Payback? Take the high road gentlemen. we've moved on from the depths
to a position where we shouldn't concern ourselves with a scrimmage how
many years ago? That game was an important part of our climb and while
we should win easily, there should be no payback. Reserve those kinds of
feelings for a big ten, SEC or ACC opponent. Maybe a certain SEC opponent
with a coach that we have history with.

Yeah, I’m not even sure what it says about our fan base/posters here that they are even talking about payback against Eastern Illinois — and for a scrimmage. C’mon. People always talk about Illinois not getting national respect. Maybe act like we deserve it.

Jay Shidler actually won a state championship as a sophomore in 1974!
You are correct....forgot that the Blonde Bomber was actually a Freshman on that state championship team....according to IHSA stats...Jay made the all tournament team as a Freshman (scoring 49 pts) along with Rick Leighty and Bill Heidbreder....I was thinking of the 1976 team that finished 3rd

Anybody out there who can help me with this? I have a vivid memory in my addled brain of Jay Shidler, in either high school or college getting called for goal tending on a mid range jump shot that was halfway to the hoop?

Anyone?

I saw him play several times during his HS career....

Don't recall that happening....but not saying it didn't .....Jay was around 6' 1" maybe 6' 2"....he was very athletic and could jump...but not sure he had those kind of hops

How about when Skyy dunks on Edey this year.... will someone save some video of it for future debates in 20 years
I actually think Skyy is probably gonna Sky above Edey and Jenkins both at the same time and it’s gonna look something like this:

Always hate in-school little brother matchups (especially amplified after the Loyola tourney pantsing lol).

Wouldn't be surprised if this was closer than expected for some time. First regular season game jitters and all that jazz.

Thanks for the post Don....I read with interest because I grew up in southeastern Illinois and witnessed the Marty Simmons led teams as well as other great basketball teams (programs) in that area....Jay Shidler's Lawrenceville teams that never could quite win it all...the great T-Town teams with coach Crawford go against rival Effingham St. Anthony...anyone that attended a T-town vs St. Anthony game back in the day witnessed something unique...Effingham High School with Mitch Arnold and Uwve Blop (sp)....Ron Herrin's (Olney) teams in the late 70's-early 80's.....Tom Welch and the Flora Wolves in the mid 80's....are just a few of the memories I have of southeastern Illinois basketball....there are many others but your post spurred some past memories for me
Great memories. I played for Carmi in the nec conference and remember these names well. I moved to Centralia and played for the Orphans { winningest hs team in the nation}. Graduated in 1970.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — With a veteran team and star Kofi Cockburn last season, Brad Underwood had a sense of solace when he went into each day as the Illinois basketball coach.
“I woke up every night last year knowing I had 20 and 10,” Underwood said at Big Ten Media Days. “That’s a pretty good feeling.”

With Cockburn off playing professionally in Japan and veterans Trent Frazier and Da’Monte Williams out of eligibility, it’ll be a new-look Illini in 2022-23.
Five starters and 10 players from last year’s roster are gone, with a team with eight newcomers featuring a lot of new faces and pivoting to a new style of play.
Without a traditional and dominant center like Cockburn, Illinois will feature a faster-paced offense and get out more in transition. It’ll also have some more full-court pressure, though it’ll be with an emphasis on draining the shot clock and extending the half-court defense rather than forcing a bevy of turnovers.

Interesting that we're facing a Lawrenceville great! Couldn't the Illini get even one of those guys? I'll bet Lou would have given them the green light, unlike Knight and Hall!

We really aren't taking any chances with the cupcakes this year. All 6 cupcakes are ranked in the 300's on torvik. Seems like each year we have at least 1 or 2 cupcakes in the low 200's or maybe the high 100's. I wonder if this was scheduled on purpose?
