Hard to find a perfect announcer, maybe roll Cosel, Gifford, Meridith, Keith Jackson and Vitale into one announcer.
Bardo and Humel both present themselves as persons who are extremely sincere and both are likable.

For Basketball...

Jack Fleming

Firing up the ā€˜Way Backā€™ machine... Jack was a fine announcer for the Bulls years ago when the Bulls really started to build their brand. Had a great style to capture the action in an understated yet exciting way.

Chick Hearn

Got a lot of attention for his long career which included the Magical Laker Years. But he made the broadcast a bit too theatrical and too much about himself. In terms of broadcasting, not the equal of either Fleming or...

The Very Best - Jim Durham

This guy was born to broadcast basketball. The thing is though... he was better on the radio than he was on TV. Not that he was bad on TV. But his radio call was spot on and created vivid pictures. Same path as Fleming in terms of capturing the action while not turning the broadcast too much about himself.

Additional Note

Some really good roundball broadcasters always have been featured on the Illinois High School Association Tournaments both in Champaign and Peoria. One guy who was on these telecasts who also made a splash in LA was Tom Kelly.

What I find amusing is all the IU fans in the comments harping on about how they "don't care" about Illinois and don't consider us a rival. Yet they all took the time to not only seek out an Illinois bball post, but to comment on it as well. So much for not caring about us

Bordering statesā€¦āœ…
The all-time series stands at 94-91 (favoring IN)ā€¦āœ…
Lou-Do vs Bobby (aka, Classic Bully)ā€¦āœ…
Chester chesting IDKWTIā€¦āœ…

Using the term, ā€œrivalry,ā€ is not the least bit unreasonableā€¦

I genuinely thought Iowa (Bruce Pearl/Jimmy Collins conflict) and Mizzou (Braggin Rights game?) were the biggest rivalry games Illinois looks forward to. Purdue being an intrastate public university and the neutral site 50/50 splits game with Kentucky are the most hated teams from an IU perspective.

No need to apologize. Sometimes seems being off-topic is on-topic.

To that end, my best concert in Champaign was Def Leppard. Hard to top this one as it was also my first date with my wife. Honorable mention: Peter Gabriel.

Yes beating Indiana is high on my list too.
Two words: FARM AID

Yep. My sentiments exactly.

But, ultimately I donā€™t care what they tell themselves or what they think.
Letā€™s just chuckle as we beat them and have a more successful season than them once AGAIN.

Beat Iowa in football
Beat Indiana in basketball
Beat Michigan with a blunt object

Depends who you ask. Illinois is a big state and geography plays a big role in who individual fans see as our rival. IMO, IU checks more boxes than the other rivals (border state, bad blood between past players/coaches, historically competitive with one another in conference, etc.).

But to your point, I also know the rivalry isn't really reciprocated by most IU fans, which is what prevents this rivalry from being one of the marquee cbb rivalries.

Not putting you in this bucket, but many Hoosier fans see IU as being too superior to Illinois to consider us a rival and instead consider UK their rival. However, similar to the IU vs UI rivalry, Kentucky doesn't consider IU a rival (in a 2022 poll, IU wasn't even listed as one of their top 6 rivals). I was talking to a former IU cheerleader a few years ago and she made some kind of comment about how IU always beats Illinois. Until I sent her actual proof to the contrary, she was adamant that our head to head records weren't even close. So, this air of superiority from IU fans also contributes to the rivalry from our point of view.
