We're hot, and we're playing very well of late. With a week off, we should have nearly everyone healthy in another week. Time to reset our "anticipated 2020 W/L record".

* At Iowa (we played common opponent NEB stronger than did Iowa) -- WIN
* At Northwestern (we owe them big time) -- WIN
* Week 9 game against a relative peer, perhaps Mich. St. -- WIN

We finish 5-3 overall, behind NW and Wisconsin, and get invited to a lucrative Bowl Game in late December.

I see that Iowa is ranked #10 FEI. We're #85, which makes a spread of just -12 pretty good/favorable.

We played Iowa really tough at their place last year (20-10). Might of had a puncher's chance if Iowa hadn't knocked Peters head off, in an uncalled foul. I like our chances.

I never feel good about playing Iowa. Can we out physical them if we don’t get turnovers? Played well against them last year. Peters will have to be outstanding again.

I don't know if I've ever been so disappointed with the refs as that day

I would love for Peters to go off. Especially after what they did to him. That was a blatant missed call by the refs. That was the definition of targeting.

Iowa has some inexperience at QB - between either Petras or the backups. Hopefully we will mix it up on D and bring some pressure, in addition to continuing to be stout against the run. The call on the hit against Peters last year was total BS. Would love to see him haffe a better game than the UNL game....

More incentive to stomp all over the Hawkeyes, thanks to the great investigative work by Robert on the Big Ten's 2020 tiebreaker rules..................

We win the Big 10 West if we win our next two games (Iowa & Northwestern) and if three other games fall our way. Still alive with 13 days to go in the season. Nice!!

Sept. 23, 2000. Illinois vs. Meatchicken. Bill LeMonnier and crew.
OMG yes. Agonizing. B1G issued an apology, is I remember correctly. And I think that game provided a lot of impetus for the conference to move forward with its experiment with instant replay.

Oh man that's painful memories there. What an atmosphere though. They stuffed an insane amount of people into the stadium!

The advanced stats love Iowa this year, and they say this game shouldn't be close. But we played them really tough in Iowa City last year and the guys will definitely remember the hit on Peters. If they can't get locked in and keep this competitive it will be pretty disappointing.

Turnovers will determine our chances, plus Peters being effective. I like our chances /s.

That was my sophomore year and I was one of those 73k or so in the stands. If I recall correctly, had Michigan not lost the week before to UCLA, ESPN College Gameday would have been in Champaign. That was the loudest I had heard that stadium get (though from stories I have heard, the OSU game in 83 topped it). I couldn't hear the Navy guys ringing the bell when Illinois scored. I could see them ringing it, but the crowd was so loud it drowned out the bell tolls. And then... everything came crashing down (figuratively speaking). Had those calls not been blown, you could definitely make an argument that Illinois Football would be in a very different place today.

Back to the topic. I watched the Iowa/Nebraska game on Friday and Petras is just not a good quarterback. If/when he gets rattled he is going to make mistakes. I'm hoping we can rattle him! Having watched so much Illinois football over the years though... I'm not expecting a win. BUT... I wasn't expecting one at Nebraska either. Here's to hoping!

How the refs missed the fumble is beyond me. Did you know that the reason we have a replay in football and basketball because of how the refs missed blatant calls against ILL in football the Mi game and basketball with the Miami game?

And, ironically, Lemonnier was (is?) a rules analyst for ESPN.

Bill LeMonnier is an outstanding official and deserves his spot on ESPN. I have heard him discuss this infamous game situation multiple times at official's clinics and he does so with great humility, providing excellent learning opportunities for those listening in.
