drama wouldn't lead to chemistry issues. Chemistry was fine with Miller as he loved it here.

I think Dain will get more than 10-12 minutes a game because of foul trouble. Hawkins had 2 in the first half against Kansas. In a real game, he’s on the bench and Dain’s in to replace him.

The reason why Underwood would prefer to play Hawkins at the 5 though is that it opens up the court. It allows us to play 5 out, bringing the opposing big out to the ark. That opens up driving lanes for Shannon and Rodgers + cutting lanes for Domask.

Lol...if logging on to the world wide web and clicking a few buttons while sitting on your rumpus is a hassle....you must have an easy breezy life!
Funny. I’m actually sitting here laughing.

it’s just one more hassle.

Freshman will always want (maybe not deserve) more minutes. Especially tough getting minutes with an older squad. Can (Hansberry and DGL) they get enough minutes to see a promising future in CU?
IMO Harris will get minutes in preseason games, but his will minutes be limited overall. Probably fewer minutes than last year. 479 minutes / 14.5 minutes a game
has Dain improved offseason? If so, we will see him on the floor a good amount.

Tiers of playing time
Shannon, Hawkins, Domask,
Guerrier, Rodgers
Goode, Harmon, Dain
Harris, DGL, Hansberry
Morreti
Which leads me to this PPG prediction:

17 - Shannon
13 - Hawkins
9 - Guerrier
8 - Domask
7 - Goode
6 - Rodgers
6 - Dainja
5 - Harmon
5 - DGL/Hansberry/Harris
76 - TOTAL

And if we play some really solid (Top 25) defense, we should win 20+ games ---- good enough for a 4 seed in the tourney next March.

Seems fair. What I have seen, domask will be a double digit scorer

Re: chemistry/playing time
My take is that last year’s issues (guys more concerned with their individual shine) negatively impacted last year’s team performance. This year, there will be younger guys unhappy with their PT, and that could certainly hurt next year’s team through transfers, but I don’t see it hurting this year’s team the way last year’s issues did to that team.
